Ok...I just had to!

Is it just me, or is Wordpress so very unflexible?

Help me out here.

Pros and Cons!

Personally, I like Blogger.

Can anyone change my mind?

    Ookkaayy...

    In short:

    Wordpress.org > Blogger > Wordpress.com

    In long:
    technicalbliss.blogspot.com/2006/12/wordpress-vs-blogger.html
    jayajha.wordpress.com/2005/09/27/bloggercom-vs-wordpresscom/

Blogger has a horrible comment system and is much less flexible than Wordpress.org, but Wordpress.com is pretty blegh and doesn't allow javascript widgets or more than 10mb of hosting space I believe.

    lol

I'll be watching this post, see what they say.

I never said wp was unflexible, quite the opposite in fact.
    1. Dukepro25
Nah - that was just my feeling that I got.

      I need help understanding Wordpress.

It seems very limiting to me.
  3. DrowseyMonkey
    blogger all the way.
  4. BlogBadly
Are you using self-hosted Wordpress or Wordpress.com?
    1. Dukepro25
Ummm...not sure what the difference is.
    2. AmmoBob
Wordpress.org has the software you download and install on your own server or a hosted server like hostgator. This one is very flexible and easy to use. You can add widgets, Themes and have complete control over your blog, within the limits of the hosting service you choose.

The other wordpress is like blogger and is a limited on more things.

I would recommend wrordpress on an hosted service, but if you really want more flexibility and growth potential, I would suggest drupal.org.
  5. SolReka
The trouble with blogger is that your url isn't unique.

ie my url would be solreka.blogspot.com, SEO is compromised somewhat.
    1. Dukepro25
      You can change it.
  6. BlogBadly
The difference between Wordpress.com and Wordpress.org is that you can't edit themes (im pretty sure), can't add javascript to widgets, and its overall just a lot more limited. Wordpress.com is hosted on yourblog.wordpress.com, much like Blogspot.

You can pretty much do anything in Wordpress.org because you can edit the code, download plugins, and overall it has so many more features than Blogger. Wordpress.org is hosted on your own domain.
    1. Dukepro25
So, in order to have an account on Wordpress.org, you have to have your own website?
    2. BlogBadly
Well, you don't really need an account - you just download the WP platform and install it. At least that's what I did.

And yes, you need to host it yourself.
    3. DrowseyMonkey
I had no idea there was a difference, maybe that's why I don't like wordpress.

Do you have to pay for this?
  7. SolReka
    Now I'm confused moneymoose.

I have my own domain, and I use wordpress 2.3.3. I thought wp.org and .com were the same service.

I can also add javascript to my blog such as sharethis.

    My head hurts lol
    1. BlogBadly
Hm, okay, I heard from someone that you can't have sidebar javascript widgets in Wordpress.com. Perhaps I'm incorrect.

Wordpress.org is software you upload onto your webhost. Wordpress.com is like Blogger in that you make an account and it's hosted on yourname.wordpress.com
    2. Dukepro25
If your content is hosted on their server, is it still their content? On one of the WP Vs Blogger blogs it was saying that because my content is on Blogger, Google owns it - do I have to download the WPorg to be able to host my own content and have control over it?

Edit - My question was, do you have to download the platform on your server to be able to own your content?
    3. BlogBadly
Yup, Wordpress has no claims to your content. They just provide a publishing platform.
    4. ChampDog
I think you still own the content for both WP and Blogger.
  8. SolReka
That's exactly what I did blogbadly.
I downloaded wordpress to my webhost server.
Regarding javascript in sidebar. I have myblogcatalog amongst other javascripts in my sidebar.

I found the reason I installed wordpress is because I can have a specific url as I am hosting so I can call my blog anything.
    1. BlogBadly
Then you're using wordpress.org which pretty much lets you do anything.
  9. Dukepro25
    Yesh!

This is all way over my head!

I need that Wordpress for Dummies book. Lol
  10. SolReka
Spot one blogbadly regarding ownership of content. It's all mine what I write.

Imagine building a great blog only to find some conglomeration like Google owns everything you have ever written. Madness
    1. Dukepro25
      Yikes! That's not cool!
    2. Tigress
What!!!? Did I not read that in the fine print?
    3. Tigress
Okay, I just checked. Google does not claim ownership of anything you put in your blog.

"Your Intellectual Property Rights. Google claims no ownership or control over any Content submitted, posted or displayed by you on or through Google services. You or a third party licensor, as appropriate, retain all patent, trademark and copyright to any Content you submit, post or display on or through Google services and you are responsible for protecting those rights, as appropriate"
    4. BlogBadly
      But:
      www.google.com/google-d-s/intl/en/terms.html

"You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Service. By submitting, posting or displaying the Content you give Google a worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content which you submit, post or display on or through the Service for the sole purpose of enabling Google to provide you with the Service in accordance with its Privacy Policy."

They can change your content and modify it.
    5. Dukepro25
      Thank you Tigress!

I would think that that would be within reason BB.

I'm sure they wouldn't take your art work or such and change it to suit their needs. At the very least, they could display your site, I'm sure they would not be able to make money off of it.

And if for some reason they needed to alter content, it would be to block or negate certain inappropriate content.
    6. BlogBadly
      I agree, Duke.
  11. SolReka
    Duke

Just download wordpress and have a play. I could confuse matters and suggest you also install xammp apache server. This way you can develop your blog via your pc and upload your blog when you've finished developing it.

