I am fine with anyone. I truly don't care about religion. What I care about is if you're capable of being a good human being.
and the ads for this thread are hilarious for those of you who don't have them. Anyone want a single Muslim?
-
Nope, I've got halfhourmeal, america.gov, jesus2020, gnmagazine. No matter gow I refresh the page

I think the moderate priests have a lot more to do in today's world, in debunking the teachings of extreme ones

Another religion of man. Islam does find it's roots in the God of Abraham but it has fallen far from the principles of the Creator. Most of Christiandoom too has fallen far from those principles. To be honest there is no religion that truly represents God since each has men involved. But Islam does not worship the one true God.
-
But the truth of the matter is not every religion worships GOD and that is the difference. For Muslims, their God just happens to be a man. For Christians it's a spirit. I don't think that Muslims are bad people. They just have their belief like everyone else. Like adamgt said, they are not bad people. I personally know people who are Muslim and they go out of their way to help anyone whether that person is Muslim or not. You can't take one bad Muslim and hold all the followers of entire religion responsable. That person didn't commit an act of crime because they were Muslim.

James Baldwin wrote, “if a concept of God has any validity or any use, it can only be to make us larger, freer, and more loving. If God cannot do this, then it is time we got rid of him.”
And that pretty much sums up my view on Islam and all other belief systems and ideologies: if it makes you more compassionate and loving, I'm all for it. If it makes you judgemental and hateful, I'm against it. -
I have nothing against islam, just those individuals who twist religion to justify violence, intolerance and opression.
-
whoever i have met, many of them thinks that ISLAM is all based on violence...its been spread on the edge of sword...but its totally wrong..ISLAM is all about loving and worshiping the almighty..following the teaching of great Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W) and Sher-E-Khuda Imam Ali (A.S)..patience of Imam Hussain (A.S)...
whoever takes the help of guns and swords for jihad and tablik are not Islami...Islam dont allow this and Allah wont forgive them... -
Look, I've worked with, gone to school with and have had many Muslim friends and they are great. 99% of them are just average folks with families trying to make ends meet, they're totally against violence.
Unfortunately, the 1% that make the trouble, create so much havoc that they tend to drown out the good reputation that the 99% deserve.
Also with the kindest intentions I advise that Muslim's stand up and protest when there is violence. I don't see that. I see protest only when people mock your religion.
Who knows, maybe its the media. -
I don’t know much about Islam. Mostly what I’ve seen in the media, which is not the best way to understand. Even so, I have an argument with Islam. Why are women treated differently then men? Perhaps that is wise, but since I think women are smarter then men, it is a waste of human resources. I believe if humanity put women in charge of everything we’d have a better world.
-
Very good question, very common too... The status of the Muslim woman in Islam is a very noble & lofty one, and her effect is very great in the life of every Muslim. Indeed, the Muslim woman is the initial teacher in the building of a righteous society.
I will give you a small story, a man came to the Prophet and said: O Messenger of God! Who from amongst mankind warrants the best companionship from me? He replied: "YOUR MOTHER." The man asked: Then who? So he replied: "YOUR MOTHER." The man then asked: Then who? So the Prophet replied again: "YOUR MOTHER." The man then asked: Then who? So he replied: "Then your father."
Also majority of the people converting to Islam is women. So there must be something that's attracting them.
Have a good weekend!

The word Islam comes from two meanings "Peace" & "Submission". So Islam is to submit yourself to God by believing in ONE God with ascribing any partners to Him.
Muslim is the one who believes in one God, his messages through Prophets like Moses, Abraham, Noah, Jesus and Muhammed. Peace be upon them all.
-
I have nothing against "Islam", I just don't agree with some of their rules and restrictions towards women!
Other then that, it's a beautiful religion.-
Very good point but I would like to add my 2 cent to it. Islam liberated women I think 1400 years ago. At that time in Europe, Christian scholars were debating whether women had souls, if yes, did they have animal souls or human souls? Until recently women were stripped of their last names to illustrate that they were the property of their husbands.
As for Islam, women are equal to men in all acts of piety, they keep their last names, they are allowed to keep their own money, choose who they want to marry, have the right to seek a divorce, have the right to inheritance and have the right to be protected and maintained by their husbands. They have been dignified and exonerated by the Hijab (Islamic dressing).
In the West, women are portrayed as sex objects to be used and discarded. We see them being used to sell cars, alcohol and even bubble gum.
In Islam, women have been elevated to a stature that surpasses the roles placed upon them by any religion or culture. Women are not to be abused or oppressed but they are to be respected and cared for. As a result, Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world amongst women.
Hope this answers your questions, a lot of the time we judge Islam by seeing the bad Muslims. We should judge Islam by it's teachings and text, cos as you can see we Muslims are very bad representatives of Islam
Unfortunately.

