Writers and Writing

Welcome To All

Being a new group, it is a welcome message to all new members. (Moreover, seeing discussion section with the message 'no discussion found' doesn't look nice...)

As I feel madameX may be busy in the administrative and planning aspects for the activities within the group, may I have the honor of welcoming you all?

Feel free to introduce yourself, if need be.

  1. Hi, I am Meghna. First of all congratulations in forming this group for writers and writing.
Being new to the blogging world, I have to learn a lot. Hope my interest in creative writing may help in contributing a little to this newly formed group.
    1. meghna,it's wonderful finding you here.
  2. Hi! I'm April. I work as a freelance writer, editor and psychology transcriber. I have published in both print and online formats and enjoy writing everything from creative non-fiction to poetry. I look forward to exchanging ideas, tips and tricks, and resources for writers and writing.
  3. Thanks for getting this started, Megha. I got Tony's message this morning and set up the group and sent out a few invites, but then had to run off to a meeting and didn't have time to take it any further. I guess maybe I should have started at least one thread before I sent the invitations!

It's open house night at my daughter's school, so it will likely be tomorrow before I can really jump in, but I'm excited to see where this goes.
    1. Hi--

I've been busy with other projects, and the group thing is new to me. Somebody fill me in, please?

      Thanks!
    2. WritingTrue: They opened a beta this morning and sent a shout to a few people, without announcing it in general. They asked us to try it out, but i haven't seen any guidelines beyond that. Nor do I have any idea to whom we are supposed to submit beta reports or suggestions. So it's a work in progress.

I suppose each group will evolve in its own way, some more active than others.

On Bumpzee I started two groups, which there are called communities. There are both members and blogs listed, often more members than blogs, since not all blogs are directly related. Most of these community discussions can be read in the main list of discussions though. That doesn't seem to be the case here. A possible negative. On the other hand, there are more than a few topics we might not have to look at any more.

Anyway, I guess it's up to us.
  4. Looking forward to see where this leads to.
  5. Hi, I'm Gerri. Thanks for the invitation to join the group. I'm looking forward to the discussions here.
  6. Hi,I'm Barb. Thanks for the invitation --I am always excited to talk to people about writing.
  7. Megha,

Thank you for the 'welcome.' That was quite neighborly.

    Following what others have said:

Hi, I'm Norski (AKA Brian, AKA a few other monikers). I enjoy writing, and am trying to make a living at it. In a way.

A bunch of writers: there should be good communication in this group!
  8. I can't help but notice that we have 29 members and only nine people have introduced themselves...
    1. True. As norski said rightly, aren't writers good communicators too?? So I expect more & more discussions in this group. (sorry, though,in a lot of which I may not be able to participate due to the high level talks; but I enjoy reading & learning too!!)
    2. Megha, you obviously have a serious interest in writing and you're a reader--lack of experience doesn't invalidate your perspectives. In fact, sometimes it means that you're able to look at something more the way the readers would than the way a writer does, which can be very useful in finding what's most effective to reach an audience. PLEASE don't feel that you shouldn't actively participate because other people might have more experience.

  9. Hello, I'm Vivienne. I enjoy writing and its creative process tremendously. I have done technical writing, research, etc., but I am most fond of fiction writing (go ahead, insert your own crack about researchers here!). I'm especially fascinated with character development for fiction writers. Pleased to e-meet those of you I haven't already spoken with!
    1. Thanks for posting that, Bobbie. I'm not usually one to pay a lot of attention to the graphical presentation of a blog unless it's distracting, but this one just looks fantastic.

I really enjoyed what's currently the most recent post, about the new things that you see when you start photographing something--I think it's very relevant to writing as well, in that it often isn't until you start to describe something that you think about aspects you might normally gloss over or not consciously register.

I've bookmarked the photo galleries to look at with my daughter.
  10. My name is Bobbie. Most of you know that by now, and for those of you who don't know me, I'm a female Bobbie. ;-}

Until I began blogging, most of my serious writing had been academic in nature. I'm a research psychologist by profession -- so I've written many reports, papers, essays, and so on over the years.

