My sister has a loud high pitched voice when she is excited and I always nod my head to remind her to turn it down. There are singers that have different singing voices compared to their speaking voices. I have a light speaking voice and I hate it because it makes me sound like an adolescent but I can sing in very low notes. How's your speaking voice by the way?

Depends who I am speaking too, but I am usually quietly spoken.
  2. aspotofblog
    I sound like a man
    1. dbowles1017
      I wonder why that is...
    2. LGramlich
I do, too. Very low tone.
  3. geekchick
I sound great--but that's because I train people who have voice problems like yours. I can make my voice carry across the room, or die just on the other side of the table, at the exact same volume. I have a young-sounding, feminine voice (not girlish).
  4. nothingprofound
I once heard my speaking voice on a tape recorder and I sounded like Bugs Bunny meets Mickey Mouse. My voice is in the upper register and the stranger on the other end of the telephone receiver invariably says:"Can I help you, M'am?"
  5. timethief
I think my speaking voice which is low toned and lilting. When I'm addressing a small group or delivering a speech to a larger audience I think my voice sounds like a school teacher's voice and my sister thinks the same about her voice too.

My husband and my sister's husband and all our family members complain saying that we sound so much alike that they have to look to see who is speaking to be sure. We even have the same laugh. When the phone is where family members are trying to sort us out one from the other, we have been known to play around just a little bit and have some fun with confusing them ... lol

The interesting thing is that although I love to sing, my sis has no interest in it and claims she can't carry a tune. Well, I doubt that but she never sings and I rarely stop.
    1. conditionalcog
My brother and I have similar voices also. It's funny how our parents have difficulty knowing which one of us is on the other end of the phone line.
  6. ArsenicCookies
I actually haven't a clue what my own voice sounds like. I suppose somewhat childish as telemarketers often ask if my parents are home
  7. lavonnedoll
I've been mistaken for a child(are your parents home, I got this a few times after answering the phone), and I've been called sir a few times. I don't care for my voice it sounds too much like my moms.
  8. celticmusicfan
Thanks for the inputs guys. Since I can't really hear you from the other end of the computer, a brief description helps a lot.
  9. greencurmudgeon
I recorded my voice reading poetry for one of my blog posts:

    1. celticmusicfan
I've listened to it.I am impressed
    2. Maladjusted
G.C.: the voice recording was surprising. I somehow have always been under the impression that you were English!

      (Love Prufrock, of course).

      Best,

      -Mal

      @Mal

No, I'm originally from the USA.
    4. crpitt
      That was a lovely reading.

I went retro last night and listened to the BBC Radio 4 dramatisation of The Hobbit on Tape! I would have much preferred listening to your voice than the horrid fellow that voices Gandalf in that version.
    5. greencurmudgeon
      @Claire

Thank you very much. I'm flattered.
    6. crpitt

Jenn aka thriftshopromnatic is a big fan of audio tapes, so have been meaning to give those a whirl for the longest time, as they have just been gathering dust upon the book shelf.

As much as I enjoyed the story, the wrong voices for certain characters lessened the pleasurable experience.
    7. greencurmudgeon
      @Claire

It's really rather funny that you should mention I would make a good Gandalf, by the way...at one company in which I worked, on the team I led we had three developers who had the pseudo-nicknames of Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli.
    8. cathy13
      Well I am gobsmacked!
I thought you had a British accent!
Now I have to re read all the limericks in a different voice in my head
    9. greencurmudgeon
      @Cathy

I've lived here for over 20 years, so I'm a dual national.

I clicked it and watched a video about becoming Woody's fan on FB.
  10. idealpinkrose
I'm a shy type person with someone that I don't know well so I have a very silent voice that they could hardly hear me. I still have quiet voice when I talked to friends or family but I always keep my voice down specially when i'm in a public area.
  11. NYCGirl
My voice is kind of little-girl-y. And quiet.

