Belleville, Illinios just made it illegal for 9th graders and up to trick or treat, and I agree. High school kids should be escorting their younger brothers and sisters around on halloween, or going to a school dance.

In my mind, trick or treating should be for the little kids. What do you think?

I didn't trick or treat when I was a little kid, let alone when I was in high school...lol

I do agree that the older kids should not be asking for candy...If they're going to be walking around in their costumes, they definitely need to have a younger sibling with them...

up to 8th grade is ok. My cousin went when he was in 9th grade and a woman remarked "you have a lower voice than my husband!"

I hope your cousin was a boy.

    We went in 9th grade.

Then we got mugged for our candy by kids older than us, and didn't want to go out anymore after that anyway.

I agree that older kids shouldn't be out trick or treating unless theyre there for a younger sibling. But I found this part of the provision weird and a bit unreasonable:

"One provision in the ordinance restricts the wearing of masks and disguises in public areas by those 12 and older except on Halloween. Clay said it's important that the identities of adults not be hidden."

    Huh?

      that deals with sex offenders.

How about the rest of us who might wear costumes for a theme party or any other holiday?

And it applies to people 12 and older... Are teenagers qualified as adults in that area?

well, assuming that you are an adult...trick or treating is for the kids...wear your costume theme in full later on at the party.

I begged my gram "Please I don't want to go! I'm too old grammy." "Shirley you're still a kid." I was forced to go as a hobo. I ripped my jeans and a t-shirt took them outside and muddied them up and wore a plaid shirt over it all. I was completely miserable the whole time.

Me and my wife help put on a large Halloween festival every year so that the kids in the town where we live will have someplace safe to go.

The last time I went I was 21. Being 4'11", I have the height for it, so I wore a mask that concealed my face. I took my 2 (much younger) nephews out & we all had a great time. It's one of my favorite memories, actually. Theirs too, as far as I can tell.

The oppressive horror! Thought we lived in a free country. People should be allowed to beg for candy at any age. Of all the things to make laws about...

In my town most of the older kids go out with groups of younger ones. They usually dress up so I don't mind handing them a bit of candy too. I am rather selective what anyone is given though young kids might get a couple choice pieces dropped in their bags while older ones get less candy and less than choice pieces of it.

Though I hate thinking about it as being under threat if I don't give out something, I recognize that the self-righteous asshole on the block is the one whose house TP'd/egged or his car vandalized. Right now I enjoy the status of being that cool guy on the block who is damned useful with an air compressor, a truck and trailer for hauling crap, and helps local kids build kick ass speaker systems and audio equipment. I have no desire to lose that status so I hand out a nickel's worth of homage to each of a hundred local kids one night a year.

i agree with ThreeWest only its a little awkward to see older ones digging the trick or treat thingy. i prefer to see younger ones coz they're mostly fun and cute

I don't see anything bad with older kids trick or treating I mean there is a kid in all of us... it's only once in a year anyway so why be choosy... and yeah they dressed up for this one night and we refuse them to be happy for a night...

have a big kid treat bag and another for the little ones so the treats are different but really Kids of all ages enjoy the same sweets unless you are diabetic

I don't know, I might have to disagree here. I do think it's a little old and I didn't at that age, but still Halloween is a fun holiday, does it need that much legality involved with it?

Also, I skipped a few years, so in 9th grade on Halloween, I was 12. But I know some kids in 8th grade now who are 14. So by following that law, kids older than me could have trick or treated, but I couldn't at 12.

And how is that enforced? I know some really tiny 9th graders that could pass for 11. The could surely sneak by. And at the same time, I know some really tall 7th and 8th graders who would be allowed to, but might be refused candy by those who think they are older.
