I can't pick one and could have a list 100 names long but these come readily to mind:

    Bill Hicks
    Frankie Howerd
    Peter Cook
    Les Dawson
    Richard Pryor
    Larry David
  2. Klara

In terms of stand-up, I like Eddie Izzard and Bob Newhart. Both smart, funny and with quirky takes on things.

That's a good question--hard to pick just one. I like Brian Reagan quite a bit, though. (Although he doesn't really hold a candle to George Carlin.)

Chelsea Handler USED to be funny before she moved in with the president of E channel. Her show now is so-so compared to her previous show...

There was but one a level above others: Richard Pryor
(the best way to attack racism and other social ills is with humor first - Pryor's writer Paul Mooney)

And the legend, Jackie Gleason, both had his own 1 hr tv show and OWNED the network by age 26 after being a standup comic - never rehearsed, all his tv work was live.. underappreciated genius.
"All in my head eh? Well, if you look there you know what you'll find? Nothing!" - Gleason as Ralph Kramden

However, others have been very good: George Carlin, Rodney Dangerfield (Doug Kenney, his first time around?), Elaine Boosler, Lewis Black ("Red, White, and Screwed", great political satirist)

"Money may not be everything, but its way ahead of whatever's in second place" - Dangerfield

"Yeah, when my parents heard I was getting my own Showtime special, my mom said 'a fortune on college, pissed away!'" - Boosler

"I got yer solution for the homeless-give em all the golf courses; golf ain't a sport, it's men in ugly clothes walking" - Carlin

"I die laughing when I hear Christians trying to explain the Bible - ask us Jews, we wrote it! and we walk among you!" - Black

-- jose (wordhumor.blogspot.com, where we prove that Francis Bacon was Shakespears, well Edmund Bucke proved it in 1900)

ps - Yes, Chelsea is very good, and Jon Stewart
