You don't know how to check your voice mail?

So, I've been at this job for about 7 months. In all this time, I've not received a single voice mail. Until today. I think.

A light on my desk phone has been flickering all morning, but the button says "HOLD". Why would my hold light be flickering, for two hours?

I looked around and found my user manual for my phone. Surprise, surprise, it's not real informative. In fact, what I can figure out from it seems wrong. The buttons are not where and named what the manual says they are.

I pick up the phone and press the HOLD button. Sure enough (and oddly) it connects to my voice mail box.

The polite, recorded voice for the system asks for my password. My password? This is the first time I've dealt with my voice mail box. What's my password?

The manual says the default code is my extension number, so I try it. No worky.

I try the code, again, twice more. Still nothing.

Crap on a stick. Now I'm going to have to go to a coworker and ask them how to check my voice mail.

Am I gonna look stupid or what? Been here more than half a year, and I don't know how to get my voice mail.

Have you been in this situation? Were you branded an idiot?

I already know I'm an idiot, but I just don't think my coworkers know it yet.

you're not an idiot, you just haven't dealt with this before.

the password for voicemails varies by different providers. you might ask someone with the same provider what their default password was, and hope that it works. another solution is to call the nearest office of your cellular provider and ask if you can get your password reset.

Just explain that your password isn't working - instead of getting into the fact that you are techno-stupid

Ask someone in your IT department for help. They think EVERYONE is an idiot, so it won't matter

IT reset my password and I got into my v-mail. Only the one message.

I was standing over the shoulder of the IT . . . what's the feminine equivalent of "guy"? I saw the number in the password field before she reset it, but I didn't recognize it, at all.
