    1. okokokok

      If you can't help me or reply to a question you need not.

    Something in Chimes of Freedom, but I can't pick. I had about eight candidates before I gave up and decided to just pick the whole song.
    1. okokokok
      that was a better choice than mine . . . I've been listening to a dylan marathon today . . .
  3. timethief
    I can't pick out a line just now. Everything Dylan every wrote is my choice. He wrote far to many good lyrics for me to be able to select just one line.
  4. Arashmania
    millions of them!!! the one that readily comes to mind: "you don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows"
    1. okokokok
      that's so right (or left) it's the line that christened the weather underground movement.
  5. BarbaraZak
    "The times they are a changin" and the sure are!

    Ah, Dylan the prophet...
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    "Gotta Serve Somebody"
    But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
    You're gonna have to serve somebody,
    Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
    But you're gonna have to serve somebody.
    Senor:
    Well, the last thing I remember before I stripped and kneeled
    Was that trainload of fools bogged down in a magnetic field.
    A gypsy with a broken flag and a flashing ring
    Said, "Son, this ain't a dream no more, it's the real thing."
    woops too many lines but this song is too cool. Get a listen to Tim Obriens version
    Glad you asked:
    top ten Dylan lines:
    “He just walked along alone, with his guilt so well concealed, muttered underneath his breath ‘nothing is revealed.’”
    “What drives me to you is what drives me insane.”
    “I said ‘oh come on now, you know about my debutante. And she said ‘your debutante just knows what you need, but I know what you want.”
    “May you always know the truth, and see the light surrounding you.”
    “I was hungry, and it was your world.”
    “he not busy being born is busy dying”
    “Don’t follow leaders but watch the parking meters.”
    “I’ll let you be in my dreams if I can be in yours”
    “‘Don’t reach out for me,’ she said, ‘can’t you see I’m drowning, too?’”
    “I offered up my innocence. I got repaid with scorn.”
    I'm also a huge fan of the instrumental "Final Theme" from the Pat Garret and Billy the Kid Soundtrack
  18. Arashmania
    "The Persian drunkard he follows me"
    "My love she laughs like the flowers"
    "the pump don't work cause the vandals took the handle"
    ~Subterranean Homesick Blues
  20. drjay1966
    Another great one (actually at the head of my latest blog post, but that's not a plug) (really, it isn't):
    "In fourteen months I've only smiled once, but I didn't do it consciously."
  21. Theresa111
    "People say you're going to have to live off the streets and now you're going to have to get ... used to it."
    From his tune: "Like A Rolling Stone."
  22. weemundo
    My fav : Like a rolling stone -> ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGS EVER !
  23. drjay1966
    but what's your favorite line from it, weemundo?
    1. weemundo
      Umm its a whole stanza
      Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people
      They're drinkin', thinkin' that they got it made
      Exchanging all kinds of precious gifts and things
      But you'd better lift your diamond ring, you'd better pawn it babe
      You used to be so amused
      At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
      Go to him now, he calls you, you can't refuse
      When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose
      You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal.
      How does it feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel ?
  24. SweetViolet
    "When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose."
    For much of my life, this line touched me.
  25. Ca1v1n
    "There was music in the cafes at night
    And revolution in the air" from Tangled Up in Blue
  26. saraho
    from "Masters of War"
    Like Judas of old
    You lie and deceive
    A world war can be won
    You want me to believe
    But I see through your eyes
    And I see through your brain
    Like I see through the water
    That runs down my drain
    You fasten all the triggers
    For the others to fire
    Then you set back and watch
    While the death count gets higher
    Then you hide in your mansion
    While the young people's blood
    Flows out of their bodies
    And is buried in the mud
  27. XanthePat
    How many roads must man walk down before you call him a man
    the opening line from blowing in the wind.
  28. okokokok
    Thanks everyone - I listened to the songs listed today from bottom to top. . . It's been kind of neat. . . I have to select my second favorite . . . line in order to pick the next tune to play . . So I chose - Bob Dylan's 115th Dream
