Recently, in Irvine, California, a little girl found $10,000 in her bunny snacks and she and her family returned it to be rewarded by the store that held the product through a donation to their favorite charity. proofpositivity.wordpress.com/2008/12/31/proof-positivity-enough-said/
Would you have returned the money?

yes, I'm a sucker like that. I found an unmarked white envelope stuffed full of cash, and turned it in. They gave me a little reward from it.

Yes. That's one heck of a lot of money, enough so that I know that the person to whom it belongs is suffering in some way from its loss. Even if it's a big corporation, the person who was responsible for the money has their job hanging on the line. They might lose it anyway, but at least they can put the company on their resume if the money came back.

That could have been someones life savings, someones surgery money, someone's college money.
Yes, I would returned, obviously. -
$10000 is alot of money! I would definitely return such a large sum that isn't mine, that kind of money could be someone's lifeblood. I'm not saying that I wouldn't secretly hope for some kind of generous reward for returning it, but I would still return it regardless of the reward.
Now if we were talking if I found $5 that wouldn't break anyone's bank and I fair and square found it... I may put a little more thought into just keeping it. -
I REALLY want to say that I would. But, honestly, I have student loan payments and need a new car...so I probably would keep it and donate to my charities on my own.

I did return a large batch of money I found on a sidewalk in Norwalk, CA in the 1990's. I turned it into the Sheriff's office. They pocketed it. No report. I was absolutely disgusted at the lack of ethics on the part of the LA County Sheriff.
The next time I found a wallet, I took it to the owner directly. -

I would... but here's something to think about:
How in the world would you forget that you stuffed $10,000 in a cracker box and then mistakenly return the same (cash stuffed) cracker box to the store? And why in the world would a store restock a cracker box that had been opened in the first place?-
I can see that. I am a single mom with a full time job AND I attend college full time. But I do not think I would forget about $10,000 and where I put it. Simply because that money would be helping to pay bills and school loans and buy clothes for the kiddo, fix the car... the list is endless really. *shrug* simply me, I suppose. But it would be hard to forget where I stashed an amount of money that large.

I found a wallet in a store that was stuffed full of cash. I honestly didn't trust this particular store to give the wallet back (with the cash in tact) to the owner. The wallet did have good ID so I gave it to the owner directly. The owner gave me a 500.00 reward! I was blown away.
If I had still been a junkie, I know I would have never returned it--but thankfully, I am on a much more spiritual and balanced path today! -
I would have to say that yes, 100% I would return it.
I even let cashiers know when they've given me too much change back! And I've heard all the comments before about "just keep your mouth shut" or "it's their error" etc.... but I am an honest person, and I used to be a cashier, and know that sometimes (depending on the store) if your drawer is short, it comes out of your pay.
I also firmly believe in "what goes around, comes around" and I was brought up honest, and raised my daughter the same way. I wouldn't want it to happen to me, so therefore, I would help out if I could.

I wouldn't just turn it in. I would make sure I had a record of the return for the purposes of unclaimed cash for the police. They cannot hold something if there is registered receipt from a lawyer. It is the same problem if you find an unidentified pistol. Very large amounts of cash are problematic.

That is a lot of money... which would be so easy to use on bills, groceries etc etc.
I would attempt to find the owner but it would be a struggle inside myself, and later I would probably beat myself up every time I had a need... yet it would feel good to do the right thing too..
Ugh! I hate these kind of dilemmas

If I found cash in an envelope somewhere .. I would definitely keep the cash.
However, if I were walking around and saw an envelope fall out of a stranger's jacket - I would try my best to return the money. I wouldn't be all hush hush hoping he doesn't notice that he dropped the envelope and I would keep the cash.. and in fact, do quite the opposite. -

I noticed something: Some people responded with something akin to, "I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I didn't return it," but nobody responded with a religious reasoning (e.g. "God would punish me if I didn't!").
I don't want to start a religious discussion here by ANY means. I just thought it was interesting that people considered their own feelings more relevant than the ambiguous threats from an ancient book abridged by the Catholic Church in the Council of Trent.