There seems to be a misconception and a media hyped notion that all muslims are terrorists and its simply not true, the majority of them are noraml people that just want to practice there religion in peace and its the mindless moronic retarded jihad terrorists that kill innocent people that ruin it for them. I love my fellow britains wether they are muslims, jews, pakistanis, hindu, asian or blue martians, my only concern is that my goverment seems to put the british people to one side to cater for the immigrant population, and it saddens me that the government are promoting indian festivals such as divali, but neglect our own st georges day. I also feel the governments policy on immigration is pathetic, it is time to close the door, and just take a deep breath and look at the mess our country is in, and that does not mean because of minorities, it means the 3.4 billion the taxpayer has paid to keep foreign criminals in our prisons instead of deporting them, and the fact that our borders are open to anyone that wishes to come in, i'm sorry but you cant run a country that way, since religion began there is always someone out there that disagrees with other religions to the point of violence, we did it with the knights templar who killed on the belief of religion, the french did it with the dauphin, and romans, and also the taliban, and if you have a country that has no effective means of checking visitors then you are asking for trouble, hence why we have so many illegal immigrants. I just wish that my country was safe for british, muslims and all other races that live, work and pay the same taxes as i do, not the illegal money grabbing 'lets go to britain to get money' population that are sapping this country dry. We have enough layabouts of our own without other countries adding to it. but yes muslims are my friends just as much as a white british person is, and I would stand by them in a fight just as much.
-
I disagree that the west view women as sex objects thats just absurd, men have a strong sexual attraction to women because thats what we are genetically programmed for, so to say that the west treats women as sex objects is wrong, i and millions of other westerners treat and love there women and have a healthy sexual appetite for them, which is nature i'm afraid religion doesn't cover basic human behaviour.
-
Valid point but I would say Islam does identify the natural inclination of companionship, sexual apatite of both genders and it provides a solution that is good for the society as a whole, which is marriage.
Sorry I mentioned west treats women as sex objects, I should of rephrased and said some society, I will give you an example when you go out tomorrow, notice the advertising banners on buses, bus stops and billboards, distinguish how many of them has women and how many has men and compare their clothing. -
Adam, western society most definitely considers women as sex objects first and humans second. Women sell their bodies to satisfy "normal sexual appetites", and also as objects to sell other objects. That is why western women care so much about clothing, hair, bodies, and makeup - our economic status depends on being sexy and attractive.
Note these are generalizations that may not apply in some specific cases.
-
-
There's nothing wrong with an "attractive woman" however, it's not only the media that portrays women in different ways. In today's society, women feel more free of themselves, they feel that they as an individual have a right, an opinion, something of their own.
Indeed, on advertisment's women are more likley to be on the cover or selling the item. Though, it's not like it's harming anyone. Both genders are appealing and used on ad's to sell products.
So, you're saying, muslim women can't advertise?
Also, the clothing vary from the types of ad's they are promoting! I'm not saying I agree with some of the ads women are placing themselves in, though women are indeed attractive and some of them use that to their power.-
I am not a expert at this but as far as I know Muslim women/men can be used in advertisements, however they have to maintain their modesty in speech, dress and behaviour.
This is good for the society as a whole. Then everyone including men and women will be treated and respected for their character, their knowledge and not because of their physical attractiveness, which is corrupting the mind of young girls in the west, who seems to think she must look/dress/talk like a celebrity.
Correct me if I don't make sense, thanks.

adamgt...
I know more than a few Muslim women who have freely worn a hijab, whose parents are not practicing Muslims. It's not about oppression in ALL cases and wearing it in a lot of cases isn't a restriction of their freedom. Some women exercise their freedom by choosing to wear a hijab / burqa.
As silly as it sounds... when a woman is covering up her feminine charms it forces you to concentrate on something other than her body. That's how I hope men will treat my daughter when she grows up. -
Some questions
Why ONE god, why not partners? What do you mean by partners? And what is the logic behind ONE-
Logic is you have to believe in One God without any association. So you pray to Him only, no Saints, Prophets intercessor. Because only the one creator has the right to be worshipped, after He created you.
--------
Reference from Quran chapter 112:
"He is God, (the) One.
The Self-Sufficient Master, Whom all creatures need, He neither eats nor drinks.
He begets not, nor was He begotten;
And there is none co-equal or comparable unto Him."