Just have a play with WP see what you think. Remember you own the content then. Heck Bebo has just been sold for $400 million, so who's to say your blog can't be up for sale for trillion dollars. Money you wouldnt get if google had their mits on your blog :-)
    1. Dukepro25
      My head hurts! lol
  12. tfgblog
    wordpress all the way
  13. cooper
WP either form all the way for me. No, you can't use javascript at all wordpress.com strips it, the MBL widget they make for wordpress.com is non javascript.
It's really pretty easy once you look at it though you might want to wait until 2.5 comes out so you won't have to deal with it and you can choose a theme which works with it right off.
  14. Dukepro25
I'm going to have to find some tutorials.

But...at this point, I'm not very convinced that WP is any better.

Blogger seems to have all my needs met and I'm very happy with them - for now. lol

I'm not in the least disappointed, accept for the occasional down time, but that is not too often.
  15. nplbjirel
I like Blogger except it's comment form. This is not as flexible as that of Wordpress.
    1. Dukepro25
      Agreed!
  16. SolReka
    Hi Duke

Well looks like this discussions has simply confused you even more lol

They say a little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing :-)

If you're happy with blogspot / blogger then why bother trying to reinvent the wheel. Wordpress is great as it offers full flexibility, but if blogger can almost do the same, then stick with that platform. If anything the link blogbadly mentioned about google and content owenership would make me switch to WP in an instant - just on the principle some big boy thinks he change my content without notice. Tish and tosh to that, the cheeky monkies.
    1. Dukepro25
      LOL

      Great - thanks!

Yah, I'm pretty content with what I have so far, but that doesn't rule out using WP in the future for other blogs. I would hate to have to reinvent my whole blog. It's coming along so nicely.

      Peace!

Wordpress as a content management system is far superior to Blogspot.com, but it only works if you have your own domain and host. If you are going to rely on Wordpress.Com, which is basically like Blogspot.com, then the functionalities are inferior to Blogspot unless you are willing to pay to change your theme and change your sidebar.

So for now, Blogspot is better for you, until you're will to pay for a domain and hosting.
    1. Dukepro25
      Understandable.

      Thanks!
  18. fatalhilarity
Something that I think is important to understand is that most hosts have one-click installation of WordPress, it is extremely simple to set-up and even installing additional plugins should be within the reach of any computer literate blogger.

If you want to have a solid foundation to build upon; I recommend Wordpress - just make sure you find a good host (not godaddy) that offers this one-click installation. Also if you have the choice choose Linux over a Windows server - more developers write for Linux - it's just easier for yourself.

    I don't think I like www.wordpress.com
  20. veeshken
    I prefer blogger .
  21. tamalds
Blogger is mainly for promoting their product, "Adsense" so they said nothing about bandwidth, you can use a lot of blogger's bandwidth and it can easily handle some great traffic. It is much worthy as a free hosting.

wordpress is professional and you get your own domain, which is far more better. No one can shut it down because you are paying for it. But google can shut your blogger blog any time without giving notice!

Blogger is no doubt the best blog platform.I know more than 200 blog platforms , and i tested most of them , because i am professional blogger , you know.
    1. ivytan
Sorry, I'd have to disagree. I've been blogging and designing blog templates for almost 10 years. I've tried blogger, movabletype, greymatter, b2, b2evolution, livejournal and even the poorly-scripted cutenews. Nothing comes close to Wordpress (well except b2 but Wordpress is based on b2).

Wordpress gives you insurmountable power to do what you want with theming (for those who can't design) and plugins (for those who can't code). Every installation is unique because you can drastically change it from what you are originally given. It's so good that it could replace a content management system. And with the advent of mu.wordpress.org and its successor buddypress.com, Wordpress will become the ultimate social networking multiblog. Many university sites, as well as reputable magazines are already using Wordpress MU to feed you the latest updates and news. Not to mention the fact that Wordpress can also merge with its forum system called bbpress.org, so that you can have a Blog-Community of sorts. It's built to be the pinnacle of Web 2.0 ideology.

Wordpress is the love child of 100s of developers. (sounds so wrong) and have evolved and re-evolved to stay at the top of people's most favorite blogging system. It's a far cry from Blogger, which has barely evolved since its creation.
    2. Dukepro25
Blogger seems to fit my needs very nicely though.
  24. daniel23
    blogger is way better.
  25. Funked
    Wordpress so very unflexible?

Are you kidding? You can do almost anything with wordpress.
  26. Dukepro25
You guys aren't doing a very good job in convincing me to switch over.

From what I've heard, WP is for programs and designers, and Blogger is a more simple, flexible, free service with little or no limitations in being able to operate it (as far as bandwidth and content are concerned).

    . . . . .

    Am I wrong?

Why has blogger been so nice for me?

    Probably because I can't code.

I guess WP and Blogger are good for different types of people.

I guess that's why race car drivers like race cars for the speed and old grannies like Cadilacs for the comfort. lol
    1. daniel23
Exactly. Blogger is great for simple soul (such as myself) who just want to get down and blog.
    2. ivytan
Hey Dukepro, my second post was not meant to persuade you. I already told you that Blogger is better for you earlier on since you will not be using Wordpress.Org.

My second post is meant to debunk the myth that cooltool presented because it is not based upon facts.
  27. shoepaparazzi
Wordpress on your own host hands down, so many plugins and SEO friendly.

    Hi Duke

Are you still not convinced about worpress lol

    Dag nam it.

Give me your paypal address and I'll send you $1 if you install WP. You won't regret it, and I promise I'll cough up.

Don't worry about the code with wp, you simply import code, widgets, plugins etc. It is a great platform, and the blog is all yours. No google dictatorial regime with WP.

    Get WP young skywalker :-)

    Take care

I just switched to Wordpress from Blogger last week and could not be happier. Blogger has a LOT of restrictions while Wordpress is limitless... I think you just need to know where to look for things.

On top of that, my blog stats have improved since I made the switch! www.datmoney.com/2008/03/is-it-a-coincidence-my-stats-gotten-better-since-s...
