I manage several professional blogs as part of my job. These blogs are authored by other technology professionals and I don't have to do much hand-holding.

Now I am setting up a Wordpress blog for a friend. He and his family will use it to share information. They also want to share photos. In the past I have always just hand-coded PHP to make a little photo gallery when needed. What I'd like some feedback on is whether or not anyone is using one of the myriad Wordpress Gallery plugins and if people can recommend one for someone who needs things kept simple.

The simplest I have ever used was the Lazy Gallery plugin, where everything in a designated folder was found and included in the gallery - but it conflicted with the InstantUpgrade plugin (you require a file in the wp-admin).

Now - I'm using in it's place the NexGen plugin .. It's nice - but periodically, I have to refresh the pictures in the dashboard/options to see if any new pictures have been added in my uploads (or any) folder. (takes 2 seconds)

You can see an example here

I do have various other scripts for galleries.. as stand alone .. and have been using MG2 because it's familiar, but you have to upload pictures to the gallery - but, after it's set up it's quite simple - just login and upload 10 at a time.

    You can see examples here:

      Thanks!

I settled on NexGen because the ability to let them upload Zip files via the dashboard will let them get a lot of the photos posted quickly.

I normally, for my own use, use the bbips bash/imagemagik shell scripts to handle my thumbnails, captions, borders, resizings, etc... but NexGen is much more user friendly. I spent this afternoon teaching my friend's whole family how to use Wordpress and NexGen (a start anyway) and by the end of the day their 11yo was greating galleries and albums and even his wife had made a dent in posting her scrapbooking and crafts photos.

      Great suggestion, thanks!

which one - NexGen? or Lazy?

NexGen just gave me grief because I hadn't created the wp-content/gallery/ directory and set its permissions. I did that and all was well.

Thanks but I think I'm happy with NextGen. The galleries at:

      Are all done with it.

Can anyone help me with gallery plugin installation on self-hosted wordpress blog?

      I can help.

Do you know how to install a plugin in general?

You can get NextGen AND installation instructions at wordpress.org/extend/plugins/nextgen-gallery/installation/

If you have any trouble with the instructions, let me know.
