Bloggers Unite

I've seen three different threads for today's initiative and I think it's better that we collect our links in one only thread... Or we'll find a thousand of new ones!

Please put your link here.

  27. 13 years is too long: Free Daw Suu now!

On 24 October, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will mark her 13th year in detention. Yet, she remains committed to a peaceful, political solution that is needed now more than ever for the people of Burma. It is imperative that Burma’s neighbors and allies such China, India and ASEAN renew and strengthen efforts to secure the immediate and unconditional release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her colleagues. As the Burmese military junta’s gross mismanagement and oppression further entrenches Burma as a failed state, it is in the region’s interests that durable solutions are achieved.

  36. In the discussion of the new president and the future of Iraq, we can't forget the massive refugee crisis we've created there:

    griperblade.blogspot.com/2008/11/remember-iraqi-refugees.html
    1. Hmmmmm, using refugees to make a political statment?

      Show me Bush involvment here:

DAMASCUS, Syria, - Abdulkhalek Sharif Nuaman likes to talk as he works, removing bubbly Iraqi bread from his ovens on long pallets. The baker is a cheerful man, yet his florid face darkens as he explains why he decided to flee Iraq.

Two months ago, Mr. Nuaman says, he was both a member of Iraq's small Mandaean sect, and a patriot with high hopes for the country's democratic future. Then Islamist extremists began attacking Christians in his Baghdad neighborhood, and his 9-year-old son was kidnapped, dragged into a moving car as he played near the family home.

After relatives scraped together $5,000 to ransom the boy, the family decided enough was enough and left, driving across the desert into Syria to apply for refugee status.

      source: www.genocidewatch.org/IraqManyChristiansFlee5august2004.htm

You backed into a timid plea for refugees so bad, I can still hear the reverse horn.
    2. Show me Bush involvment here

Are you serious? There wouldn't be an Iraqi refugee crisis if there weren't an invasion.

You can accuse me of "politicizing" refugees all you want, but if the worldwide problem of refugees isn't a political issue, I don't know what is -- it's something nations will have to work to solve, which means governments, which means politics. It's a 100% political issue.

Saying otherwise is as silly as accusing people of "politicizing war." War is political in nature. Refugees of war are political in nature.
    3. I'm dead serious...you didn't even mention refugees until more than half way through the post.

What part of "Islamist extremists began attacking Christians" includes Bush?
    4. I'm dead serious...you didn't even mention refugees until more than half way through the post.

Well, other than the freakin' title.

What part of "Islamist extremists began attacking Christians" includes Bush?

The part where it didn't happen before we invaded. The part where the invasion of Iraq is the traceable cause to all the instability in Iraq. Isn't "personal responsibility" a conservative mantra? Well, here you go. Everyone who thought invading Iraq was just the best goldanged idea anyone ever had, you're responsible for this. Now, what are you going to do about it?

Besides, what makes you think Muslim on Christian violence is the be-all and end-all of the Iraqi refugee crisis? Not everything's all about Christians, you know.
    5. instability in Iraq

WMD may have been trumped up by not only Bush but several foreign governments. War strategy may have been faulty. Forget the war for a moment.

What part of Saddam Hussein and instability in Iraq don't you understand?
    6. What part of Saddam Hussein and instability in Iraq don't you understand?

Seriously, I'm having a hard time believing that you're not joking. There weren't armed militias running around killing the hated ethnicities, there weren't suicide bombings.

Like they say, everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but no one's entitled to their own facts. Just accept the fact -- the undeniable fact -- that the invasion resulted in an epic refugee crisis. Since causing this crisis, we've done very little to mitigate it. In fact, at a time that countries like Iran are dealing with a problem we created for them, we're busy trying to undermine them. Think Iran has got its fingers in Iraq for no reason? They want to see this thing over, so they can get a handle on cross-border refugees. In fact, helping them deal with the problem would solve a lot of other ones we have.

But Iran is "evil," so -- like the pigheaded morons they are -- the current administration won't deal with them. Not even when it's in our own best interests and when it could help relieve the refugee crisis we've created. Better that millions of Iraqis suffer than to sit down and be freakin' grownups with Iran.

This administration has been a massive failure, the reverberations of which are being felt around the globe. They can't get the hell out the White House fast enough to suit me. I'm sick to death of idiots who have the maturity of ten-year-olds thinking they have every right to micromanage the entire world.

You can go ahead and blame this current refugee crisis on the dead Saddam Hussein, but don't expect anyone to do anything but laugh at you.
    7. I'm not worried about anyone laughing at me because that's often part of the deal when it comes to truth.

There were Saddam endorsed mass killings, Saddam sponsored suicide bombings, and 16 U.N. resolutions broken by Saddam...and you want to hang your hate on Bush?

Certainly war is not as clean and tidy as hawks would have you believe...but you can find countless Iraquis thankful for U.S. intervention.

You made much more of a political statement then a plea for refugees.
