This time though you get to decide on the Cause we all get to blog about!
The challenge once again is to come together and use our blogs for something really important & make an extraordinary positive contribution to our world.
Here are the guidelines:
1. For the next week use this thread to post and discuss your ideas
2. Vote Here on August 10th to August 12th for the idea you support
3. The Winning Great Cause will be determined by most votes on August 13th.
4. Before September 27th Spread the word about the Blogging for Good challenge
5. Blog about the Cause on Monday September 27th
The last 2 blogging challenges proved that we can make an extraordinary difference in raising awareness and even money for a good cause.
Lets raise the bar by involving even more bloggers in the next challenge.
So, what great cause would you like the blogcatalog community to raise awareness about?

The Tree House emergency youth shelter in Taos NM.
It is due to open this fall/winter, and will serve
youth in crisis ages 13 - 17. These are kids who
may be running from home because they are being
beaten, or sexually abused, or because their parents
are addicts and the sick dynamics of their homes are
making them crazy. The Tree House will give them, at
last, a safe place to go stay, a place to get help.
I work for the parent organization, The DreamTree
project, which offers transitional housing for an
older age range and for a longer time period.
I've already begun a fund raiser on my blog, as
the second annual 'walkathon' is coming up next
month to raise funds to open the Tree House. I
think most of my co-workers think I'm pretty nuts
to be so bonkers over blogging. So, I'm hoping
to show that blogging can also serve a useful
purpose beyond satisfying my expressive needs!
I'm hoping to hand over a fat check of money
raised through blogging.
Below is the url to the post I'll have glued to
the top of my blog, about all this. I would be
absolutely THRILLED to get others in the Blog
Catalog community promoting the Tree House!!
I'd also be happy to answer any and all questions
about DreamTree and the Tree House.
Or, perhaps people would be more into raising
awareness about the HUGE NEED for supportive
services of this kind for children in general,
without tying it to a specific program like
the Tree House emergency shelter. It is sad,
but true... there are a LOT of kids in unsafe
environments, with no place to go for help.
And government funding for non-profit youth
shelters is only getting tighter. We were just
discussing this past week in staff meeting that
a number of shelters in New Mexico have recently
been forced to close their doors and stop serving
youth in need.
The older kids that DreamTree's transitional living
center serve are an even harder population to find
supportive services for, with many of them having
aged out of foster care, and with criminal or
psychiatric histories that makes placements harder.
And yet, these kids DESERVE A CHANCE to turn their
lives around.
Well- I could go on and on about this issue, as it
is one that has really touched me personally. But
I'll end it here, and give you the url to my post
about the Tree House:

I also think Animal Related Causes (especially for dogs
could be valuable for us to all blog about.
PETA has ideas at www.peta.org/actioncenter/monthly-activism-idea.asp -
But at this point maybe Michael Vick was on the right side of the whole dog thing after what happened at Ving Rhames house?

According to the calendar below, October is Adopt-a-Shelter Dog Month. This would make a good campaign topic. For other topic ideas. (see calendar)

Stop All Abuse
Make Sept 27th Bloggers Against Abuse Day.
We could design some nice graphics for our blogs b4 then announcing the date and cause with the goal of spreading the word to more than the universe of BlogCatalog Bloggers.
Thoughts?-
the stop all abuse day sounds great! anyone can choose to blog about one particular abuse that they wish to stop. there can be different topics and it will be more interesting to know what your blogger friend has written about.
in case of a restricted topics, there tends to be repetitions.
well, thats my opinion. -

Drug rehabilitation for teenagers! All of donations for my blog www.detiksmart.com are dedicated for volunteer's activities. It's a serious problem for Development countries. Do you have any idea for "No Drugs" campaign?
-
End the Occupation of Palestine. Stop the funding of the United States Government and of other countries to Israel and let them spend that money on their own people and causes like health care, education, victims of crime, crime prevention, and a host of other causes that the money could do great things.

We all get to vote starting Friday. We have until then to to come up with more ideas.
Anyone have any other suggestions?
It would be realy great if we can use our blogging voices to encourage some sort of action as opposed to simply raising awareness.
What can we blog about and motivate our readers and perhaps larger organizations to take specific actions that make a positive difference in the world? -
Two suggestions. This is the first.
Not my own. Charles Schultz, in an old Peanuts strip, drew Linus holding a sign. The sign read,
"Help Stamp Out Things That Need Stamping Out."
Can't argue with that. And it's marvelously non-committal. -
Second of two suggestions.
I'm not likely to follow up on this myself, by finding and vetting appropriate websites and organizations which deal with this problem. The reason is that I've pretty much had it with backing controversial causes for now.
Here it is: slavery, in Africa. It exists, it's more-or-less legal, and it's backed by some segments of a particular religion.
For anyone who is interested in a somewhat biased discussion, check out ( debate.org.uk/topics/trtracts/t12.htm ). The piece is written by an African who has a well-defined point of view. -
I suggest avoiding controversy. (That may come as a surprise to anyone who knows me; don't worry--the suggestion is limited to this context only.)
The thing is that we are a very diverse community with diverse views. We're setting out with these challenges to "do good" as a community, but there's no avoiding the fact that in many areas, our views of what is "good" may vary considerably. The recent discussion on sex offender registration is a great example.
I definitely think that we should all, as individuals and in more niche-oriented organizations, be willing to step out and take upopular opinions to convey important information and issues. But for a large and diverse group like this, targeting such a large and diverse audience, it seems that there are plenty of missions that are close enough to empirical "good" that everyone who is interested in advancing these challenges can get behind them.
For instance, not everyone is against animal testing, but I suspect that everyone can get behind the idea of adopting animals that will otherwise be euthanized before going out and forking over a bunch of money to a pet store. And "stop abuse" is so broad that it's open to everyone, because we might all have differing definitions of what constitutes abuse, but I would be very surprised to hear any of you step forward and say in good faith, "No...no...I think I'm in favor of abuse..." -