    1. dbowles1017
You look too cute in the new pic.
  13. Rainhat
I've been told my voice sounds exactly the same live and recorded, and I sing in pretty much the same register as I speak. So if you've ever heard one of my songs, that's how I normally sound.
  14. ThriftShopRomantic
You can hear me on my sound file post "Henry the Eighth Goes to Counseling."

    www.cabbagesnkings.net/2009/07/henry-eighth-goes-to-counseling-now.html
  15. legbamel
I'm always surprised to hear my recorded voice. It's a fair amount higher than it sounds to me when I speak and I don't really care for it. I have to make a conscious effort to keep it low and speak slowly when I know I'm going to be taped because I tend toward the squeakier range of normal and normally speak very quickly.
    1. greencurmudgeon
Unfortunately, the resonance inside one's head makes one's voice sound quite different. I too am generally surprised when I hear a recording of myself...I don't listen to my own voice as I find the mismatch rather odd.
  16. aningeniousname
I have a voice so beautiful birds are constantly smacking into my windows after being lured by my soft lilting tones. Every morning I have to go out with a shovel and a bin bag and clear the corpses up, they blame cats for the demise of the Sparrow population but it was actually me singing arias from La traviata in made up Italian.
    1. greencurmudgeon
I don't think singing "Just one Cornetto" over and over is going to be mistaken for Italian any time soon.
    2. aningeniousname
Oh no I go the whole way, I even dress as Callas and just end all the words with ia or icchi.
It is quite effective in a scary bates motel kind of way.
    3. greencurmudgeon
      @anin

Oh so you're the fellow who sang: "I haveia a lovelia bunchia of Coconuticchi. Theyia standicchi in a rowia!"
    4. nothingprofound
I don't blame those sparrows. It's an experience no cultured person would ever want to miss.
    5. legbamel
I'm guessing this is how anin thinks he sounds.
      www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1YgfxjP-aU
    6. aningeniousname
      @Green
Oh yeah, I speak Italian like Chico Marx and English like Harpo.

      @Np
I can send you a video for a special one time only introductory price of just 500 dollars!!!! Yes for just 500 dollars you to could own this rare piece of musical history!!!!!!

      @Legsy
Mines better because my Italian is done in a Yorkshire accent.
    7. legbamel
You mean you sound like a Yorkie that thinks it's a greyhound?
    8. nothingprofound
Anin: I'm out in the street right doing a striptease, trying to raise the money. Please please-don't offer that video to anyone else.
  17. wagerwitch
I have a good speaking voice for recording.

I can be husky and deep or light and lilting.

Singing is a bit odd tho - I don't know how to explain my singing voice. LOL!
    1. Stillthinking
You do have a great speaking voice for recording! I think being a little husky voiced sounds better when its recorded.

I think I sound very, very young.

    4. Rory
Funny, you sound just like I thought you would!! (That's all good.)
    5. cathy13
Yes you sound like you should be on morning radio!
    6. dbowles1017

    7. wagerwitch
Awww DB - I sound like that before my coffee...

Right now - it's just before bed tho...

      LOL!
    8. celticmusicfan
Wow you sound really great. You should do voice overs for superhero characters!
    9. bettieblogger
Wow, Wager ... you really do sound like you could do radio... I can almost "hear" you smiling... I know, you don't hear a smile but you get my drift. Very pleasant and positive sounding!

As for myself, my voice is of a lower tone and a bit raspy ... the b/f says I have that Kim Karnes thang going on lol ..

He also says that when I am on the phone my tone gets a bit higher and flirtatious even though I always disagree with him on that point. Hmmm, maybe I should call him on his next break lol!!
  18. Stillthinking
I thought we should resurrect the BC audio voice library.

    www.kobrascorner.com/audio/bc/
    1. greencurmudgeon
      You do sound quite young!
    2. Rainhat
Heh, that's interesting. If you see a picture of someone, you can usually sort of guess what their voice sounds like and not be completely off. Epi's voice completely blew me away, though, I had envisioned her as more loud and boisterous. I guess the pictures I've seen weren't all that representative...
    3. cathy13
Crpitt's voice is the only one that surprised me!
I pretty much was bang on for the rest. (Couldn't hear Anok's though)
    4. Epicharis
hehe...I suppose my BBC Radio 4 voice doesn't quite chime with the pics I posted!
    5. cathy13
Epi, your voice is very sexy!
    6. Epicharis
hahaha! When this topic came round the first time it was suggested the WW and I start up a phone sex line... hehe
    7. crpitt
@Cathy Not posh enough for you? lol
    8. wagerwitch
Epi - we should... LMAO - we could be RICH!!
  19. rcrane52
the best part of being deaf is not hearing your own voice.
    i'm not deaf.
but if i were that would be the best part.
  20. Agit8r
I speak in a low rumble. It takes a bit of deliberate effort to raise the pitch at the same time as volume. Otherwise I just sound angry
  21. Anok
My voice is higher than what I think it sounds like, but that's not saying much

When speaking in public I know my voice is on the lower side, clear, loud, and quite confident. When not speaking in public my voice is a bit quieter, fast paced, maybe a little higher depending on how excited I get.

