Anyone tried their hand writing lyrics?

How do / did you approach it?

What did you write about?

What is the subject matter and story line. Then after mulling it over and breathing life into the feelings I write, compose, usually freehand the whole enchiladas the first time. Been writing lyrics for years.

Love, found, lost, stories, and some ditties. Some for dance songs.

Write about life and stuff. I just write when I have something to write about. I don't try and force something out.

The tune's everything. You can write any junk and make it to fit. Check out the various versions of Where'd you do song on youtube

    I write songs and poetry.

How I approach it? I just start writing poetry with the 1st line that comes to mind and I go from there.

If I have a subject I want to write about with either song or poetry, I free write for 5 minutes or so. Non-stop writing. Don't think, don't erase! Just go and you'll be surprised at the ideas you'll get from yourself and how more open your mind will be when writing.

I disagree with crazyTsu but I am a lyrics guy... I listen to the lyrics of every song I listen to, and often read them to get the full meaning. I write lyrics, I tend to write hooks better than I write the rest of the song but often I have a catchy thought in my head and I just write it down... and then I think for a few days about it and the rest of the lyrics come to me a little at a time... I takes a while though to get a whole song down.. I may have 30 songs partially done and I may not finish a song until a year after I started writing it.. but that's just me.

I avoid cliche's and try to say something in a new way... once the words are done, then I put it to music... and I make sure that the music fits the emotion of how I felt when I wrote the lyrics. The goal is for the music to "carry" the lyrics emotionally. If you have a good lyrical hook and a good musical hook in the same song you are normally looking at a hit.

@Jason: I dont contend to be a professor of music. You are obviously right and I agree with you. Spending time on any work makes it better

If you have something in your mind to write and if it sounds ok, it starts to evaluate itself whenever you try to play it on your guitar, piano, ... etc. So i keep playing and playing. I can never completed any of my compositions.