I actually participated in a challange to change the Pepsi's Aquafina Logo and it ended up being a success. Pepsi decided to spell out that the water source is from Public Tap Water (just purified) there's still work being done to change the mountain logo. Anyways I think that change is possible (power to the people!) and it can be done if we stick one challange and write about it.
That being said, with so many diverse group of people with so many different beliefs, It would be hard to choose just one, right?
I would like to propose world hunger. There's a site where you can donate but also if you are limited in your funds. You can click daily to help feed the world. So getting a word out about a project like this I think could make a difference.

That is very heavy.
I did a search and saw a film was made about Kevin Carter:
www.kevincarterfilm.com
It is shocking to think someone photographed that and just walked away, but who knows how I might react in such a situation. I think I can be very grateful for everything in my life right now.

hmmmmmm... it's difficult to find words when seeing that photo.
... even with so many diverse groups of bloggers, as MadameX says,
"I would be very surprised to hear any of you step forward and say in good faith, "No...no...I think I'm in favor of" .... not Putting an End to World Hunger!!
Let's organize a blogger campaign to Put An End To World Hunger
If this is the campaign that the group decides on, then BlogCatalog will create a separate page dedicated to this cause and describing the challenge and our purpose.
We will also create some blog graphics designed to raise awareness of the campaign among bloggers that aren't part of the blogcatalog community so that we can increase the volume of our voice.
I will discuss with GoodKnife to see if we can set up a Challenge page so that anyone who blogs on this day will have their avatar displayed along with a link to their blog. We may want to also find a way for people to make donations if they decide to.
What do you think? -
Not a bad idea but we may get rather a long list, or you could make it 10 or 15 a month that we focus on, a simple post with the list and a little outline about what the charity does, even if they get a small spike in traffic at least they have got somewhere that will bring awareness to them over the years.
There are so many small charities that struggle from year to year using resources collected from jumble sales or their own money. Plus it wouldnt be limited to just one country then. -
crkian... i suppose the list will be based on the particular cause we are blogging about. So for example, if it is blogging to end hunger, then the charities on the list will be involved in some way to ending hunger. As you say, even a small spike in traffic and perhaps even some donations contributes to their purpose.

I vote to raise awareness on Darfur and Modern Day Slavery
It's a worldwide problem.
"600,000 to 800,000 people are trafficked internationally every year. Approximately 80% of them are women and children." www.iAbolish.com -
It's hard to decide.
Obviously we can't change the War in Iraq, its pretty much stuck where it is.
Child obesity, possibly could be helped with blogging, Many people could get together, maybe get some funding in their area for a new workout program for kids, or help tell local kids to get out and have fun.
Child Abuse, No one wants child abuse, but how can we help? Is it feasible for bloggers of the nation to curb child abuse? We can talk about stamping it out, and we can push for funding, but all in all what will we do.
Gas prices, this might be a strictly US issue right now, but gas prices are high and companies like Exxon are making record profits. We could get gas prices down by sheer volume, and maybe do a stop using gas, or cut your driving campaign.
No Child Left Behind. I don't know if we can ever change this either. All I know is it is hurting schools in my area. But we can band together to tell W, or the candidates now that it is an issue and we would like it changed.
Starving Web Developers, well, thats my own issue, I need money for college and food, anyone want to give me a job?

Hi,
I'm Lori from Gouldsboro, PA. I am an Advocate For Lung Disease Awareness & Smokefree Living. I have my own website: www.loveyourlungsbreatheforlife.com and BLOG sandyellen.blogspot.com
November is COPD Awareness Month. How many of you know what COPD is? Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. A debilitating disease of the lungs, losing their elasticity and literally suffocating because you cannot breathe. This disease is mainly brought on from smoking
My dad passed away after a 13 year battle with COPD/Emphysema. We need to spread Awareness of this disease to all and to help those who smoke live a smokefree life.
Thank you,
Lori Palermo -
I'd like to see some animal related causes too. I have a few friends who run different rescue groups like www.gadab.org and Toni's Kitty Rescue to name of few. All bloggers would have to do is post a link to their sites and maybe add a little blurb about them.