I have some experience as a copy editor for academic publications.

I've always been a journal keeper, and a prolific letter writer. In my new personal blog I'm attempting to use my letter-writer voice to tell my stories -- on the advice of some of my 'correspondents' of long standing. We'll see how that works out...
    1. Glad to see you here, Bobbie. Last I recall, that personal blog wasn't listed here--is that still the case? Feel free to post a link here if you'd care to share.

I expect the "letter writing voice" will work out for you. We have one member of this group who once upon a time wrote an email that grew, without any marketing effort, into a column with hundreds of subscribers. I hope that she chooses to share a little more of that story here--it's a great testament to the idea that compelling writing will rise to the top regardless of other factors.
    2. Thanks, Tiffany. That new blog is now listed on BC now -- the one where I'm attempting to use my letter-writing voice. Here's the link:

  11. My name is Leann. My writing experience is varied. I have published two family history books. These were more gathering and organizing information than actual composition, though I did write a few short histories in each book. I also published a 12 page quarterly newspaper for the Golden Wheat Chapter of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia for 6 years. In my younger years I fancied myself a poet, but haven't composed a poem in a long time.
  12. I've been writing most of my life, but my degree is in music. That didn't keep me from becoming a professional sculptor or a writer, LOL! I'm on the south side of 50, live in Ohio, married 36 years, two grown kids, both married, and the grandkids are all "hairy" - grandhorses, grandgoats, grandcats, granddogs. As a sculptor, I mostly sculpt horses (I do a lot of trophy work as well as portraits) and most of my work is cast in bronze. Many of my sculptures are warmbloods because our daughter is an upper-level dressage rider and trainer. I ride and show a Quarter Horse. We've had Quarter Horses over 30 years, so a lot of my sculptures are Quarter Horses. The other most-represented breed in my bronzes is the Friesian horse. I'm just finishing a world championship trophy for them now.

As a writer, I'm currently writing fantasy novels. The first one, "Star Sons: Dawn of the Two" will be published soon, and its sequel (still untitled) is finished in first draft form. "Star Sons" will be at least a trilogy.

Other than that, I've written articles for magazines and newspapers over the last 20 years or more, and I ghost-wrote my father's WWII memoir and plan to either novelize it or make it a screenplay. I'm attempting to write some short stories to contribute to an anthology some friends of mine are involved in, but I think in "long form" -- I don't know if I CAN write a short story (as this post shows, LOL!)! We'll see. . .

I have a writing blog, "On Writing" (*such* an original title!) at whspubs.blogspot.com and a blog on art and writing at abraxan.blogspot.com. I'd like to learn how to drive traffic to both of them, and that's why I'm here.
  13. Hello y'all,

I'm Shari, one of the "Four Country Gals".

I too, have a degree in music, and spent most of my life in business, eventually owning a specialty meat processing plant, producing a product "nobody wanted or needed". Twelve years later, we were "international super stars" in a very tight niche.

I've been writing for some time now, and have have published two "e-books". One made me a tidy profit, and the other has been a "giveaway". I'm currently working on a third e-book which I will turn into a CD down the line.

What makes this one unique is that I'm actually doing "on the fly" with my shirttail flapping in the wind. You get to read it, enjoy it, and maybe even find a typo or two, as I'm doing it "blog style".

On the side, I also do a little copywriting for folks who are "copy challenged" on their web sites. If necessary, I've also been known to do a little web design, and marketing for them.

Just recently, I submitted my first "in depth" article to an online magazine and am awaiting the publishing before sharing the link.
  14. Hi. I'm Helen. Just introduced myself on the other strand and don't want to be repetitive, but in case the two strands don't converge .... I'm a writer, editor and also do some freelance writing. For 8 years, I've been putting out a free e-newsletter for writers. I mostly write mystery, but love all kinds of books. This is my third year to Chair for the Texas Book Festival and I've also worked on the committee heading up Mystery Month in Texas for three years.

