Discussions

Since the microwave discussion is going well let me ask another.

What is your favorite kitchen gadget, and why?

For me I like my cordless electric kettle. Fill it up and when it boils pull it off the base and pour it where every you need water.

For hand held gadgets I like my mortar and pestle. There is a lot of satisfaction in whacking the hell out whatever I put in there with the heavy granite pestle.

I have an old timey jar opener I love. So simple, and so incredibly useful

In terms of electronics, my lovely retro-look lime green coffeemaker which matches my green Depression glass-- and which has a timer on it, so the coffee's made when I get up...

That thing is on my best friend list.

I used to like having a coffee pot with a timer but after moving to a town with incredibly hard water I started going through them too fast. I went from making a pot of coffee in about five minutes the day I arrived to it taking more than 30 minutes within a month. After going through four pots in six months I went to a french press pot and an electric kettle which I have a mechanical timer I use at the outlet for. I am actually happy I made the switch, the coffee tastes much better to me.

I'd never heard of that. Yes, a half-hour pot of coffee is TOO long. Especially when that vital caffeine is needed ASAP!

The fridge because it's always full of tasty food

    My coffee bean grinder.
  4. morgantj
    the dishwasher
  5. starcasm
yeah, I really can't live without my electric kettle either, or my bean grinder, or my coffee maker. I guess I could make coffee just with my electric kettle and bean grinder, though.

that electric mosquito swatter- i believe that counts as a kitchen gadget.. helps me re-enact star wars in real life:)

dishwasher. We ended up completely remodeling our kitchen (tore everything down to the studs) just so that we could get a dishwasher in there. I would also be comatose without my coffee grinder and my coffee maker. And for nostalgia's sake, I'll throw in my grandma's KitchenAid. It's kind of cool to use the same appliance my grandma used.

    wooden spoon **innocent look**
    1. RTBjr73
I pictured you with a metal cleaver...sorry for profiling.
    2. Shy
It was a close call between a meat tenderiser and a wooden spoon but now you throw metal cleaver into my thoughts hmmmmm
    3. RTBjr73
Hey...anything worth doing is worth doing right.
    4. bradhart
@Shy in my last thread you mention the need to actually own underwear and now you are into wooden spoons I might start to think something kinky about you, at the very least you might not be too shy...
    5. Shy
**big grin** I am shy, by name and kinky as.............

My Kitchen Aid 5 Quart Mixer and my heat resistant rubber scraper. It is pink with sparkles inside. My heavy teflon skillets, varying sizes. My stainless measuring cups, whisks and spoons. My glass measuring mixing bowls with handles and snap on lids. My mixing bowls and bowl scraper. My chefs uniform, clogs, aprons and hand towels. Lastly baking dishes, pie pans and blow torche` for creme brulee`. My recipes and all ingredients. Okay that's about it.

blow torches are for so much more than creme brule. I had a pork roast tonight with a section of cracklin that just did not want to crackle. out came the torch. I don't screw around either, I use a plumbers butane torch.

Something not made by or sold by Ronco or K-Tel and does not require batteries to operate.
    1. theresak
I think the Ronco Chop-O-Matic is manually operated. It's been around since the 50's...
  14. sisterofmercy
Umm the popcorn maker, it's the only one I'm really trusted with.
  15. Anok
I have too many that I like.

I love the electric gadgetry stuff like my coffee maker, kitchenaid (from the 50's I might add, it's not "retro" it's the real deal ), and hand mixer.

For non electric stuff I love my grandmother's bean grinder (hand crank), tea kettle, forks, my super awesome do-everything knife, and I have one glass that I use for everything from drinking juice to liquefying corn starch to cutting the perfect sugar cookie or biscuit shape
    1. aningeniousname
Is it just me or does "Grandma's bean grinder" sound like a filthy euphemism for Granny's favourite toy.
  16. Rozie818
My knife, it slices it dices and Oh it can core an apple.
I tend to use the knife gadget more than any other in the kitchen.
I smash my garlic, butterfly my meats and shrimps and I like to stir with a wooden spoon when I am mixing. More work sure, but more control and pleasure.

I avoid the kitchen like the plague the only thing I use on a regular basis is the sink when I am washing dishes. I don't do dishwashers because I have this weird feeling that dishwashers can't get the dishes as clean as I can.

Brita water pitcher. Wooden lemon reamer.

For nostalgic reasons, I love my box grater. My mother received it as a bridal shower present in 1965 and gave it to me when I was putting together my first household. Growing up, I used to have the job of grating carrots for salad or shredding cheese for home-made pizza.

Now I use it as a first kitchen tool for my own children. They love to help.
    1. bradhart
It is hard to go wrong with a good functional piece of equipment. My box grater is actually a pyramid type with big round non slip feet. I don't have much call for it recently but I am glad I have it when I need it.
    2. MidwestMom
Mine is all metal, and has the patent number stamped into the metal along with the town in Ohio where it was made.

It's such an old friend that I can remember using as far back as I can remember being in the kitchen.
    3. bradhart
I have one like that, but after using one with the slip resistant feet I was sold on it as a safety feature. Even on a wet corian counter those little feet stay put which is much for me as it is for my son who likes to help. Now if I could get him not to grate his knuckles I would be in a lot better shape...

Mine is the same as yours, I LOVE my cordless electric teakettle and I love the design.

Knife....... I love cutting cabbages & cucumbers
  22. PotatoChef
Without a doubt the slicer/dicer/miracle infomercial thingy.

I swear it works great. You can slice an entire potato paper thin (if that is how you want it) in about 15 seconds. It is amazing.
  23. cookingasshole
    Hamilton Beach food processor
you can make a pie crust in 30 sec.
  24. Sashg80
I love the mortar and pestle. It's perfect for everything from whole spice marinades, muddled cocktails and avoiding grinding on a bad headache day.

Also, the big wok I use for stir frying vegetables, without adding extra oil, water or cream. It's pure convenience.