Islam is "rohmatan lil a'lamiin" great giving from god, it's i mean " the end of religi in human in the world it's making peace forever. If some body making destroyer that is not "islam" he is "a people" they not understanding "full" learn of islam , in there 3 learn to be use of living.
1. Syari'at : this is learning from mohhamad s.a.w how to live in the world (how to inside to islam, why to wudlu (holly with water), sholat 5 time, syiam (not eat in month ramadhan) , and haji (ways go to makkah in final syari'at)) and respect to others and use al'quran to live and living in the world, use one of 4 mazhab syafi'i, hanafi, hambali, maliki

BC discussions about God or Christianity usually bring a lot of lively (and derogatory) commentary from those who don’t believe in such things. However, with a discussion on Islam…these voices are oddly quiet. Why? I think there is a fear the fatwa. This is not limited to BC. Here is a news story that caught my eye about a new movie coming out...2012:
“Roland Emmerich has admitted that he feared a fatwa would be placed on him if he filmed a scrapped scene for 2012. The filmmaker is well known for decimating famed landmarks on movies including The Day After Tomorrow and Independence Day. He stated that while he decided to destroy the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro because he is "against organised religion", he was fearful of the Islamic religious decree for a sequence that was planned but not shot.”
www.digitalspy.com/movies/news/a184886/emmerich-feared-fatwa-for-2012-scene...
Is this caution justified?-
You have to realise majority of the people don't practice their religion, including Muslims. But when a criticism comes towards them, they all suddenly feel offended and jumps on the bandwagon to create havoc.
In reality the scholars of Islam don't bother with fatwas, Fatwa is a ruling on a point of Islamic law that is given by a recognized authority. Fatwa does not mean contract to assassinate.

1) I can admit I haven't read one word in the Koran so I can't say what muslims as a whole believe,or if their is any such thing is if there is "muslims as a whole".
I've heard the words sunni, sheite, nation of islam, bathist, hamas,al queta,taliban...now I know that doesn't mean MUSLIM,but I do know all those groups mentioned above are muslims.
I don't know what each specific belifs are? I do know that some of these groups are responsible for wanting people who don't believe what they believe should DIE. I can't differenciate which groups are for living peaceful and which believe the west is evil,so I'm leary of who or what to believe.-
M again taking this point that Groups are just made to rule...its all a policy...Prophet Mohammad never spoke about group or division of Islam or muslims...Its all for the power...Prophet Mohammad just thought and spoke of one Allah or GOD...Quran dont speak of any specific group...
There is no restriction for women in Islam...There is no such rule that women should wear burkha and men should wear kurta and pyjamas and keep the beard....people just follow Prophet Mohammad's way...he use to wear kurta and pyjama and kept the beard....and burkha used by his wife...he never said to follow those things...he just asked to believe and prase the one lord.... -
I love your brutal honesty, wish there was more people like you!
As for your questions, Islam existed for a very long time, since then we got divided for many reasons. So it's hard to brand every Muslim under one banner, however majority of Muslims are Sunni.
The scholars from Saudi Arabia universities does not consider Nation of Islam as they do not believe in the Prophet Muhammed but a man from America who claim all white people are devils, which contradicts Islam because Islam has no colour or race, everyone is equal.
Rest of the names you mentioned are extremist political groups (who uses Islam as a brand) and not sects of Islam. They say and do things for their own personal benefit, very ignorant people. -
@There is no restriction for women in Islam. There is no such rule that women should wear burkha
Your words sound good, but it does not play out in the practical, real world. Surely you must have heard of the legend of the girl in burkha changing to western clothes in the toilet of a plane, the moment it leaves the country? -
Just because Islam advices something does not mean all Muslims are competent to follow it, some believers have better understanding and love of the commandments.
I am aware of people who used to practise Islam when they were young, then stopped. It's common, but what is also common is for people like myself who grew up knowing nothing about Islam then come to love it and doing my upmost best to follow it.
So it works both ways, I guess. -
@crazytsu, i totally agree with ur point...but the thing is the women is been forced to wear the burkha in Arab and other such countries...which let women to do this...very few of them uses it on their own wil...it isn't the case in India and other asian countries...here in India, women is never forced to wear it...Its all their wish..
About those countries who forces women to do this are just afraid of women's success...they cant take women to be superior then men...There is nothing do with Islam in such case..