I've been doing a blog about writing for a year now and I'm glad to see there will be some info about promoting your blog, as well as sharing about writing. Although I do my own website, I am definitely not tech savvy and simply do not understand stuff like linkbacks or setting up subscriber feeds, although I have managed to put one subscriber feed on my blog.

    Anyway, hallo to all.
    1. I have visited HelenGinger's blog, and it is indeed very good stuff!

      Bobbie
  15. Oops. Forgot to introduce myself. My name is Mark Stoneman and I write mainly academic history, though now I am also blogging. I also spend a lot of time helping my undergraduate history students learn how to write better.
    1. Hi Mark,

I'm a bit of a history buff myself. In 2000 I spent 48 days traveling The Oregon Trail and Applegate Trail (Southern Route to Oregon). We were using a journal written by some of the first folks to travel that trail in 1846. Unfortunately, I've not been able to write much about it, yet.
  16. Ian Thal, here. I've published my share of poems in literary journals and a few anthologies. I've used my blog mostly to document my artistic career (mostly as a performer) so it sometimes takes the form of essays on one hand and narrative on the other. Currently writing my first full length stage play.
  17. I've just been reading the introductions of all the members.
Wow, such a group of talented writers. I am really thrilled!
Interacting with them itself will be a learning process.
  18. im not a good writer but i believe you can influence me how to write a good contents. :-)
    1. Welcome aboard. Everyone can learn how to write better. Theoretically, at least.
  19. Hi MeghnaK,

    Thanks for the welcome.

I started blogging as an outlet for expression and simply because i have always love writing. Having just started on my writing journey, i am here to learn and grow as a writer and from what i have seen so far of the members in this group, i believe that my learning process is going to be an enjoyable and fruitful one.
  20. Since this thread got underway without me, it seems that I never actually introduced myself; it didn't seem necessary given the first day's list of participants but there are more than 70 of us now and definitely some unfamiliar faces in the crowd, so I guess I'll back up and do that.

My name is Tiffany (I've previously explained the "MadameX" thing in another thread--feel free to ignore that!), and my writing background is varied. I've published two books (one fiction under a pen name and one non-fiction), and had a contract for a third book that I ended up pulling out of because of a conflict with my current job. I did about four years as a stringer (freelance journalist) for 3-4 Illinois newspapers, published articles and essays in writing and parenting publications, wrote more bios on 80s bands than any human being could ever possibly want to read, made my living as a self-employed copywriter, wrote curriculum and training materials for a national educational corporation, and now work full-time as content manager for a national legal marketing firm.

I also have a couple of finished novels hanging around my house waiting for me to find time to do something with them, but it's hard to know when that day might come.

Great to "meet" you all; I'm really looking forward to developing this group with you.
  21. My name is Rebecca and I am a freelance writer, currently, I work for Pump Up Your Book Promotion PR Agency as a Tour Coordinator and I am looking for writers with blogs who would be interested in guest hosting an author. Imagine the traffic that could potentially be brought to your blog with a visiting author. Tell me you're interested. Send me a message at my site's shoutbox. I look forward to getting to know all of you.
  22. Hi My name is Terry, Systems Administrator and former dot com'r turned writer. Currently working on a novel and have written short stories and poems. In all I'm unpublished besides old articles and a poem or two that are long forgotten, but always look for a good discussions and debates in the world of writing.
  23. BUMP....
I found the Welcome Page clear at the end.
  24. MadameX can you sticky this? I know it's been done in other groups.
  25. Ah, here we are! Well, I'd just like to reintroduce myself. I'm René and I'm a writer like all of you. I hope to get to know you all and I'll try to swing by your blogs and comment your posts. You can find my blog at www.workingauthor.com.

