Home Improvement

Hey folks,

I'm glad to see that we made it up to 26!(as of my writing this )

I have question for all of you or anyone just stopping by. What was your last home improvement experience? And how did it come out?

Did you do it or did you have it done for you? Would you do something like that again?

And did you learn anything from it that you would like to share?

  1. My husband and I had a new oak staircase installed in our home. I let the pros do the building because I wanted to make sure the stairs reached from one floor to the next, lol...building stairs is too technical for most diy-ers, don't you think?

Anyway, I opted to do the finishing work of stained treads and painted risers. So far, I have the treads stained and polyurethane and am waiting for a week or two to do the painting to make sure the polyurethane is absolutely dry.

It's been a messy job having the stairs out of commission for weeks at a time but well worth the finished product, imo.

I have pics at my site - www.remodelle.net
    1. Hi LePlusJeune,

I love that look - stained treads and painted risers. Good idea to leave the construction to the carpenters and do the staining/painting yourself. Stairs are much to difficult for any diy-er. They are not only carpentry, but a specialty. Staining and painting a diy-er can do.

Yes, it can be messy and it take some time to do it right, but it will be worth the wait - so go slow and take your time. You have a beautiful blog and I looking forward to the seeing the finished product.

      Thanks,
      Scott
  2. My last home experience project was building a set of steps. I have a pool in my yard that is approx. 150 feet from my house and down a hill. I built steps down to the pool. It was pretty much trial and error and I had never done that before. I did in sections, as time and money permitted. Treated wood is costly these days! When finished, I was pretty happy.
  3. I'm sure that you were happy. There is nothing like the feeling of satisfaction after completing a job, especially one that difficult. And you saved a lot of money as well. Nice job!

Anyone else have any similar experiences?
