Hello all, first let me say that I'm not a debater and until about a week ago I have never blogged. With all that has been going on here of lately, I just started writing down my gut feeling to keep from exploding.

I have just about lost faith that any politician is looking out for our best interest.

I am 57 years old and remember a time when children didn't have to be constantly protected from sicko's. When we didn't have to lock our doors in fear that someone would come in and murder us. A time when neighbor helped neighbor and their was no such thing as being politically correct. A time when parents didn't have to monitor what their children watched on television.

It seems to me that people with conservative moral values today are being looked upon as racist and freaks by a growing liberal movement.

What most concerns me are the two parties and their loyalist. Party bickering and finger pointing have stymied all hope that our so called brilliant representatives could ever agree on anything unless it benefits their party which ends up as a Mexican Standoff!

Peter Kreeft is one of my favorite authors. I love his logical-not necessarily scientific, but logical and deductive-approach to theology. In his book, “Between Heaven and Hell,” he writes:

“I’ve always thought liberal and conservative were terms not to think, but to avoid thinking. You can classify anything as liberal and conservative, then simply declare yourself one or the other, and all your thoughts for the rest of your life can be a knee jerk”

I really agreed with this eloquent statement. The fact is that people have what psychologists call a “mob mentality.” Basically, we loose our sense of self in favor of a communal identity when we gather into large groups. I feel that modern political parties steal the minds of the masses by winning their hearts.

I feel that this is the key-note to Obama’s success, and I note that it’s the same sort of tactics used by cults throughout history.

The shear hypocrisy of Republicans and Democrats seems incredibly obvious to me. Does anybody else agree?

Recently gay marriage became legal in California, and gays are getting a buzz from this “victory”. But like with all addictions, this buzz will only be temporary and more ground will be fought for in the future.

When I say “buzz” and “addictions” I’m referring to what I describe in my book (The Plague Of Liberalism) as a psychological disease that liberal activists suffer from: “Freedom Addiction”. That is, they don’t feel free so, like with all addictions where a stronger dose is sought when ultimate satisfaction isn’t achieved, they keep pushing to break the legal barriers that restrict in any way.

Unfortunately they are using and severely hurting this culture and natural maturing of young people in the process. And the other unfortunate part is that, like with all addictions, this psychodramatic charade will never give them the freedom that they crave. Only submitting their inner and outer lives to being in harmony with the observable, inherent designs in nature will. (And my many years of research and experimentation in many different approaches to lifestyle, problem solving, personal growth and truth, have concluded with being able to prove that the Bible contains an inerrant explanation of those designs.)

A key underlying question to this whole issue is: are gays born that way? According to the stand of the APA (American Psychiatric Association) before 1973, the answer is “No”. To see how they changed their position because of heavy intimidation and not science, that story is in my book, which you can see at www.ThePlagueOfLiberalism.com.

I'm interested in views on the position Clinton is taking on Obama. A group I was out with this week waved it aside as "he's running against his WIFE", but I think it's a bit more complex than that, and it's giving me cause for concern. I'm just not sure whether the concern is about Clinton or Obama.

Clinton isn't just endorsing his wife; he's placing himself in a position in which it would be difficult for him to credibly endorse Obama if he ends up the candidate in the general election. That surprises me, and opens up a number of possibilities, none of which I like: a willingness to sacrifice the ultimate outcome of the election on the chance of the Clintons getting what they want, a level of dishonesty I wouldn't have attributed to Clinton, or the possibility that Clinton legitimately doesn't view Obama as the candidate he looks like.

Last night at dinner, a friend of mine--one who has always been politically conservative--asked this question: "Has there ever been a great Republican President?"

I did my best to consider the question objectively and wasn't able to come up with any. Obviously, meaningful discussion of the issue requires a common understanding of the word "great", but if anyone has an affirmative answer, I'd be very interested to hear which one and why.

I just posted about a change to the law that, effective January 1st of 2008, will force Senators to wait two years and House Members to wait one year after leaving office before lobbying Congress.

http://blog.techfun.org/lott-to-slip-through-revolving-door

Senate Minority Whip and former Majority Leader Trent Lott will be announcing his resignation from the Senate today. Lott won re-election just last year and was slated to serve until 2012. Instead he is stepping down after serving less than a year of his current term. He was elected with 376,074 votes, or 63.6% of the electorate in the general election.

If he is indeed stepping down to take a lobbying position before the new law takes effect, what does this say about Congress members commitment to to the people who elected them?

I wonder how the people who contributed time and money to his campaign last year feel about all this. What would you do if your elected official acted like this?

So please, if you've taken the time to join this group and read this message, reply to this thread and introduce yourself.

Let me just say first that I've been annoyed by the use of the term "debate" being applied to the candidate showcases in which both major parties have been participating these months. They have not much in common with the sort of debating I learned in high school. (Of course that was about 100 years ago!)

That aside, I would be interested in hearing from anyone who was able to last through most or all of the ordeal. Who made the best showing? Who seemed to do the best job of actually answering the questions? Conversely, who was the worst evader, fence-straddler, flip-flopper? Whose performance may have hurt them most? Who lost, who gained?

By way of introduction this is a new experiment we're trying on Blog Catalog in the Political Debate group. After rockstories and I came up with such different interpretations of the title 'Will Ron Paul Get Zapped by the WOD Third Rail?', we thought it might be interesting to try posting a title and inviting anyone interested to blog on it. So for this week your title is

The Biggest Obstacle To Electing The Right Presidential Candidate

You can write anything you want, approach the topic however you see fit. The hope is that we will see many different ideas that will promote broad discussion. Post your response on your own blog and leave a link in the comments so we will all be able to go and read them and hopefully discuss them here.

I am thrilled to see that we now have 25 members in Skilled Political Debate. For those who are new, please don't be put off by the "skilled" thing. What this really means is that you have three monitors who are skilled in debate and can help move discussions along or point out problems with logic. All we really ask is that you talk about issues instead of of personalities and that you show courtesy to other participants. Which is how I'm sure you want to be treated too.

So go post a blog piece on The Biggest Obstacle To Eecting The Right Presidential Candidate and add your link to the thread.

Here on Blog Catalog we seem to have a very small but very vocal contingent or RP supporters. But since this is my primary online home, I really don't have any grasp on how Hot or Not RP is out there.

(No, I'm not talking about those alleged infidelities!)

With what seems in these early days like a solid possibility that either Barrack Obama or Hillary Rodham Clinton will capture the Democratic nomination, we may be looking at the first election in history that is clearly impacted by the race or sex of the candidate.

When either party chooses its candidate, electability is a key issue, and each of these candidates has an inherent characteristic that will undoubtedly be both a draw and a negative. How much will the issues of race and sex and the impact of those characteristics on voter attitudes impact the selection of the Democratic candidate? And will those issues work in favor of or against these candidates?
