Assuming that life in the spirit world / heaven / soul form is nice and peaceful, if given a choice, would you rather stay there than take birth and come to earth to face the everyday hassles of living?

I personally can't make a choice since its a tough one, so I thought I'll see what others think about this. I am sure we better have very good reasons to be here than there.

"I am sure we better have very good reasons to be here than there."
Yes. "Here" is real. "There" is just a figment of imagination.
    1. minalthukral
Well I already said "assuming" because I know that goes against the views of many people that there is a "there", though I absolutely believe in life & afterlife and the existence of an eternal soul within us.
    2. SweetViolet
Just so you understand that belief and reality are not necessarily the same thing...believing does not make it so.
    3. minalthukral
well said though I am sure you will agree there are many things in our lives like the existence of god and ghosts, which are based on beliefs, which are a reality for many of us.
    4. jeremyjanson
@SweetViolet: And unbelieveing does not make it not so...

@OP & dsriharsha: Option C. The fact that you would lose all your memories et cetera means that you aren't really the same person if you come back to this world. I don't believe in a spirit world though, I believe in a Kingdom of Heaven with ressurection in to a new body and your consciousness (including memories) intact and enhanced, and it will be a place filled with both much love, much enlightenment, and also much good work and service. It will be peaceful in the sense of inner peace, and you certainly will not be overworked (there's no need for overwork), but it won't be eternal rest as you might find you get rather bored and displeased of that when the death hormones go away and your youth is restored... for good.

"which are a reality for many of us."

      "a reality"

Whenever someone uses the phrase "a reality," they are referring to fiction, because there is only REALITY. Singular. Not plural. To preface it with "a" means you are referring to "alternate realities."

A thing is either real or imaginary. True or false. To say that it's alternatively true is bullshit.

Even in the Many Worlds Interpretation of Quantum Physics, there is still only one objective reality with many millions of subjective realities, each one housing a separate version of the universe.

Thank you, your semantic faux pas broke my writer's block. Hopefully for good.

Note that the article is not an attack on you, but on all spiritual apologists who promote the idea of multiple realities. I just used your post (which I trimmed slightly) as a reference.
    7. minalthukral
@voodooKobra Thankyou...you said everything yourself. I didn't even have to make an effort to justify the existence of parallel universe and realities...you did it all for me and did it well
    8. voodooKobra
That does not, however, justify the existence of the phrase "a reality." I did all the work for you? No, I laid out the argument every one of your ilk would be itching to throw at me at that point just so I could throw it back in their faces with my catapult of logic.

It's like chess. I saw the move that you, and others like you, would inevitably make and prepared to demolish your defenses as soon as you made that move.

Multiple realities also does not translate to "spirits," "souls," or any other such fairy tale nonsense.
    9. minalthukral
@voodooKobra well what may seem to be fairytale nonsense to you is "our reality" and that is what I meant by "a reality" because I know there exist people like you for which it isn't

besides, you know what, the point wasn't to discuss if you believed it or not...the point of the thread was just a hypothetical question saying if you are given the option to live on earth or heaven, which one would you prefer, keeping in mind the pros and cons of both but I guess now its just becoming a pointless argument

you are entitled to have your own beliefs and I am to mine and all the other participants also have their own minds to decide what they wish to believe and there really isn't any compulsion here since I am not really on a spree to prove anything to anyone...god bless
    10. voodooKobra
To answer your discussion question, I would prefer earth. There is no future in heaven. It has always been described to me as a timeless paradise of pure unadulterated joy. To hell with that!

By staying on earth, I can continue to better myself, my fellow man, and the world we inhabit. Then pass the torch onto the next generation, who would eventually branch out. In heaven, I would never have an incentive to better the universe. I hate complacency.

      [god bless]

That's unnecessary and I tend to receive it as condescending.
    11. minalthukral
@voodooKobra: i am glad you said that because that is all the intention was...to realise that we are here not because its a fact that we have accepted but because its what we have chosen and for a good enough reason...to grow and evolve
    12. voodooKobra
I take issue with some of the implications of your post, but let's get to the meat of the issue: I'm not here because I chose to be here (but if I were, I would choose to remain here so long as there's still work to be done). I exist as a result of my parents' sexual habits.
    13. minalthukral
I am sorry for the "god bless" but its just the way I write...nothing personal or condescending
    14. voodooKobra
It's fine. I just deal with a lot of evangelizing Christians who preface their "GOD BLESS" with several HTML tags and follow it with several exclamation points and it gets tiring after a while. Passive aggressive condescension and whatnot.
    15. minalthukral
@voodooKobra: well, this one will trigger another long new argument. i believe that your soul chose this body and a life, it chose to come back to earth...to learn and evolve
  2. dsriharsha
A lie is a lie even if everyone believes it. The truth is the truth even if nobody believes it.

Supposing there is a place that is vaguely nice and peaceful, I wouldn't mind visiting once in a while.. not live permanently
    1. SweetViolet
A lie is a lie even if everyone believes it. The truth is the truth even if nobody believes it.

      Exactly!

