How do you feel about controversial animal rights org, PETA? Do you think they go too far with their messages or are they right on the money?

Is their a campaign of theirs that sticks out for you? Which? and Why?

  1. Hey Missy, I think they maybe sometimes go too far, but who am I to say. Just because someone or a group is more "hardcore" than I am doesn't mean they aren't right.

I did read a quote from an animal rights activist though that I, as a hardcore animal lover, found a little absurd. The quote said that the person felt that the life of an ant was as important as the life of his or her own child.

Now.. I love my animals and I love animals in general. I don't squash insects unless it's a 'them or me' situation... but I would never put an animal's life right up there with the same importance as my child. My pets are a close second, but still second place. And an ant crawling around outside.. well.. they are pretty far down on the list. That's just me.

I don't remember if the person was from PETA or not but I have heard quotes that I felt were equally absurd coming from PETA. But like I said, really to each their own. Just because I'm not quite as passionate about the life of an ant, doesn't mean that it's not important.

The only place I absolutely draw the line is violence. I don't understand how an activist for any issue can bomb or set fire in the name of their passion. Violence is never right and those are the only people that I would say that I absolutely have a problem with.
  2. Hmmn, the violence issue is more tricky because i think some activists use it as a means to stopping some types of animal cruelty.

Like for example, that guy who burned down several horse stables in several states because the horses were being brutally killed and tortured. This guy was sentenced to prison and i believe served 3 years for "his crime" but its like robin hood, who steals from the rich to give to the poor. He wanted to end what was going on in the stables and he did so through violence, but in that particular case it was the only effective means of putting an end to what was going on. Sometimes in certain cases, it has to be used.

Was he right? Did he commit a crime? Was there another way to solve this issue? Why were the horses being treated they way they were? What happended to the perpetrators of the horse crimes?

Sometimes our laws cannot answer certain questions.
  3. I had not heard about the horse stables. Were the horses killed in the fire?
  4. What I meant by violence really is something that hurts or kills people or animals. If there are no deaths or injuries to people or animals, to me it's not violence, just property damage. Which of course is illegal, but to me not a horrible crime, if like you said, it was to save the horses.
  5. I am a member of PETA and I will admit I do not agree with everything they do. I feel it is still good to support them though because they are doing great things for animal rights in general. One thing I remember thinking was weird was a campaign on fish abuse.. I didn't read into it but now I wish I had cuz I can't think of how people would abuse fish and it is bugging me lol.
    1. Personally I don't understand what the fun is of fishing for the sake of catching a fish and then throwing it back in the water. I think that's fish abuse.
  6. I tend to give money to the HSUS instead of PETA for one reason. HSUS doesn't send out mailings that show animals suffering. I know it is a hard reality and that they do suffer and something has to be done about it, but when I open a PETA mailing and there are all of these poor, abused dogs and other animals all over the writings in various stages of misery I feel a bit abused myself. It is like they are going for the shock value and there is something about that that is a total turn off to me. I support their work efforts and even the way they deal with perpetrators, but I don't like the methods they use to try to get your money. So, I tend to give mine to the HSUS. All I ever get from them are address labels and calendars that are a lot less painful to look at. That's just me. But then I can't even watch that show about animal rescues on Animal Planet for the same reason. It is just too painful to watch.
  7. im with you on that karen. i feel exactly the same way. the very first time i received a PETA mailing was the one that is the veg starter kit i requested it like 3 or 4 years ago, and at first it opens up and its telling you about recipes and what not, and then you turn the page, and whalopppp. the most disturbing animal images i've ever seen, haunting and very very sad. i still remember that mailing, because what was inside it was so unexpected.

i'm not agaisnt them, because they have done alot of good and sometimes if it werent for them taking those horrid pictures and images, how would many people (like you and me) even know or believe such things.

i think what they should do is really warn you and advise that graphic images are ahead, etc. atleast then it wont shock the heck out of us.
    1. I think a graphic warning is a good idea. At least that way you can brace yourself and decide whether or not to proceed.
  8. I personally don't like the in your face pictures...I understand what they are trying to achieve but some people who see this stuff already are and don't want to see it. It has totally turned me off PETA and visiting their site or other sites that do it.
  9. Yeah, I just got the veg starter kit about a month ago and I was horrified. I mean I had aleady seen images like that online, one reason why I decided to do it. But I was just expecting recipes and nutrition. Some of my toughest critics opened it while seeing it laying around and been like oh my god maybe I should do it, too. They didn't of course, but they thought about it. I haven't donated much to PETA, I usually give to the ASPCA.
  10. yeah I haven't got the veg starter kit because of that reason. Why show those images to those of us who are about to do the right thing? Doesn't make sense to me!
  11. I actually ordered several vegetarian starter kits from different organizations now, and they were all filled with those awful pics. It's not just PETA - that seems to be the best motivator. Thinking of those when you're about to eat, really works.
  12. I have hearing from a lot of bloggers that PETA kills animals and euthanizes them unnecessarily - does anyone know if there's any merit to these claims? I wrote to PETA personally but haven't heard back, it has been a few weeks now.
  13. I would say they wouldn't based on the fact that they are against this type of thing! It must be some group that is trying to make PETA look bad!
  14. It is the Anti-Peta brigade spreading this stuff around. They have done alot for animals worldwide, they are not perfect, but what organization is.
