Hi,
I came across an interesting theory about religion. Even though the majority of us here are atheists, we all have to recognise that religion has been a massive influence for humanity. Ever culture on Earth, completely independent of each other, has created its own religions, with gods, resurrections, and miracles.
So, the theory is this: evolution. Ironic really. The theory is that the time in which the human mind seems to be particularly susceptible to religious belief was in the ages gone by in our existence of low-level technology and low-level scientific understanding. Now, as the science world has taken off in the last 100 years, our understanding of the world around us, even the stars above us, has increased exponentially. This has lead to questions like "How does the sun rise", that would previously be given a god to answer, being given perfectly logical explanations - the Earth rotates, creating the illusion that the Sun moves around us. As this sort of understanding has developed we have seen a major push towards what we now call Atheism - non-belief in a god, but trust in science.
So, what do you guys think. Is scientific understanding paving the way to the "evolutionary" decline of religions and the rise of atheists?
