Social Media

Okay guys... As you know, we're all about getting more traffic to our sites, right? And how do we do that? Well, I'm going to discuss many ways of increasing your traffic and ranking using SM (Social Media) over the next couple of days, or weeks. I call this SMM, or SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING.

Please note... 1. This is a discussion, not a tutorial. 2. let's remember that we're not discussing SEO (Search Engine Optimization)... we're talking SMM. Although SEO and SMM can, and will tie into one another...

Increase of traffic will improve rank. Improved Rank will increase traffic. So what's first, and why? It's like: What came first the chicken or the egg?
Rank: Technorati, Alexa, Compete

Here's what's on my plate for topics... This list will be updated to include several additional topics. Anyone have topics, please Speak!

1.) Social Media Memberships... activity is key. Why is it important to participate in several Social Media Sites? Activity builds validity and credibility. Validity and Credibility builds traffic. (more on this...)

2.) Technorati. Who are these guys and why the hell do I care? Technorati plays a big part (okay huge part) in the blogging world. What's authority, why do I need it?
*I'll discuss how to drastically improve your blog's ranking on technorati... instantly. OpenJason is currently in the low 100,000s... but a couple of weeks ago, I was at around a 350,000 ranking. I went from 350k to 70,000, now I've leveled out at 116,000 (+/-)... I foresee ranking under 100k (with stability) in the next week or so.

3.) Building backlinks... then exploited the newly create link(s) to improve authority.

4.).....

5.).....

Who's on board? Before I continue, can get a quick shout? .. just to make sure I'm not wasting my time, or yours! :0)

  1. I would ad that Building backlinks on other blogs is important for Technorati rank. More important than having fans, thought.
  2. your definitely not wasting your or our time. just keep talking... traffic building is always an interesting topic.
  3. i'm listening.
  4. I´ll take note....listening and ready for those big tips
  5. I'm in Would like to more about Technorati, end of Dec I was rank 104,933 authority 69, now I'm rank 51,019 and authority 124. Without much effort if any. Which of the two is more important?
  6. I started blogging to do some networking and build traffic for a dating website I am developing. I've backed off on the blogging since my technical writing and entrepreneurship writing does not seem to appeal to people who are interested in Online Dating... and I'm not capable of writing about dating or relationships - but I still love reading blogs. I don't think Technorati can help me drive traffic to my site in particular so I'm focusing on Stumble Upon and maybe the occasional article targeted for Digg or Reddit. BUT I'm not an expert, so I'm open to being convinced otherwise.
  7. I am on board.

  8. As expected, Technorati is hot topic... that's great.

"1.) Social Media Memberships... activity is key. Why is it important to participate in several Social Media Sites? Activity builds validity and credibility. Validity and Credibility builds traffic. (more on this...)"

As everyone knows, becoming part of a group or a member of a social media site can, and will drive traffic if done right. How much traffic? Well, that's up to you. This is what I've found to be important... ACTIVITY. Nobody truly knows how the algorithms of StumbleUpon, Digg, Mixx, or any other social site work. That's all obviously proprietary information….

If you do a little diggin', you'll see that the avid, highly active, or the highest rated users of these networks tend to hold more weight when it comes to bookmarking or tagging. They become the VIPs of the social media world.

Their hard work is beneficial in at least two ways:

First, their hard work and activity will naturally build traffic… simply because they’re active in the community, making new friends, etc. Common sense, right?

Second, they earn some credibility with the social site they’re using, therefore they get awarded with great placement and exposure, helping them earn more Diggs, or stumbles, etc. Every social network wants their users to use their network, and only their network… So, they give their VIPs a few perks, or incentives to be loyal and active.

Example: If you're a Digg user, you'll probably notice that it’s always the same people who get their articles on the front page … as well, it’s always the same people who receive the most diggs.

Now, I’m sure I’m not telling anyone anything they don’t already know… but this is a great starting point for our discussions. Besides, I have no clue who knows what... so we'll start at the ground floor. When you’re doing your networking or traffic building, keep this in mind as it plays a big roll, no matter the social network.

Let’s open this for discussion… The next piece is coming shortly after this post.

    TECHNORATI…..
  9. BTW - Lenzjo, that's excellent. Be sure to provide your input too!
  10. Technorati...

Time Square of the blogging world. Slightly convoluted and a bit weird to understand. At first it may seem like their ranking system is insignificant, irrelevant, and arbitrary.

    That’s not the case.

Technorati is important because it really measures the visibility and exposure of your blog. It measures this by your backlinks, and the ‘authority’ of the sites that are backlinking. The better the site, the better rank you’ll get…. sort of.

I say “sort of” because it’s not really just the rank of the blog that improves your authority and/or ranking. It’s the authority of a particular posting. For example, I could have a piss poor rank for my blog… But I might have a post that is really popular and lots of people link to it or copy it, creating a linkback to your blog. I’ve now build “authority” for the posting, and it’s quite likely that I’ll see some rank improvement…

That brings me to a question… What’s better?

A: To have 100 highly ranked blogs providing you backlinks?
    Or
B: To have 1000 no-so-highly ranked blogs providing backlinks?

I’ve found that having more blogs link to you is far better than the quality of the blog linking. This holds true for a few reasons. First, there’s tons of blogs, with tons of posts out there that Technorati doesn’t know about… So, when they get pinged for the post, it’s new content as far as Technorati is concerned, therefore, they’ll recognize that there’s a link pointing to your blog. On the flip side, you might have several links posted on the big-dawg blogs, but Technorati might just overlook your link because they don’t see the post on that blog as “new content.”

For example: I have several backlinks from Shoemoney… getting Technorati to notice it is frickin’ hard.

FAVS: Does this matter? … hmm….. good question. I’d say “yes,” it matters. How much does it matter? … hmmm…. Not sure. I tend to think that it doesn’t necessarily help with your ranking as much as it does your visibility. Technorati might, however, measure that “fav” link as another linking blog, giving your blog more authority, thus improving your rank. Let’s give it a shot and see what happens…

Right now, my ranking is at 114,765. I have only 6 fans. 2 weeks ago my ranking was somewhere around 350k.

Fave me and we’ll see what happens. technorati.com/faves/?add=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.openjason.com

Now I’ve covered the very rudimentary basics. Next, I’ll jump into tips and tools… How to increase and improve your ranking. I’ll give you some crazy tips and tools to get ‘er done!

Skeptical? I’ve befriended a couple of folks in this group. I’ve been able to drastically improve their technorati ranking, with very minimal effort… just ask around.
  11. Jason, you have been "faved" :-)
  12. You are opening up with vital and valuable information. More please.