Some of you here have heard my voice, what do you think?
    1. greencurmudgeon
Unfortunately the link to the archive that Still posted doesn't work for your recording.
    2. Anok
Yeah that recording was terrible - I don't have a microphone or anything like that
    3. crpitt
I think you nailed it Anokky

Definitely get more animated the more excited you get..

    4. Anok
LOL... yeah I do tend to talk with my body as much as I do with my mouth
  22. pinoyhood
my voice makes you awake or asleep...and i kinda sound like a preacher
  23. dosox
    low & soft
  24. cathy13
Thanks to WW for this speaking device...very cool!
You can hear me in all my scatter brained glory!

When I sing I sound like Patsy Cline!
    1. Rory
Trust me ... this is REALLY her in a nutshell!!
    2. dbowles1017
YES!!! I got mentioned! I was expecting you to sound like that... oddly enough.
    3. cathy13
      What? Insane??????
    4. dbowles1017
That and, cheerful. Really really cheerful
    5. cathy13
Yes, but you must remember I am a Gemini and menopausal. So the cheerfullness can be swapped out for the Wicked Witch of the East in an instant and then back again!

      Makes for a lively household
    6. dbowles1017
Haha. I want to hear the recording.
    7. cathy13
      Trust me you don't!
Rory will attest to the fact that it is true though!
He equates it to a pterodactyl!

Haha! Now I really want to hear it
    10. cathy13
      @ NP - I am sorry!
You were in my thoughts but as you heard, things have a hard time coming out of my mouth!

*sobs and runs off to corner*

@Derek - and usually involves many, many swear words!
    11. dbowles1017
You're not helping your case any...
    12. TJlubrano
Cathy! You sound just like I imagined ! Oh and you mentioned me as well ^_^. You're very sweet!!
    13. wagerwitch
      ROFLMFFAO!!!

      "HOW DO YOU STOP IT?????""""""
That's funny as all get out!

OK - really I'm gonna sleep - I know it... LOL!
  25. chicky401
With me it depends on the situation. I can be very loud when I want or need to be. I have a hearder time being soft spoken but it can be done. Let's just say I can get people's attention when I need to or want to.
    1. cathy13
      A man of few words!
Funny, even though I know you are from Witchita, I never for a
moment imagined a strong southern accent!

      *swoons and fans self*
    2. dbowles1017
I don't have a southern accent! People from the south think I'm from the north, people from the north think I'm from the south... I'm from the middle dammit!
    3. cathy13
If you don't have a southern accent then why do you say your name is "Day - ick"
    4. dbowles1017
You are hearing things. I clearly said "Hey, what's up, this is Derek (dare-ick), this is my voice, the end"
    5. TJlubrano
Didn't thought you had a strong accent either. It's kind of laid back with the 'yo whazzup' and stuff like that hehe ^_^
    6. dbowles1017
That's because I am pretty laid back. And I don't have a strong accent. Ya'lls is just ignant ya here!
    7. Epicharis
      not what I was expecting...
    8. TJlubrano
You're not going to start throwing some corn are you? If you are, make it into popcorn first
    9. dbowles1017
      epi- What were you expecting?

TJ- -_- Nebraska is the corn state.
    10. Epicharis
      I'm not sure...but everytime I hear someone's voice it's not what I was expecting!
    11. TJlubrano
      Oh yeah shoot -_-''
    12. cathy13
      Throw Sunflowers then!
    13. dbowles1017
tj- Yeah, get it right next time! (although there are a bunch of farmers with sweet corn)

Cathy- I wouldn't dare waste a good sunflower!
    14. TJlubrano
Oh thanks Cathy, for coming to my rescue!

Yeah yeah I will read up before I post. But DB, throw some sun flowers instead. While you at it...do a little sunny dance. I think you can wear the perfect outfit for that.
    15. dbowles1017
      I don't do dances.
    16. TJlubrano
Once you see the sunny flowers in the sky, a dance will come and your feet will fly.

      Just wait and see.
    17. cathy13
This is Derek starting his Sunflower Dance!

    18. dbowles1017
      I haven't seen a sunflower in years.

      CATHY! Your picture fails!
    19. TJlubrano
whaha Derek's Sunflower dance...it does have a ring to it!

