Well, myself being a student and having access to our school bulletin board, I have found that when I post a 'teaser' of an interesting post with a useful link that I think other students would be interested in I immediately see many visitors coming in via the bulletin board.

Hi all
traffic generation and link building is the most difficult part of blogging.
I have a list of things which i follow while i create a new blog.
you can find it on this post

foreversky, Those were solid tips. All very decent ways to build traffic by reaching out and contributing something to blogosphere. My blog is a fiction blog: traffic will always be troublesome. Readers stay with me for one long serial and then fall off. Now I consider myself a die-hard reader. And I do the same thing when I find another fiction blog. Except for one or two, I follow for a while and then other demands take over.
I have two tips for other fiction bloggers. Post your stories in short episodes. More than 600 words is probably too much. And, while this isn't writerly, an interesting graphic leading into the post can lure readers into the first paragraph. -

Truthfully, the majority of my hits come from Wordpress searches. I try to keep my blog at the top of the page on a number of issues. Good tags help Wordpress members and followers easily find my posts. when I switched from blogspot to Wordpress my traffic tripled.
Stumbleupon ads have netted me some traffic. And of course BlogCatalog. -
for generate traffic, despite using Social Bookmarking, SEO, Blog commenting, article writing, forum posting, for monotized blog i use to click on their google ads and leave some messege on their shout box to visit our blog...i think this method is owsome, but remember click on the other page, in archive posts not in the main page, only one click and leave for several minutes before you close that ads..hope this will generate more traffic to your blog...visit my blog too..:)

Social networking, submitting articles to ezinearticles.com and blog carnivals, comments on other blogs and forums. These have worked for me so far.

The most important thing is Content is king. Try to write quality posts and most importantly submit in all possible blog directories like I have done.. Im getting very good traffic from blogcatalog and other blog directories like zimbio etc. Submitting articles to ezine and other article directories is also a great way to get targeted and quality traffic.
Even, Entrecard is also a great way to get huge traffic. Twitter is a great microblogging platform these days and people are using it effictively to drive huge traffic.
Lastly, try to update your blog everyday. This will make your readers bounce back to your blogs almost daily.
I tried all the above traffic generation tips in my blog and by God's grace I am making it over 1100+ visitors everyday.
You can even refer my blog for details. Feel free to ask me any question.

GREAT suggestions! I'm anxious to try some of 'em.
For me, it's always tough to balance time spent creating content versus promotion. I agree with the folks above who said that content is king. A lot of the time I've spent "promoting" could have been much more wisely spent creating. My balance right now is about 95% creation time vs. 5% promotion.
If you build it, they will come (hopefully).
Here are my 2 "blogs." The first is an employment law blog I do through work (about 300,000 visitors/year). The second is a Christian site I just started (2,000 visitors in the first 6 weeks). Enjoy!

This is a helpful thread from which I can learn from others. My methods include, blog submission, article submission, traffic exchanges, PPC, giving away free reports, mutual ad swaps, Web 2.0 and running an affiliate program. There's no one dominant method, but each and every way adds up to good effect.
To learn more about Web 2.0 traffic generation methods, please download a free report which I updated last week at www.internetmasterycenter.com/giveaways/websocial.html
Thank you. -

I've been finding Stumble Upon seems to generate a bit of traffic - wasn't a lot of hassle to set it up and I've managed just under 200 hits in a few days. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for an increase as I add more content. Pinging services seem to help also - pingoat.com in particular. Got a few tips here, going to put them to the test - especially lenablonsky's, which I'm sure anyone attempting it will find successful.

I find just getting out there into the blogging community (of bloggers who are writting about vaugly similar things as you) and interacting on their blogs (posting comments, adding links to those blogs you choose to follow/keep reading) is the best way to increase readers. I guess this way possibly doesn't increase traffic the most but it's the kind of traffic you want that probably also has a bearing in how you go about it. Quality over quantity of traffic anyday for me, but then I don't ever intend to put adverts on my blog or make money from it.

This is a great topic and there are some very useful tips shared here. Thanks a lot.
I am beginning learn about traffic generation and importance of being indexes properly in Google searches.
In addition to the tips given in this forum, I have used the following free traffic generation sites
BlogXplosion, LinkReferral, TrafficSwarm
I have just begun participating in BlogCatalog although I have been a member for a few months.
While content is king, follow the principle of Kaizen (continuous improvement) to improve your blog presentation as that makes a huge difference. The layout has to be tuned to where users are most likely look in your site for current and past content.
Its very important to have your meta tags done right so that people can find you in their searches. Also allow for robots to index and follow. In addition, watch out for your posts showing up as double entries in Google's searches whereby Google penalizes you by removing your search indexing.
I will be writing a blog shortly about these and will share here. -
