There is a tendency in the church today to take communion, and thus partake in Christ's sacrifice, and emphasize all that Christ gave us without speaking a word about who He is. Perhaps, to understand who he is, first we should consider what is really His greatest sacrifice.

I'm a complete smartalec. That's why, when I heard people speak of Christ's death, I thought, what about all the other people who died for me? You know, the soldiers, the patriots, Marie Curie the physicist, the various saints who died, also, often crucified.

Then I came to this conclusion: the greatest sacrifice of his Christ was his life. He was way up there, entertained by angels, feasting sumptuously, honored, and continually in the prescence of his father, the most glorious, benevolent being who has ever or will ever be. I mean, folks, this is the kind of pampering you can't BUY on earth. He could've even had meaningful work there.

But instead, he came to Earth, to be tortured, disrespected, impoverished, put in fear, and in the end, abandoned by all those he loved and executed like a common crook (on a day and hour he knew from the day of his birth; such knowledge is a great burden in and of itself.) He was punished mercilessly for doing the right thing to spread God's love, wisdom, and vision of the future to all of the Earth and all the Earths people, and redeem us all, from death, from sin, and from despair and a poorly led life, to eternal life, glory, honor, a heart of gold, and a princehood of God. He willingly gave of himself, the deepest sacrifices, the greatest pains, the most horrendous labors he was entitled to avoid, and leaving behind all the glory and splendor that the Father had given him for so long, and became so forgiving that even Peter could be taken back after completely abandoning and denouncing him. He even gave us a Holy Spirit to make us capable where and when we were not and fix those aspects of our heart that had gone too far to be repaired by human ways and human attitude, and make us beautiful in the sight of Him, and in the sight of ourselves. His message, one of love, one of grace, and one of vision, and his wisdom perfect even according to many of those who don't believe in him.

See, people had forgotten that God even had love. They were stoning more then could be believed for even the most minor of offenses, then throwing their bodies in to garbage pits to be burned and their name discarded forever, they believed accursed from God. Grace didn't exist. The temple was a merciless burden that made money, made Pharisees rich, and took the last penny from the hungriest widow for its glorification. That bought and sold and found new ways to condemn the poor and weak.

Jesus could've stopped his fate. He could've rained fire from the skies at the people who were killing him. He could've abandoned the people who abandoned him. He could've disappeared, right to the lap of comfort, or made his skin impervious to the blow of a spear or a nail. He could've said, "Screw you Human Race!" and disappeared forever, leaving us all without his glory and message, and at the very least, Isreal to its, just, condemnation. In fact, he could condemn all of us, just as Babylonian mythology believed that all were condemned when they died, and for good reason. This was his right, and no one could hold it against him. But he loves every one of us so much that he would not even let Peter take a single ear off a single police officer, or remove from himself a single instant of his suffering, for the story had to be told, in its ugliest brutlest detail to show how much God cares for and desires each and every one of us. The world had to be shown, in the hardness of its' heart, who God really is and how much he loves his creation, YOU.

I wrote an essay on my blog about this. please check it out.....
http://www.andras-nagy.com/wordpress/?p=425

"..My friends have a small boy, aged 6. When his grandfather died his parents chose not to tell him what had happened. Somehow the old man’s death was shunned. It was not something they talked about. It remained a mystery surrounded with scary images and the unknown. Sadly, this is how we approach death in the West. The little boy kept asking about “Tata” and he never got any real answer. He must have missed the old guy, I know, I did. I think an explaination would have been in place...."

"...The reality is that people in the western world walk around with the insurmountable weight on their shoulders, Death. As soon as we are born into this world we are dying. Kids should know that death and birth is a transition like sleeping and waking is, in fact the cycle of life repeats itself in a macro sense as well in the micro sense. But they remain in ignorance, they are kept there. Our materialistic and nihilistic consumer society needs this fear and ignorance. As long as we are in anxiety we are buying stuff, if not for cash, then for credit..."

"... Everything works perfectly in harmony and we should never be afraid to die. Fear is nothing but the ill use of our imagination..."

The Apostle Paul in Romans made it very clear that the 3 most important christian spiritual gifts were "Faith, Hope & Love." On the flip side, however, Christ does state at one point that "those who do my father's will shall inherit the Kingdom of Heaven" and the Epistle to the Hebrews uses (almost abuses) fire & brimstone imagery and eternal condemnations.

