Today I published my celeb of the month feature and chose Salma Hayek for her selfless nursing of a sick, malnourished Sierra Leon infant. In looking through the comments on the video, I noted that a lot of people had a negative reaction, even though I thought it was beautiful and have myself donated milk (but never nursed another's child). What do you think of her actions?
Was it beautiful and selfless?
Was it a nasty publicity stunt?
Would you do it?

if only my milk can save the life of a kid then I'll surely do. But as long as there's something (bottle feeding) and someone (breastfeed) that can provide for that milk then never.

      makes sense.

ditto. In such a desperate situation I would or donate milk, but in general I would say no. I don't see it as a publicity stunt by Hayek at all, she reacted to a situation as a compassionate human being.

    Would if I could,honest.

      good for you.

I agree to idealpinkrose. It is not just food to feed, but something more than that

There is so much more that breastfeeding gives a child than nourishment. The closeness between a caring adult and an infant also boosts their viability and health.

Of course, in the same situation I would nurse that child.

As a rule, I try not to question another person's act of kindness, so I'm not going to judge her motives.

Reminds me of the end of the grapes of wrath.

Sure, I would do that if a woman needed help.

I am glad to see that there are others out there who would do the same. For some reason, breastfeeding is looked down on a lot and it genuinely makes my day to see that human compassion still exists and that this natural act is looked at for what it is, natural.

I agree. It's good to see the spirit of human compassion and kindess once in a while. Sometimes we can get so caught up in the 'bad news' of the day that we forget there are a lot of great people out there!

If I could, and the situation warranted, it then yes, I would.

But no, I wouldn't do it for a run of the mill reason, or just because.

My answer is "yes" and I'm not judging her for this. All things considered in the same situation I'd do it. One of my brothers was breastfed by my mom's friend when she was sick and we were all grateful for her generosity.

I would do it in the same situation as her, I think it was very commendable of her... but as other people have said I wouldn't do it for any 'run of the mill' reason... just seems wrong!

    noble things to do...

I am not a mother but I respect those that would do this, anything to save a life.

I would if I was lactating. I don't think an actress just does something like that for publicity.
  14. BLACKLASHEZ
Well it was a nice thing to do. I admit I was a bit stunned when I heard however It's a good deed.

    All i can say is

    Lucky damn kid.

It would be a big opportunity and happiness to breast feed another woman's child, I wish I could do that.(If there is one thing I envy women, it is breast feeding only)
  17. dinsquared
If there was need, and I had the ability, absolutely.

Wet nurses used to do it all the time.

If a child had no food or water, wouldn't you give them some? The fact that it comes from the breast doesn't make it wrong. She was helping a child who needed nutrition, and she had the opportunity to give that child something that others could not. How could anyone not want to nurture a sick child with the best care possible?

For men to have breat milk would suffer a condition called gyenacomastia or galactorrhoea...

It's difficult nowadays to spot the difference between a public stunt and a selfless act specially from a celebrity like Hayek. The question is could a Hollywood celeb do it "off cam" or without the benefit of a presscon, like what Mother Theresa of Calcutta did during her prime/time?
  21. Anniepooh
I would. It provides so much for a baby beyond just food - the benefits are many and wonderful.
