Community Leaders Unite to Tackle Obesity and Worksite Wellness in Houston

Mayor White Addresses City’s Health Care Issues

WHAT:
The results of the recent presidential election mean that change is on its way—a big issue being change in health care. This is just one reason why the Houston Wellness Association (HWA) is hosting the 2008 Wellness Symposium to help business, education, industry and policy leaders discuss the health issues surrounding obesity and worksite wellness. Local experts and community leaders will gather for a two-day event that aims to translate knowledge into collaborative action to enhance the health of the community. Scheduled to address the importance of preventative health care is Mayor Bill White. As part of the HWA Wellness Symposium Steering Committee, Mayor White feels strongly about wellness education and the impact that improved wellness can have on Houston businesses and citizens.

INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITIES: Get first-hand, one-on-one insight into Houston health care problems from those who know it best—community experts. Talk with concerned Houston residents and get their perspective on local obesity and worksite wellness issues

Molly Bray, PhD with Baylor College of Medicine; Christine Mei, Coca-Cola North America; Bill Klish, MD; Lovell Jones, PhD; Nancy Correa with the University of Texas; Health specialist Cynthia Nickerson; and/or Jonathan Lack, Executive Director of Houston Wellness Association to speak on any of the following:
• Obesity in the City of Houston
• Obesity and wellness programs in schools (specific pilot programs in HISD too)
• Treating/preventing obesity in minority children and communities
• Psychological challenges in weight loss and weight maintenance

WHAT ELSE:
The general public will receive free admission into the exhibit hall where several local companies will set up booths aimed at displaying their proactive approach to worksite wellness. Here the public will be allowed to explore the different booths and network with the symposium attendees. Exhibit times are 7am-7pm on Thursday, Nov. 13 and 7am-3pm on Friday, Nov. 14.