    See you soon!
  26. Hi
My name is John Baker and I'm a writer, I suppose, exactly the same as the others in this group.
I hope to hang around here frequently.
My web site is at johnbakersblog.co.uk
    1. Welcome, John Baker. Interesting blog.
  27. Hello all.

My name is Kate and I've been lurking around BlogCatalog for a little while. I find writing to be therapeutic, but that I don't have much time to do it. I'll be graduating from college in the spring, so I've been concentrating most of my energy on that. I blog on and off, much to my distress. Hopefully I'll be able to keep it up this time.

    Kate

PS. My blog is writinginwax.blogspot.com .
  28. Hello, everyone. My name is Cheryl Snell and I have three published collections of poetry, and a new novel. My sister and I keep a blog for poetry and art at

  29. Hello. My name is Mary Klida and my pen name is Molly Brogan. I have been writing for magazines, newspapers and newsletters for the past several years and have published a play, a compilation of poems and two of three novels of a trilogy. I am currently ghost writing, working on that third novel and free lancing for news articles.

I created a blog to discuss my books with my readers (and enjoy this very much): mollybrogan.blogspot.com

I also have a blog to discuss life at cblegacy.blogspot.com

It is a pleasure getting to know you. Molly

  33. I'm web! Well I don't consider myself as a good writer but I write...I have a blog and thats as far as my professional writing career would go..^_^

    Well love and peace!

  34. My blog is about the book, The Last Whale, being published in 2008, a narrative nonfiction story about the 1977 direct action campaign to stop whaling in Australia. A real 1970s story of drugs, sex and rock 'n roll. Sort of. In any case, it gets inside the head of both whalers and anti-whaling activists.
Am interested to connect with other creative writers.
    best

  35. well, I joined this group about 3 months ago, but than ain't been back to post much I've been too busy, spending my time job hunting and writing my book for NaNoWriMo (you can check up on my progress for that on my writing blog: eknano.blogspot.com)
  36. Hi, is this a private party or can anyone join in?

I have been writing my blog for just over one year now and I love the freedom it gives me. I am a stay at home mum (I'm from Australia) and working from my laptop allows me to choose when I want to work. I also write on Go! Smell the Flowers with Mike up there. You can see my blog at angesbiz.com
  37. I have been blogging for quite sometime. I wish to know whether my blog is acceptable to the enlightened readership. I will be thankful if the members of this group encourage me with their suggestions. Thank you all in advance.
  38. hi ya all,

I am rampantheart aka ranjhani and i am just me.Writing is a passion and i love it and i will be an entrepreneur in the near future.
  39. Hello,
I recently started writing more seriously, so I may be a little rough around the edges. Please bear with me since I spend my time at work writing computer code.

It is nice to be able to sit down in front of a blank piece of paper (or actually a screen with a text editor) and jot down some thoughts that are far less structured than a programming language.

Most of the stuff I have written about is personal stuff, but I have been submitting some items to AC as well. (links to the AC stuff are in my blog if you are interested) Anyways, nice to meet everone)

Also, besides writing, I spend far, far, too much time reading. Books, internet blogs, you name it.
  40. Hi every body. I'm Stephanie and I'm an aspiring writer (who isn't). I'm still new to blogging, but started because I start an online class in January, and thought it could be a good way to test the waters with strangers reading my writing. Even though my blog is about silly fun things, it still counts as something.

  43. My name is Tom, and I'm a writer.
I started writing about twenty three years ago. I write every day, I just don't know how (or when) to stop. My writing has caused problems both personally and socially and I hope to get a better grip on it. I take every day as it comes and with help, know things can get better.
Oh ho ho, I really enjoy writing, for money or entertainment, in the people I've already met on blogcatalog I've met more writers than i have in any writing group- looking forward to getting to know you all better.
  44. I took the liberty of joining this group, which seemed interesting. So Hi to all! I am Sindhuri; a 16 year old, new at blogging... Writing is one of my hobbies, something that grows with you, and matures with you, I believe... Looking forward to being a real part of this group
    xoxo
  45. Hi all, I'm a writer and publicist who blogs PR & Marketing tips at fiercelystrategic.blogspot.com