Well then maybe when you go to sleep ^_^
    20. dbowles1017
      Nope, sorry.
    21. cathy13
Tut tut Derek my boy....I think it reigns supreme!
    22. dbowles1017
      I cant see it
    23. TJlubrano
DB - well don't wake up screaming 'mommy the sun flowers are going to get me!'...^_^

Cathy - the picture hasn't shown up. Was is that scary?
    24. cathy13
OH, you mean you literally cannot see the image?
    25. dbowles1017
Yeah, I literally cant see it

      tj- I won't don't worry
    26. TJlubrano
okay thank you! Now I can sleep well myself.
    27. Anok
      I couldn't hear anything?
    28. dbowles1017
      Are your speakers on?
    29. Anok
Yep, I would hit play, and it's as if the recording is only a second long - because within at the blink of an eye it goes back to the beginning again

      I'll try again, though.

      No, it's not working.
    30. dbowles1017
Weird. There's like a second of pause at the beginning but that's it
    31. wagerwitch
Hey D... By the way what is WIWWD (woman I wish would die?)

      LMAO!

Nice voice - short staccato statements.

      The end.

      LOL!
    32. dbowles1017
      yeah... something like that

Thanks, I just didn't know what to say (surprising huh?) hence the short statement
  26. cindygeenotes
I tend to speak quietly, but I've learned how to project my voice for various purposes. It is interesting how we hear our recorded voice different than it sounds in our heads. I've always found that odd myself.

You can hear bob-basic recordings of my speaking voice and singing voice on my May posts at dragyourfeet.wordpress.com/2009/05/
    1. cathy13
      WOW Cindy! You sing beautifully!
    2. celticmusicfan
Wow you can carry a tune well. Beautifully done. And oh is that a Boesendorfer you're playing? It sounds distinctive.
    3. cindygeenotes
Thanks for the comments on my singing. Celtic, you have a sharp ear! It is not a Bosendorfer. But it likely copied some of the traditional pianomaking styles at the turn of the century. It's a 1908 Nordheimer, one of the oldest piano makers in Canada.
    4. wagerwitch
VERY nice Cindy - very very very nice!

You have "balls" if you don't mind me saying so... LOL!

Excellent carriage - and very personable!
  27. cathy13
@ Derek - Don't you dammit me boy!
    j/k

I do detect a hint of south!

Everyone go check it out and tell Derek he is a "SAWTHENER"
    1. dbowles1017
      Lies, lies and deceit!
    2. cathy13
Nothing wrong with a southern drawl.....kinda sexy actually.
Okay with that said .....you do not sound southern!
    3. dbowles1017
Haha! I promise you, I only sound southern when I'm around my Oklahomian family.
  28. TJlubrano
    What a funny thread!!

Hmm my speaking voice. Well it's normal, I guess. I can sound kinda girlie. But not girlie girlie...you know what I mean?
But when I sing, it's quite low. Sometimes I think 'Wow where did that come from'.

Oh and I don't like my voice recorded! Not at all -_-''
  29. chrissymarie321
    It is a funny thread!
I sound like a turnip muncher
    1. cathy13
      What does that sound like?
    2. chrissymarie321
Sort of like a female version of a tractor driver with a slightly welsh intonation
  30. conditionalcog
I have a relatively low tone to my voice- sometimes baritone, sometimes bass. I have a tendency to speak too loudly, particularly when I'm excited about a particular topic. I think it's the teacher voice wanting to come out. I am often reminded by friends and family to use my "indoor voice."
  31. wagerwitch
VOKI yourself it's free - it's fairly easy - and you put it on your blog - come back here and post your voice link on your blog!

    3. jafabrit
I reserve Geordie for family, or fellow Northerners, or for my glaswegian neighbour.
I do sound awfully posh though don't I LOL! not on purpose, honest! lol! during the day I can weave in and out of accents unconsciously but on vid I am conscious of how I am speaking.
ps. is art teacher posh a good thing huh! eh?

      pps. thanks celtimusicfan

    6. jafabrit
Yes, I get such a funny reaction to sales people when I say with a bit of the Queenly twang, "no, I can't be arsed".
It is such a conundrum, did she say a rude word, but she sounded so posh?
    7. crpitt
Ha! I think that is in my top five things I say a lot.

I think you can get away with murder in the US with a Brit accent
    8. jafabrit
hee!hee! I know, it's bloody grate man! and I often do.

ps. great misspelled on purpose to emphasize Geordie.

