Taking Flack For What You Love

Quick Question: Do you guys ever find yourselves defending your hobby to people who love you? Do you have family that rolls their eyes when you brag about more "junk?"
If not, what did it take for them to take you seriously?
I bring this up because I had a family dinner a couple of nights ago and I brought up TreasureHunting.com. My family is into my internet and online pursuits, but they seemed shocked that there was actually an audience for the things Shaun and I do and write about. What's it going to take for them to finally get it? Have you folks ever run into this?

My mom and dad were very crafty, not junkers, but they didn't mind making toys from leftovers, samples and scrap wood. So I guess I kind of grew up that way. Mom was happy when she found I preferred second hand clothing as a teenager, saved her a lot of money. Most of my friends understand junk and appreciated curb found presents.
So I can't really tell if there's hope for your family. I think you have to experience a good find if that doesn't come from within you. My manager told me the other day her parents plucked a cute cabinet from the curb after their neighbours moved out. She was pleasantly surprised they did that, but they were possibly inspired by a job she did on a second hand cabinet. Maybe just showing them your treasures may help more than talking about them. -
I have a family friend who would not want anything that has ever been used by someone else. It's all got to be new.
Of course, she is also the first person to wear a dress once and then take it back to the store. (Irony, irony...
)
I just don't bring up the subject with her. And I guess after a while you sort of learn who is willing to appreciate what you appreciate (no matter what it is) and who isn't.
Astrid's right, perhaps seeing the goodies for themselves will help them to understand. -
With the things I collect no one says anything because they all know I recreate the pieces. My dad was a collector of All things .... because one day 'he might need it' (Bless him). He was the king of the curbside collectors. So everyone would say "there he goes again hoarding junk". But it was his hobby & he loved tinkering about in his garage. Some things he used for himself or family, other things he might give to someone (as in useful objects & they would be grateful), some things he just never got around to doing anything with. I guess, because it was his hobby nobody really hasselled him about it, except to joke around. But I have (since his passing) discoved a few little 'treasures' among all that 'junk'
Thanks dad.
