Suggestions on choosing a camera

I currently am using a Nikon D70 I have on loan from my Dad. I wish to get an SLR camera of my own. I was wondering if you all had suggestions. I like to photograph wildlife, animals, birds, flowers and do macro flowers, bees, insects. That would be the bulk of my photography.
I've done a lot of research and have some ideas in mind but wondering if anyone here has suggestions. Lens suggestions too.
Thanks!

I use an EOS 450D at the moment, and I chose another canon because my old 35mm was an EOS also. I prefer Canon to Nikon but both make good consumer and professional DSLR's, so if your going to stick with Nikon then look around for the one that best suits your price range (and if your dad has a nice collection of lenses, you could maybe save a few dollars on purchasing a DSLR body only).
I would not recomend cheaper brands like Pentax or Fuji, but thats just me. -
Thank you for your suggestions. I've been borrowing a Nikon lately but also hoped to borrow a spare camera from a friend to try out a few cameras before deciding. I have heard from other sources to stick with Canon or Nikon.

In australia you would write it off as a depriciatable business expense, (sorry about spelling). Im not familiar with how things work for you in the US, but i would be certain that you could get some sort of tax free deal. could save you a few dollars.

I'm using a Nikon D80 - would have liked to have gotten the D300 but price was a problem. I'm pretty happy with its performance and do a lot of macro work, generally shooting in aperture mode. Easy to use, menu is intuitive. I'd suggest going with a good quality lens - I got the 105mm micro and love it. You can check out some of my images at www.daveingram.ca

I was choosing lately between Nikon D5000, D70 and lower, also Canon 500D, 40D and at last bought Canon 500D. I wanted low noise, good video peerformance (compared to others), small weight.
First wanted Nikon for the colors and e.g tilt/swivel LCD... BUT - i've read a lot about the in camera sensors, and found Canon's better, also i have already a Canon 40D and 2 lenses thus now can use 500D as my backup and exchange some accesories.
Greetings