Many evangelical christians have taken that quote about "my fathers will" to mean that they should, essentially, make themselves vessels to whatever God orders. Traditional Protestants, on the other hand, and most Catholics tend to take a much more freedom oriented view of following the commandments and teachings of Christ and assuming that direct commands are a rare occasion and should not be specifically sought out. This distinction seems to be the main divide among protestant Christians.

What's your view? What's your complaints? Who do you think has it more on target?

"You may remember the story of how the devil and a friend of his were walking down the street, when they saw ahead of them a man stoop down and pick up something from the ground, look at it, and put it away in his pocket. The friend said to the devil, 'What did that man pick up?' 'He picked up a piece of the truth,' said the devil. 'That is a very bad business for you, then,' said his friend. 'Oh, not at all,' the devil replied, 'I am going to help him organize it.'
I maintain that truth is a pathless land, and you cannot approach it by any path whatsoever, by any religion, by any sect. That is my point of view, and I adhere to that absolutely and unconditionally. Truth, being limitless, unconditioned, unapproachable by any path whatsoever, cannot be organized; nor should any organization be formed to lead or coerce people along a particular path."

Leon Tolstoy, author of "War and Peace" and "The Death of Ivan Illyich" had a very interesting take on what it meant to love god:

"To love god is to love life."

He also believed that the meek indeed did inherit the earth as they, ironically enough, have more power over the course of history then the so-called leaders, who are merely carrying out the historic forces that common people create.

It is hard to cite for this as "War and Peace," where these sentiments are most communicated is a 1100-page book with very little fluff, but I don't think it should bother too many people, as in any case here it is the ideas that matter. In any case, what are your thoughts on Tolstoy?

Buddha was a Hindu, you see?
This is the most important fact to remember, also most movements and religions deteriorate after about 100-years. Even Buddhism managed to get segmented, and ritualistic without the majority of the followers having a clue of why and what the rituals are all about!
No exceptions! Christianity, Judaism or Islam are no better!
The fact to REMEMBER is that the mystics of these main religions tried to keep the old "gnosis" (knowledge) around and alive. The Jews, have the Kaballah, the Muslims the Sufi, Christians the Jesuits (who teach and are intellectuals), and so on...
There is a difference of prayer and meditation. In some cases, inner knowledge can be kept alive by meditation and service BUT never by preaching and church hierarchy.
No prophet was about starting a movement! EVER!

An argument from ignorance is a fallacious line of reasoning, that goes like this: Something is currently unexplained or insufficiently understood or explained, so it is not (or must not be) true. Because there appears to be a lack of evidence for one hypothesis, another chosen hypothesis is therefore considered proven.

So it would seem that the hypothesis that nothing divine exists readily meets the criteria for this fallacy, insofar as there is a lack of evidence for both the theistic and atheistic hypothesis. An atheist might argue that there is lack of evidence of religious hypotheses, but to conclude from this lack of evidence that nothing divine exists is, in fact, an argument from ignorance and therefore a logical fallacy.

Hi everyone, I've written several reviews of books by christian apologists where I go through chapter by chapter and critique their book. I've refuted such books as David Aikman's "Delusion of Disbelief" and Ray Comfort's "The Evidence Bible" and I'm always on the look out for anyone else who has written any kind of rebuttals to any of the hordes of apologetic material that's out there. Has anyone written anything, or come across anything? If so, I'd appreciate if you'd post it here.

Even though I've done my own research it's interesting to read other peoples' views of the same books and the ways they argue against them.

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing?
Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing?
Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God?"

One of the things I wonder about (due to many recent conversations) is how do CHristians know that the truth is the truth and not a trick?

For example - I have been taught that the prophecies and prophets in the bible and the bible itself is God breathed, and everything else - every teaching or type of current prophecy or prophecy or belief outside of what the bible teaches is a trick from Satan to get you to believe what Satan wants you to believe - so that you will turn from God.

But what if it's the other way around? What if the bible is a trick from Satan? What if Satan devised the ultamite trick, by impersonating God so much so that all of his worshippers believe that they are worshipping God but instead are worshipping false teachings?

How do you know? You can't quote the bible as evidence because if it is a trick then all leads are false leads, and all teachings are false teachings.

From what I understand, Satan is one sly devil in that he can get people to believe that they are following the true path by making things so believable - and even real or tangible so that you believe that it is the truth. Why is the bible exempt from such trickery?

Think about how many wars - and how much hatred has been spawned from the bible. If God wanted a peaceful society - wouldn't he have created a guideline that was clear, easy to follow, and hard to misinterpret? Why would God ask his followers to turn against things he has created? The only argument I can think of is that Satan created the biological differences that are so hotly debated and argued against in the bible.