I'd rather deal with an ugly reality than a beautiful lie.
    2. jeremyjanson
@SV: You do realize that you're hijacking a good hypothetical thread right now right?
    3. minalthukral
hey guys, I am sorry I underestimated the controversy that could arise from this one

my idea of posting this thread was that i have recently read a book where this guy can live on the other side without leaving his body. i do believe in the existence of the other side because I am studing past life regression and I do think with an open mind if one experiments with it, my belief can become your reality too...but that isn't the point

the whole idea was that are we all living here with good enough reasons to be here...do we know the purpose of our life and what are we striving to achieve or its just that we are living on because its a reality we have come to accept

@jeremyjanson - from spirit world, i meant exactly what you said...a place of peace and tranquillity...where everything is eternally beautiful

the catch here guys is to question what is it that this reality or life gives us that this imaginary world of inner peace and tranquillity might fail to give
    4. jeremyjanson
@minalthukral: What life and reality gives you is a challenge and work, and God will continue to give you that in heaven, in service to him. There will be differences of course, but all human needs, including the needs of our deeper character, will be provided for.
    5. minalthukral
@jeremyjanson: I couldn't agree less with what you have said though there was this very interesting reason for why the character in this book decides to stick to the real world than the spirit world when given a choice and ever since I have read it, I have been thinking well, maybe that could be true

It says the spirit world will give you inner peace and satisfaction but there are a few things we need to come to earth or or rather may want to come back for - children and relationships. When we are on earth, without knowing the true identity of a soul, we start afresh and make great relationships with others here, which last...that is how we can experience the love of being a parent, a lover, a part of someone else's being

One may argue when you have inner peace there should be no requirement of these but i am sure the relationships we make and the love attached to it when flows with our soul, it must do more good to it in any form and maybe thats why its worth it
    6. dsriharsha
a small note about discussing the "hypothetical" stuff..

For those of us who do not want to make the "assumption" in a baseless imaginative concept that the OP wants us to make, it is because often, the OP is not honest in their intentions and just make a bait to make those of differing opinion conform to their view(though hypothetically) and slowly, the discussion becomes less hypothetical as those who share the OP's beliefs start asserting their "reality"..

So, lets just be clear with the truth and the false from the start..
    7. minalthukral
@dsriharsha: I must say you are quite cynical but I do appreciate your point of view. Everyone has a right to believe what they wish to and for you if the existence of a spiritual world is so difficult to imagine, the rest of the question will probably not make too much sense
    8. SweetViolet
A desire for truth = cynicism. Who knew?
    9. voodooKobra
This isn't about beliefs, Dsriharsha and I are only concerned about what is true and what is false.
    10. dsriharsha
      I prefer being called skeptical
    11. jeremyjanson
@VK: LOL! Be sure to read below too.

@minalthukral: The whole point of Christ's "my Father's kingdom" is that heaven is NOT a solitary experience and will actually have, under God's law with it's emphasis on everything romantic and beautiful about life, much more full and fruitful relationships then the ones you know on Earth. Inner Peace does not mean hiding away in a corner all day, it means going out and being a mother not to your own children, but to everyone under the sun, and getting to know each and every one of them for the exact individual that they are and they are becoming.

But even greater then this, you will get to know the love, kindness, passion, romanticism, and affection of your beautiful heavenly father and host, the most gorgeous being, as VK being a physicist can probably attest too, who has ever lived, lives now or will ever live.
    12. minalthukral
@jeremyjanson couldn't agree more. thanks for presenting your thoughts in a beautiful manner...finally its all about experience to move to the next level of consciousness

No man has concieved and no mind has imagined what is in store for those when we get there. Being spiritual is better than being physical in every way possible. You get all the benefits of being physical except that you are immune to anything physical that can hurt you. Also it would mean you will never ever age and be eternally young as well.
    1. voodooKobra
If there were such a thing as spirits, you would be correct.
    2. jeremyjanson
What's more, living in the spirit actually causes you to lead a better, more heroic, more fruitful and joyous and less emotionally burdened life. The Kingdom of Heaven is inside of you, growing always, building you stronger and more loving and joyous every day. The commandments are not a burden; indeed, they are a piece of love, shed for you, to keep by your own heart and guide your life of honor, fulfillment, and love to ever greater heights.

I see the Q needing reform to be answered fully. If I choose to live in that peaceful place like a heaven, I would but unless I experienced everyday life would I be able to find peace or appreciate that place?
I see people reading this as a 'spiritual' Q but I look as it can be from another point of view. Can we have one without the other? Also, is the spiritual and physical world intertwined?
    1. jeremyjanson
"Also, is the spiritual and physical world intertwined?"

The ressurection of the body would seem to imply so.
  5. prophet666
this is known to none the unknown will always remain the unknown when you know it it becomes the known
  6. nothingprofound
Since I think everyday life is heaven, I'd prefer to stay here.
    1. jeremyjanson
Heaven & Earth are made by the same being. Similar artists, only Heaven is his masterpiece.

For me, there is no spirit world, no ghosts, aliens, paranormal or anything other than the present physical existence. If there was, such things would be beyond us and incapable of our senses picking them up. Sad, but true...
    1. voodooKobra
Well, there are things beyond our perception, but our technology does a wonderful job of detecting them. I'm referring to X-Ray galaxies, of course. Nothing supernatural, though.
  8. maftab92
i have studied paranormal psychology in depth and i am a firm believer of the existance of soul, sixth sense and life after life.
    1. minalthukral
I agree. The existence of a soul is now proven by various methodologies like past life regression and I also believe in its existence. To understand it though I do think its easier to start with an open mind since like the word 'love', the word 'soul' also has been used a lot out of context. People like Dr. Brian Weiss and Michael Newton have been researching the subject since over 30 years and their work with regards to soul and the existence of a spirit world is phenomenal
