How can anyone believe in the Bible?

Since I'm blogging the New Testament (bloggingthent.blogger.com) I'm wondering how people can take those stories as literal events? Have they really read them? And how do they explain things like this:

Matthew 2:8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search carefully for the Child; and when you have found Him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship Him." 9 After hearing the king, they went their way; and the star, which they had seen in the east, went on before them until it came and stood over the place where the Child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.

This seems to be quite a funny star! Let me get this right: The star appears and the Magi follow it to Jerusalem. But then it disappears (since the Magi have to ask Herod where the king got born) and then after Herod tells them, behold, the star is there again and now 'goes' on before them until they reached the house! So why didn't it immediately lead them to Bethlehem? Oh, wait, I think it maybe just have been a diversion to get the plot going and to create some drama ... And how does a star 'go on'? How can it stay over an exact house in order to single it out? It must have been hovering a meter above its roof? So it definitely wasn't a star (a star is a distant sun) ...

I can't understand how people can literally believe in such bad fiction writing.

  1. Great question.

First I would recommend doing some intense scripture studies on the word star. Go to www.blueletterbible.com and do a word study on the word "star", Greek, Hebrew, whatever comes up?

Then re read the section of scripture that you are quoting. The word search will take about 30 minutes, with cross references.

Also consider this. Herod played a vital role in prophecy within scripture, just as Judas did.

Something else worth studying is the word "wise or wisdom" in the case of the "three wise men". They also were just an extension of God's Will, plans and purposes.

    However:

Mat 2:5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, (interesting, it is written)

Mat 2:6 And thou Bethlehem, [in] the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. (interesting, also written, and foretold long before the birth of Christ)

So did the star take them to the city? And if so, how many houses were in the city? and which house was the baby Christ in (which stable?).

But most important is that the wise men had to be called by Herod, and that scene had to unfold. So until that took place, the wise men were without the revelation needed to find Christ (the exact house / stable).

Mat 2:7 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.

Mat 2:8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found [him], bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

They didn't know the exact house prior to being called by Herod. If they would have known, they may have told him. If they would have known, and then lied, that would not be God's Will, for God is not a God of lies. Wise men don't lie.

Mat 2:9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was,

Now the star stood over the exact place, house, stable, and not the entire city. The Herod meeting was over, and they had departed from Herod. So God gave them the revelation, the exact whereabouts of the chld Christ.

Mat 2:10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy (interesting that they rejoiced over a star)

Mat 2:11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

When they opened there treasures (this represents their hearts) and the gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh (these things have another meaning also being pure worship, praise, adoration) Go do a study the words gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Matt 2:12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

This is why they lacked the revelation prior to meeting with Herod.

Another great word study is the word dream. God gave them (revelation, insight)

Mat 2:13 ΒΆ And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

Interesting, why not a star, but rather the angel of the Lord?.....

(again do a word study on the word star).

Again God gave Joseph revelation, insight and a warning of things to come.

Conclusion. The three wise men were led to the city where the child was to be born, which also lined up with prophecy foretold long before that time.

However until the three wise men were to be called by Herod, God chose not to reveal the exact whereabouts (the exact house / stable) where the child was born at.

    Hope that helps.
    1. Hm, that doesn't really makes much sense to me ...

The BLB tells me that 'star' is in greek 'astarte' and that it only has one mean: star.

So how does that advance me?
  2. Star:

    "a star," Mat 2:2-10; 24:29; Mar 13:25; 1Cr 15:41; Rev 6:13; 8:10-12; 9:1; 12:1,4, isused metaphorically,

    (a) of Christ, as "the morning star," figurative of the approach of the day when He will appear as the "sun of righteousness," to govern the earth in peace, an event to be preceded by the rapture of the Church, Rev 2:28; 22:16, the promise of the former to the overcomer being suggestive of some special personal interest in Himself and His authority;

    (b) of the angels of the seven churches, Rev 1:16,20; 2:1; 3:1;

    (c) of certain false teachers, described as "wandering stars," Jud 1:13, as if the "stars," intended for light and guidance, became the means of deceit by irregular movements.

Getting you to perform word searches may not answer your immediate questions. However it will cause you to dig deeper into God's Word, past the wonders and questions, whereas the Holy Spirit can minister to you the Kingdom of God.

Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing (understanding) by the word of God.

The word of God is spirit, spiritual, yes written by men, but it is the Holy Spirit that is the author of the word of God.

The natural mind cannot receive the things of the spirit, or understand the word of God. The natural mind will fall short without the Holy Spirit and the anointing of God leading, guiding and teachings. The end result will be head knowledge, lack of faith, and a whole lot more questions.

I'm trying to encourage you to get past the questions, the wonder, the lack of faith, and find Christ, the Kingdom of God, Truth, and a wonderful real right in your face relationship with Christ, through the power of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Christ, and intimacy with God. The word of God, reading it, studying it, seeking, pondering it, will open that door. Seek and YOU WILL find. It is one of God's promises to all, including you.

You are focusing on a star. So I ask you, is that star a physical planet that moved, that they followed. Maybe. Or was it a spiritual manifestation, called a star. Regardless don't get stuck on that.

Angels are also referred to as stars, and there are many other meanings of the word star in scripture. Many times scripture speaks in symbolisms.

Rather than finding ways to question God, and God's existance. Allow the Holy Spirit to teach you, to open the scriptures to you, and reveal the mysteries of God, the Kingdom of God, and Kingdom Truths to you.

That's when things get exciting, and the spirit starts a stirring. When you hear His voice, or He opens your heart to His love, His peace, His compassion, His presence.

When Christ makes Himself known to you, as more than just words in a book.

I was once at the exact place where you are at too.

As you can see, in the above scriptures, there are many more meanings to the word star, an that is only part of them.

Seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened to you...