But then that implies that Satan can create - which puts him on the same level of God.

So, have at it - how can you reasonably prove or know that you are following God's word, and not Satan's tricks?

According to wikipedia:
Lewis Wolpert argues that causal beliefs that emerged from tool use played a major role in the evolution of belief. The manufacture of complex tools requires creating a mental image of an object that does not exist naturally before actually making the artifact. Furthermore, one must understand how the tool would be used, which requires an understanding of causality.

Psychologist Matt J. Rossano argues that religion emerged after morality and built upon morality by expanding the social scrutiny of individual behavior to include supernatural agents. By including ever-watchful ancestors, spirits and gods in the social realm, humans discovered an effective strategy for restraining selfishness and building more cooperative groups. The adaptive value of religion would have enhanced group survival.

The earliest evidence of religion dates back to the Olduwan culture of H. erectus, so you really could say that it's a scientific fact that religion predates human beings!

So I have a weekly study with a local JW, right? We have awesome studies. I like learning about different religious perspectives, I enjoy it, and I've been learning a lot.

OK, the studies generally go as follows; She teaches, I listen, take notes, and ask questions. Very simple. It was determined from teh outset that this was a learning adventure, I made no bones about not converting to JWism, I also made it known that I was not studying to argue, but to learn their point of view. This is what made the studies awesome, because the boundaries were clear, and respect for ALL parties was shown.

So today, she had a friend from out of town come, and apparently this woman was pissed that I was a Pagan, and told her not to "bother" with me. WTF? We got into debates about evolution, creationism, religion, origins of, even cave men fer cryin' out loud. (She kept insisting that Babylon was around before Neanderthals and dinosaurs, etc...)

Now, I love having our studies...but this woman was way out of line. I made it clear from the moment I realized she was on the attack that I enjoy the studies, I read, learn, ask questions and RESPECT their beliefs. (the Guest, not the lady I usually study with, who had her head in her hands most of the time, like ohhhhh....noooo....)

But she would simply NOT return the favor.

Bitch.

Why, oh why do people behave that way? You'd think someone coming into a stranger's home, one who was halfway through the studies already, had a good relationship with the group would come storming in and be so incredibly disrespectful.

Your experiences?

I am firm believer that somewhere along the way Christianity got all screwed up. I feel it all started with the Apostle Paul and his Pauline doctrine.

I consider myself a Fideist. I believe in Christ based off of faith alone. I also believe that the right path to God is by following what Jesus Christ told us to do. Which was to follow the foot steps of his brother James. Who too was Jewish.

So my pondering is- in order for us so called Christians to get to heaven, do we need to convert to Judaism first? If so; how we go about doing that?

Hey people,

I am personally studying the causes and effects of modern day religion in society. I'm looking to get as many people as I can to answer the questions:

Do You Believe in a God or do You Have Any Similar Beliefs? and What Makes You Believe?

I'm asking this for research purposes of my second book. My first book called 'An Alternate History of Time and Space' is being published later this year by The Global Book Agency, New York.

In the second book I'm looking to answer the questions- What is religion and how does it work?

Your feedback would be great or a vote on the poll of my Blog would be even better.

Best regards,

The non-binding resolution on “Combating the Defamation of Religion” is intended to curtail speech that offends religion -- particularly Islam.

Pakistan and the Organization of the Islamic Conference introduced the measure to the U.N. Human Rights Council in 1999. It was amended to include religions other than Islam, and it has passed every year since.

In 2005, Yemen successfully brought a similar resolution before the General Assembly. Now the 192-nation Assembly is set to vote on it again.

The non-binding Resolution 62/145, which was adopted in 2007, says it “notes with deep concern the intensification of the campaign of defamation of religions and the ethnic and religious profiling of Muslim minorities in the aftermath of 11 September 2001.”

It “stresses the need to effectively combat defamation of all religions and incitement to religious hatred, against Islam and Muslims in particular.”

A lot of theists argue that without religion peoplehave no reason to be good and therefore would not be good...we all know this is nonsense so that's not the discussion I want...

What I want to discuss is why, if we do not believe in an afterlife or any kind of divine judgement/karma etc. do we behave in a way that doesn't necessarily benefit us?

Why aren't we all sneaky, nasty bastards out for whatever we can get? Why are we bothered about the state of the world and the way it will be long after we're dead?

So, let's talk about evolution!

Before we begin discussing this, please read this post in which PZ Myers summarizes the work of a physicist who uses estimates generously in favor of creationist arguments to show that evolution does not violate the second law of therodynamics.
