As an owner of an ipod touch, a macbook, a pc, and soon an iphone, i'm getting a bit excitied about the launch of mobile me today.
Just curious though, if anyone using thos soon to be retired .mac has any feedback on whether the service is worth the money. Do you have any stories of when .mac has made your life easier?

I use .Mac for my private website (homepage.mac.com/markstoneman), and I also distribute some materials to my students via my iDisk, which I can put a password on, and which I change every semester. I also sometimes back up important documents there.
I don't use any of the other features, which seem aimed at people without much computer experience and in need of a web-based solution that is tied into their OS. Don't see the value in that. Keep in mind too that they began these services before the many web applications were up and running. Flickr didn't exist yet, for example.
For some time their storage limit was much too low, though they're increasing that. Seems they do understand what's happening on the web, but they've been reacting painfully slowly.
I began using .Mac back in fall 2001, so I'm using it right now out of habit more than anything else. Plus my wife might kill me if she she had to change her email address again.
By the way, universities usually have other systems such as Blackboard and WebCT, but they're a pain in the neck to use, because I have to set up something new each semester or when I move between schools.
Another thing: I used to find the connection to the iDisk painfully slow, and it still is via the Finder (or the Finder alternative I use, PathFinder), but a nice FTP application from Panic called Transmit (www.panic.com/transmit) lets me connect to my iDisk and navigate its hierarchy quickly. That makes using it really easy. -
i just posted a little bit about this @ schoonmultimedia.com/tech ....
i think its worth it. an automatic way to sync your pc, mac, and iphone... i'm not sure what it can/can't do with the touch.
only sheisty part is mozilla firefox/thunderbird are not supported for bookmarks/contacts... but outlook is (on the pc side. entourage IS NOT supported on the mac end)...
the idisk and back to my mac work just like with .mac... but now you have 20GB storage between your email and iDisk. and the iDisk WILL sync between computers... mac or pc. but no idisk on iphone, heh. -
The push technology between my iPhone and iMac make it worth it. The two letdowns for me are no bookmarks sync in the "cloud" and no push email for anything except me.com email.

I am aware the bookmarks sync in the cloud but the fact that I can't view them there means if I am on a different computer I would need to use a bookmarking service like ma.gnolia, etc., or my iPhone. Kind of a letdown for the same $99 they charged for .mac when you could view the bookmarks. I am on a Mac so the enterprise data plan wouldn't be a fit for my needs

Just got a message from Mobile Me (earlier .Mac) that might interest some of you nonmembers:
> MobileMe services are now available.

I have really mixed feelings about MobileMe. Like many, I signed up for a free iTools account way back when, and @mac.com became my primary business email. Then I was stuck with it, then they started to charge for dot.mac, and now years later, I'm STILL coughing up $$ year after year. They got me.
Cheap MobileMe discount opportunities DO exist tho: www.mac-mobile-me.com - so I at least get cut-throat discount pricing on Mobile Me activation / upgrades to take the financial pain out of an otherwise great set of web services.
