Modern Day Treasure Hunters

I'll be the first to admit, I'm guilty.

As SOON as I find something, I rush to the internet or my books to try to find out how much it's worth. Any number I get, I'm proud of.. and as soon as I start showing off my find I always end it with "..and it's worth $--!!"

I've figured out this is mainly just a way for me to justify loving my new, usually dirty, item to my friends and family members. Because to me, everything I find is invaluable... like my orange chair I mentioned in another topic - you couldn't pay me enough to part with it!

I tend to keep things... but when a friend was in trouble I ended up selling a composition Shirley Temple doll for several hundred dollars. I still miss it (it was one of my favorite little treasures). But it was worth it to me.

So my question is,... have you folks ever turned around and sold something you found whilst treasure hunting? Why? How much was it worth to you, and how much did you sell it for? Just curious...

  1. Sure! I always think about it, but I'm not a good trades person. It's somehow not in my blood. We keep most things or just give them away to friends if it makes them happy. I have some items on a Dutch auction site, but I hardly ever sell anything.

I have sold curb finds on the flea market... for flea market prices. But then I'm talking about shoes, clothing, housewares, plastic stuff. Still always a good laugh when it works.

I still haven't figuered out what that couch we found would do on the market.
If you haven't seen it read here: trashcollector.blogspot.com/2007/11/when-bf-moved-upstairs-two-years-ago.ht...
We should be able to make at least a couple of hundred with it, but every time we talk about it we decide it's just too nice to part with it.
My vintage sewing machine is worth some $$$, but I saw so many offered I'm not even bothered to try: trashcollector.blogspot.com/2007/04/sewing-machine.html
I have a limited edition glass etching and I saw a comparable one from the same artist on ebay for about a hundred dollars, but its frame was in a better condition than mine. I haven't even checked back if it actually sold and already more or less offered mine to internet friends in exchange for something 'nice'.
    1. That couch is AWESOME! Not my color, but the shape is totally my cup of tea! WELL DONE!!
    2. Thanks! The colour wasn't ours at all too, but come to think of it, it's what makes it different. I mean if it had been brown or so it would have looked maybe just ordinary... and now the BF wants to paint his walls in pale 'old' blue (i've collected enough curb found paint by now to get started) I think it's going to look quite awesome indeed.
  2. I have certain things I've thrifted that I know are worth way more than I paid for them. My favorite is a Roberta diCamerino vintage purse that I paid about $6 for because I just liked the look of it... and on Ebay, these things are going for upwards of $400!

I have a few guidebooks for other things that I do check. A particular artist from the 30s I like has a guidebook and his work occasionally turns up at thrifts.

I don't resell them though. I primarily buy things because I like them and think that I have a place for them.
    1. Yeeeeahh... I think I have a place for everything... my house has gotten bitter and my living space has gotten smaller!! I guess it's okay tho,... plenty of "conversation pieces" when you get to mi casa.
  3. I buy second hand items for the purpose of 'recreating' them. So I do my creaative work & then sell them. (I have examples of some of my recreated pieces on my blog) But I have come across pieces that are too good or possibly have value, to paint over. I can't bear to paint them & don't want to get rid of them either. So now I seem to be building up a collection of these things - mainly silverware & teapots. I'm not too sure what I'm going to end up doing but I like the idea of having a collection of something
