Hubby started schooling for a new job this afternoon. They told them it was a smoke free plant. They can not have any type of tobacco at all in the plant. The job starts at $14 an hour and goes to $18 after three years. Would you walk out in the middle of training because they say you cant smoke. People have walked out due to this. Hubby was florred by it. Would you stay or go?

Everyone deserves a break...even if that includes smoking

They told them not on the property at all. I do not know if hubby can make it 8 hours with out a smoke or dip. But for $14 hours he better try lol

He should try, anyway. He'll probably learn to enjoy breathing air instead of smoke.

I'd stay. Jobs are hard to come by. Smokers can go without for the working day (8 hours). If they are heavy smokers they could wear a patch to eliminate smoking during work hours or to quit altogether.

The new camel snus - you're supposed swallow the spit, they are making it for people in your hubs situation - no one knows you got it in. Me 2 full days without a smoke shaking badly but alive

I am a smoker and it's perfectly fine for me if I don't smoke for 8 hours.

I can see a win-win situation here: he gets a job at a decent rate of pay, discovers he CAN go without a smoke for that long and quits, thereby adding to your disposable cash by not setting a chunk of money on fire every month. It also saves you money on medical bills (smokers are more prone to respiratory illnesses) and extends his lifespan by reducing his chances of tobacco-related cancers.

I vote he sticks it out and learns that he can not only go 8 hours without a tobacco fix, he can go the rest of his life without it!

As a smoker, individuals like myself often find that there is no other perfect companion/accessory than a cigar/cigarette in those lonely silent moments on a smoke break.

Even more so on a rainy lonely day.

I smoked for 18 years, so I know all of the "reasons" and arguments from the smoker's point of view. I quit more than 20 years ago, so I have a very clear view of the other side, as well.

Ask yourself this...if you felt that there was no other perfect companion/accessory than a couple of shots of whiskey in those lonely silent moments of a break, would you expect your employer to tacitly approve the entire staff drinking on the job?

That's what it comes down to...smoking is a personal vice. You have a choice to engage in it or not, just like drinking or snorting cocaine or watching porn. But your employer is under no obligation to provide you with the means to engage in your vice on company premises and it is unreasonable to expect him to do so.

I think the employer has struck a proper balance: the company is not refusing to hire people who smoke, it is simply making its property a smoke-free environment. I'll bet it is also a liquor-free, drug-free and porn-free environment, too.
