Everywhere you go just about every retailer/media outlet seem to tout ways to be green. Home Depot, Lowes, Ikea, HGTV, you just can't get away from it. Obviously Earth Day is coming up but it seems to be larger than that. Thinking back 10 years ago, it never got this type of coverage.
What do you think finally propelled green living mainstream?
Are retailers driven by economics or social responsibility?

I think initially a lot of retailers are doing it for PR/Marketing reasons (aka economics), but there is always an element of social responsibility for some percentage of them - whether it is just a small number of people on their 'team' that feel strongly about it and have helped implement programs or whether it comes from the top.
It isn't such a bad thing. whatever the motivation, it has certainly become the trendy thing to be green. no one wants to be left out or god forbid appear NOT green!
The net result is a change in our cultural perception of 'eco' and a deepening of our understanding of how to change things not just for today, but for tomorrow.
You don't have to be chopping wood and carrying water, have hairy legs and wear birkenstocks to be eco-friendly anymore. You can be an average individual who makes minor, but regular changes that can have a larger impact when it all gets added up in the end.
Great thought-provoking questions! -
I have to agree that I think a lot of it is PR/Marketing; but at least it's a positive for all involved. I think a lot of companies are feeling pressure from their customers & competitors to go green and advertise that they are so. It's at a point where consumers are becoming very aware and very knowledgeable about products and how they affect our lives/environment, and it's detrimental to a retailer to ignore them.

Today, we often say our Earth is sick because of the serious pollution: air pollution, land pollution, water pollution and noise pollution. Because people have destroyed the environment and now we have to face serious problems like acid rain. What can we do to save our Earth?
Moreover, people should learn how to love nature first in order to stop polluting the Earth.

We need action now, not only rhetoric. Do some real thing, like using CFL and green products in our house.

The retail stores are simply doing it for profit. Who started it?
The answer is Anastasia in Russia - Millions of Russians read the books written about her and many started moving out of the city and becoming more aware of nature.