it is possible to take anything, extract the values and then use it for our benefit. With Islam or anything else, this is very important, to see the good and forget anything that we consider as not useful and then grow in compassion and love
-
Honestly, I find it very odd that a ritual like bowing to Mecca seven times a day would be a central part of a religious philosophy. Also, what the name means ("Submission") seems a bit pointless to me.
The theology reminds me of some very bad Star Trek episodes. The people, however, are wonderful - smart, honorable, warm, loving, hard-working... We have a lot of Muslim students at Tech and many of them are very good friends of mine and among my best friends.-
I think in the case of the five time a day prayer it is to remind them of their faith on a regular basis. It is a form of discipline, just like training at the gym a certain amount or eating at regular intervals (or blog posting). In the Christian monastic orders the entire day is organized around a schedule of prayers, these can be ten times a day or more. Not my cup of tea mind you, but fairly harmless stuff. It seems to give them spiritual fulfillment. Such prayer rituals are equally common in Buddhism and Hinduism.
-
Very good point. The thing is Muslims pray 5 times a day towards the city of Mecca because it's to do with UNITY. Like as a Muslim I can go anywhere in the world and still know which way people are going to pray.
"And to God belong the east and the west, so wherever you turn yourselves or your faces there is the Face of God (and He is High above, over His Throne)." Koran 2:115
-
There are as many branches of Islam as there are of Christianity. Each has its extremists, unfortunately the extremist branch of Islam has grown in the the last thirty years or so and it is up to the majority of good peace loving muslims to win the hearts of these people for love and moderation and turn them away from hate and violence. It is sad but the majority of violence by these fanatics is inflicted on other muslims.
-
There are similarities between Christianity and Islam. I am Christian and my thought about Islam, Muslims in particular has changed when I got a chance to know one of them.
As long as it does not do any harm to others there is nothing wrong and I am not against with what the Muslims practice.
Let us just respect one another. -
I have also studied many religions but do not adhere to any. I really like the creation story in the Quran. It is easy to understand and makes lots of sense. However, there are, as a previous poster put it, some gaping holes in the Quran's believability. One is that it constantly basically says, "You'd better believe what I've written b/c it's the truth. It's not a lie." That constant goading just sounds like a lack of authority.
As far as terrorism, I think that extremists are perverting the message, and I have no ill will toward non-extremist muslims. -
Another thing that I don't understand, killing women who defame the family name. There is no denying it. There were a set of twins I used to go to school with. At the age of 15 they were forced to go back to palestine. Their familiy thought they were becoming too western. I will never forget their last day. We all cried all day long.
Also my aunts ex had 5 kids he brought his 2 sons with him,but said he will NEVER allow his girls over here. I don't understand their reasoning.-
It's a very bad culture practised by many Arabs and few Asian countries. Islam takes a stand against culture as cultures can divide us, where as religions brings us together.
Like the similarities of Christianity, Judaism with Islam. God refers them as "People of the Book" in the Quran, because Jesus & Moses (Peace be upon them) was given books too. Also Jesus used to bow down and prostrate to seek God's assistant just like the Muslims.
-
See what I mean...I was told above that islam was the culture of being muslim, but now you say being arabic is the culture...see why soo many are confused
-
There isn't ny such thing which can tell that being arabic is the culture...its just the place where "arabic" the language used in Quran is spoken....Its just that Quran was written in Arab and Prophet Mohammad belongs to Madina, which is in Arab...We live in India and we are muslim..we can read Quran in arabic and even it is available in every language which is spoken all around the globe....Its been thought to us that one muslim has to learn arabic...i dont think so it is much important, atleast for them who are unable to reach any arabic teacher....
I can tell u that Bible is available in Hindi(the national language of India), Gujarati, malyalam, etc.....Can this different languages change the actual meaning of Bible or what written in it??? No...