    He said his name was Columbus
    I just said, "Good luck."
  29. drjay1966
    You need more?
    "shedding off one more layer of skin, keeping one step ahead of the persecutor within"
    "disillusioned words like bullets bark as human gods aim for their mark and make everything from toy guns that spark and flesh-colored christs that glow in the dark--it's easy to see without looking too hard that not much is really sacred"
    "I'm trying to get to heaven before they close the door"
    "one more cup of coffee 'fore I go to the valley below"
    "I met one man who was wounded in love, I met another man who was wounded in hatred"
    "hey hey Woody Guthrie I wrote you a song, 'bout a funny old world that's a' coming along, see it's sick and it's hungry, it's tired and it's torn, it looks like it's a dyin' and it's hardly been born"
    "one of these days and it won't be long, goin' down to the valley and sing my song, sing it loud, sing it strong, let the echo decide if I was right or wrong."
    "ring them bells ye heathen from the city that dreams"
    "she don't wanna remind me, she knows this car would go out of control"
  30. drjay1966
    "time passes slowly when you're lost in a dream"
    "build me a cabin in Utah, marry me a wife, catch rainbow trout, have a buncha kids who call me pa, that must be what it's all about"
    "one thing for sure, there ain't no cure, when you throw it all away"
    "as everybody knelt to pray, the drifter did escape"
    "I think we better talk this over, maybe when we both get sober"
  33. okokokok
    I have to admit that a couple of these I had to look up. For now. . .
    Gon' walk down that dirt road, 'til someone lets me ride (dirt road blues)
  34. boytrotters
    All of Highlands, definitely.
    1. Arashmania
      that's a brilliant song, yes.
  35. Arashmania
    "The only thing I knew how to do
    Was to keep on keeping on
    like a bird that flew
    tangled up in blue."
  36. drjay1966
    Okay, one more (for now):
    "I never could learn to drink that blood and to call it wine."
    1. Arashmania
      where's that from? and i thought i knew them all!
    2. drjay1966
      "Tight Connection to My Heart" from the Empire Burlesque album, on which you'll also find "Dark Eyes," with the immortal line:
      "They tell me revenge is sweet, and from where they stand I'm sure it is."
    3. Arashmania
      Thanks! i don't know any songs of that album.... I'll have to look into it!
  37. okokokok
    I have a certain sadness when these threads play themselves out. This was fun. . . Thanks for everyone who participated - especially to new freinds.
    An' here I sit so patiently
    Waiting to find out what price
    You have to pay to get out of
    Going through all these things twice.
  38. Anniepooh
    Wait! Someone actually understood him?
    1. drjay1966
      You tryin' to stir up trouble, Anniepooh?
      Actually, that reminds me of another Dylan line (also from the aforementioned and widely maligned Empire Burlesque album):
      "I don't mind a reasonable amount of trouble; trouble always comes to pass."
  39. polybore
    Tangled up in Blue.
  40. Arashmania
    oh oh wait....i got another one!
    "you can't win with a losing hand"
    "if the bible is right, the world will explode"
    from "things have changed"
  41. drjay1966
    I actually didn't know those...that one's only available on the soundtrack to the Michael Douglas movie, right?
  42. drjay1966
    Though that reminds me of another '90's rarity, "Dignity"
    "I've heard the tongues of angels and the tongues of men, and there wasn't any difference to me."
  43. Arashmania
    yeah it's off the soundtrack and it won an Oscar ... plus it's one of my favorite!
  44. Wisco
    I just had to resurrect this thread as I listen to Tell Tale Signs: the Bootleg Series vol. 8, featuring an absolutely stunning eight minute song about the American Civil War called "'Cross the Green Mountain."
    "A letter to mother came today
    Gun shot wound to the breast is what it did say
    But he'll be better soon, he's in a hospital bed
    But he'll never be better, he's already dead."
  48. kdawg68
    From "My Back Pages"
    -"in a solider's stance I aim my hand
    at the mongrel dogs who teach.
    Fearing not I've become my enemy,
    in the instance that I preach."
    Or
    From "Chimes of Freedom"
    "...Tolling for the searching ones, on their speechless, seeking trail
    For the lonesome-hearted lovers with too personal a tale
    An' for each unharmful, gentle soul misplaced inside a jail
    An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing."
    All done rather well later on by the Byrds.
  49. Dan33185
    "I think of myself more as a song and dance man."