REALLY! Oh I must hear that!
  34. kdawg68
Somewhere waaaaay back here in the discussions from over a year ago is a recording of me talking about Big Brown heading into the 2008 FLorida Derby. I was on a podcast/radio broadcast with a group here in Baltimore that did the morning ESPN radio show back then.
    1. Anok
Ha! That's right! You have a very smooth voice with a slight drawl. Love it
    2. kdawg68
Ah, she remembers! That southern draw thing comes and goes - it's like my eyes. They change from brown to green depending on what I"m wearing (or how much B.S. I'm spewing).
  35. LolitaV
i have no idea, but i'd say girlie but firm most defenitely, i giggle a lot when I talk.

I hope it helps and I apologise in advance for promoting.

My site has to do with lowering your speaking voice/making your voice deeper. I'll be launching a video course soon about safe vocal exercises that naturally deepen your voice.

Everybody that talks to me by phone ask me if I'm from up North or even California for some reason. I'm a native Texan and do say ya'll once in a while when I least expect it, otherwise my voice is low and relaxing to others or fast and articulate depending on the situation. I have a unique "betty rubble" laugh as everyone explains it. There is no other way to laugh but to let it out from deep down inside! Can't help it. Interesting question.

I don't like mine. At all really. I have this southern twang thing goin' on, and I tend to talk real fast and upspeak when I get excited. I don't like hearing my own voice at all really.

You know what? I love souther American accent. I don't know why but for me it sounds really gorgeous.

I have a great speaking voice, which I've previously utilized in radio and tv news endeavors. But I can't sing a lick! No singing voice whatsoever.

This is what I have suspected for sometime. I would love to hear it one day

As previously stated, my speaking voice is deep and I have been mistaken for Frankenstein. I can't recall what I may have said to get someone's panties in a knot but for those who are actually interested in the discussion I hope you get this before my comment gets removed again.

Mwahahaha that's so funny. It would surprise you that there are people who go for that kind

Everyone who calls asks me if my mommy is home. A little annoying because I AM the mom! I've also been told too many times that I should work for a 900 service *sigh* - this from a boss who had to monitor our phone calls. Made me wonder what was going on in his office when I was on the phone.

Anyhow - I'm not taken very seriously until people realize that I'm 41 and not 15.

I think my voice sounds a bit nasally, but my family doesn't think so. My tone is a bit deep for my liking, but apparently a lot of female voice-overs are deep, so that's good for me!

Your tone of voice certainly affects how others view you. It also affects how you view yourself. If you are pleased with your voice, then you will have a higher confidence level. That's why it is an important skill to polish. If you are unable to change your voice, however, don't sweat it. Make it work for you. After all, you are a unique and special individual, and your different style of speaking makes you more interesting as a person. It is important to try to improve yourself, but never get upset about who you are, as long as you are not hurting anyone else and especially if you cannot change it.

    BTW, I am Tenori I

I've never been very self-conscious of my speaking voice. Its not about what it sounds like, its about how you use it, and how you speak. That is what makes someone a great orator, not the sound of their voice.

I have an alto voice, full and throaty but I tend to speak softer to men than women. And when I want something my voice gets VERY soft and smooth. When I sing I sing alto, so there isn't much variation.

I have a young sounding voice, I speak with a slight lilt.. I am not crazy about hearing myself recorded. I always think I should work on that pronunciation.. I like the sound of my voice on a microphone, deep and mellow, with warm clarity.

I sound somewhat like Karen Carpenter when I sing.

I lisped during my childhood and got made fun of terribly so I have trained myself to pronounce each word clearly and precisely.. lol! No more stuttering and lisping.. I could be a public speaker if I would stop listening to any recordings of my voice, and being so critical of them and get past my nerves, Hand me a mic and I can sing my heart out, but speaking.. I forget what I am gonna say.. lol!!!

We must sound very much the same - I have a very Karen Carpenter singing voice. I don't like my speaking voice when I hear it recorded, either.

I sounded like a kid for years! I now have a deeper and older voice in my fifties. Things do change. :-)

Wow I really hate my light speaking voice but you've given me hope.
  49. Onchong
If you no longer want the tone of your voice you were born with, it's time for a change. Improving your posture will allow your voice to project farther and more clearly in a more resonantly-pleasing way.

I actually recently wrote about how you can develop a "better" speaking voice: hypnodepot.com/hypnotic-voice-how-to-develop-your-hypnotic-voice
