Algeria: Carry a Bible, Go to Jail

While many of the cultural battles centered on religion in the U.S. involve legal positioning on church and state issues, very real physical persecution of faith exists in many other parts of the world.

A few websites monitor and report on these atrocities, many of which go with little mention or unreported in the mainstream media. Two sites whose mission includes reporting on religious persecution are Compass Direct News and Persecution Blog

Here’s a recent example of persecution. This from Compass Direct News:

ALGIERS, Algeria, May 9 – An Algerian Christian detained five days for carrying a Bible and personal Bible study books was handed a 300-euro (US$460) fine and a one-year suspended prison sentence last week, an Algerian church leader said...

    That's terrible. As a muslim myself, I feel very sad that the religion is exploited by such narrow-minded people (or government).

    Hi Alex,

    I think it is devastating for religious freedom in that part of the world.
    In my opinion, there must be a continuing dialogue between the Christian leaders and the government to spell out what is punishable or not. It is a very sensitive issue if it involves their own people. However, for expatriates like me, or foreigners for that matter, it is always good or safe to respect the country's tradition.       Thank you! Not sure one needs to be aware or be "good and safe to respect" any rules regarding CARRYING A BOOK!

      That my friend is about sane versus insane!

      Regardless, I understand your point about respecting (the sane) rules of a country.

    You know, it is stories like that that make me feel pretty small. I spend my day worrying about a lot of things....carrying a Bible is not one of them!

    I am grateful we can still carry our bibles here in the US without such fear of being fined and/or placed in jail.

    Sadly, Christians in the US fall prey to false imprisonment by the liberal agenda and those who have bigoted views against Jesus and those who believe He is the Son of God. What does this look like? We say nothing instead of standing up for our faith when the opportunity arises.

    I am grateful for freedom in the natural and in the spirit.
