A Melbourne woman has left her job to care for her dog full-time.

Barbara Bourke has a 15 year-old blue heeler called Maddy. Her vet told her five months ago that a fused spine and prolapsed disks would stop Maddy walking again.

Barb has so far spent $24,500 on vet bills, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, a masseuse and a specially designed dog pram. She has also taken a lengthy stint away from work, unpaid, to care for her dog.

What would you do?

I would take care of the dog but would not quit my job. I would take out dog insurance that they have now if at all possible.

I'm sorry, but the way that dog is suffering, I would have put him down. He's 15, quite elderly and euthanasia is merciful. I will be facing the decision to euthanize my pet in the coming year. I dread it, but when the time comes, I know I do not want my much beloved cat to suffer.

I think it is a personal choice and one based on the merits of the situation. I don't know what the quality of life is for the dog, but if it's pain is being managed then we can't really sit in judgment and determine if it is suffering at such a level it is time to put him down.
