I kinda like the idea of zombie apocalypse, personally.
  2. Bonnielicious
I reckon it will be a nuclear explosion.

one is not enough, but yes, highly probable. this might go under 5)

The withdrawal of incandescent light bulbs from human civilization. Who can observe this, the ultimate stupidity, and say, with a straight face, that civilization as we know it is not doomed?

#5 - third world war. Should be any time now.

6)total worldwide crop failure (plant virus)
7)ecocatastrophe-- massive global poisoning of all water supplies.
    8) population decline through sterilization and voluntary birth control that combines with the other aforementioned things.

my guess would be Gozer the Gozerian...

but barring that, I would say World War II is probably a pretty likely scenario.

World War II ??? I thought it was over and real too?!!
    2. rickbman
ahh... sorry... missed and "I" in there... that is what I get for not paying attention to what I am typing. Should have said World War III.
    3. busylizzy
I prefer to think it might be the Sta Puft marshmallow man

Favourite would be the aliens. Intergalactic heroes saving their own planet getting punched through the Earth a few thousand times until they destroy the planet.

Okay, I've been watching too many cartoons.

Most likely, though, is probably the world war followed closely behind by the deadly virus.

Love/Desire (used sadistically) it is a slow burn but very effective
and has more than enough capacity to end all things.
Don't underestimate what I'm saying here.

      Yes indeed!

Actually the most likely is none of those things, it is eventual eco-collapse along the lines of the Trobriand Islanders, or the Anasazi, where the population gets so dense that people no longer have enough resources to feed each other, the land gives out, people starve, regress towards barbarism, and start eating each other. Jared Diamond has an excellent book called Collapse which gives these as examples as well as the Maya. In some ways this scenario looks like it is not that far off in some parts of the world give it fifty to a hundred years and we might start having exoduses from the larger population centers if we don't change. Some of the changes we see with all the eco-consciousness remind me very much of what happened with the Maya a long time ago.

      "and start eating each other".
Is that such a bad thing? I've been doing it for years.

Igree, OVERPOPULATION can be number 6. I read somewhere how Earth can sustain about 12bn people and with today's pop growth that number will be achieved very soon. This also might be the only BIG problem that doesn't have any proper response just yet.

Reading these likely causes of human distinction does seem a little scary in deed!
  12. fczamora
    human greed. simple.
  13. Achyut
Probably a combination of many factors but mainly virus, diseases and environmental problems like global warming, pollution etc
  14. TZY
I don't have any FAVORITE, but the most probable would be global warming and evil deeds done by humans.

Jeunelle and her overpowering sex appeal....

@drjay1966....ROFLMAO...you could very well be right about that

Ever heard of the Yellowstone Supervolcano? It's wobbling under the ground right now.

My other favorites include meteor and other natural disasters.

Deadly Virus + Zombies. Not only will your friends die because of the virus, they'll be after you too!

Sounds like the story of my life. I'm presently chased all over the web. Good God

The takeover of genetically modified wheat (I actually read this one on a doom site, wish I remembered the link, it was a good one!)
    1. webomatik
GM wheat is direct consequence of overpopulation (number 6)

Antibiotic-resistant germs. We're pumping antibiotics to everything: chickens, pigs, dogs, cows, first sign of a running nose... we're breeding super germs and we don't even know it.
    1. webomatik
True but this one will lead to number 1, deadly virus. When drugstores are at same marketing level as food stores, there must be something wrong.

The Chicago Cubs win a World Series and God wraps things up with a thunderous "Well, that was the last one on the list."

Luckily, the Cubs management has been averting apocalypse now for a century!
  27. Agit8r
    What # is religion?

I guess that I'll file that under 5