However, I joined this group for inspiration regarding my humor memoir, Daddy's Gonna Buy That Baby a Jaguar. There's a review about my ebook here: petleopard.com/Books_by_Viqi_French.html

    Best!
  46. New on the site, figured I should join a few groups and all that, at least, and this definitely seems like the most appropriate place for me. I'm an aspiring novelist working on finishing his first novel by sometime in March or April, and hellbent on finding an agent - and hopefully publishing - within the year. Obviously, I've got my work cut out for me.

I blog over at spiralreverie.blogspot.com where I blog about writing, life, love, and so forth. I also write a lot of dumb adult audience oriented comedy posts and very short stories when the mood strikes me.
    1. Hi. My writing name is Orna Ross and my writing teeth were cut in 15 years of freelance features journalism in Dublin and London before I embarked upon fiction with the 668-pages of Lovers' Hollow. Writing fiction - especially a large novel spanning three generations and two plot lines that intersected across time - was a tad different to writing journalism.

Then began the almost equally drawn-out task of finding the right publisher. After a London literary agent held onto the manuscript for two years while failing to win interest, I reluctantly took the task upon myself. I forget how many rejections I got for because I used to tear them up as soon as they arrived -- but it was plenty.

In the end, four publishers, two Irish and two UK were simultaneously interested and I sold Lovers' Hollow to Penguin as part of a two-book deal. The second novel, A Dance in Time, (another big read) is due in Sept 2008.

The experience of selling my own work taught me a lot about the current publishing climate. Publishing is a tough business for everyone involved. To attend a book fair like Frankfurt or London is to see how removed the industry is from the daily concerns and challenges facing writers -- and vice versa.

I set up Font Literary Agency and Writing Centre to my bit in helping to bridge that gap and now enjoy representing other writers and, together with my colleague Ita O'Driscoll, getting them the best publishing deal and the widest audience for their work.

I continues to write novels and creative nonfiction and now, very recently, to blog, while doing what I can to help other writers along their creative and publishing pathways.

I'm delighted to join your group and would like to let you know of a group that I have just started which is specifically for those engaged in writing a book.

      Thanks for being there.

    2. Hi Ponkotsu
Like your writing. You might be also be interested in joining a new group which is specifically for those engaged in writing a book. Come along and share your challenges and what you are learning and also benefit from the experiences of others. www.blogcatalog.com/group/writing-a-book

Good luck with it, it ain't easy but (maybe because of that?) it's also the most rewarding activity in the whole wide world!
      Orna
      www.fontlitagency.com
    3. Thanks! I appreciate your checking out my blog. I'll check out your group as well. I'm sure it would make for some interesting reading and discussion, especially as I work on finishing my first novel and move on towards hunting for an agent and beginning the whole publishing process. It's pretty overwhelming.

I couldn't agree more. There's so many challenges involved, but writing something - let alone finishing it - is incredibly satisfying. If I can actually manage to find an agent and publisher for my novel this year, I imagine I'll be feeling on top of the world then.
  47. Howdy folks, thanks for allowing me to join the group. My blog is not 100% writing related, but there is a typewriter on it, so that counts, right?

I am currently writing several books and I enjoy snooping around and seeing what other writers are up to.

Feel free to poke around my blog and get to know me better.

  49. Just thought I should say "Hi" and introduce myself. I'm Nine Days, and it's nice to meet everyone.
  50. Howdy Nine Days, good to meet you! Welcome!
  51. Hi everyone,

I just started blogging a week ago. I'm a full time freelance writer with four books under my belt and two more on the way. I do mostly travel and history, but of course I'm an aspiring novelist too! Feel free to check out my writing blog at midlistwriter.blogspot.com/. There I talk about what it's like to struggle along in the midlists, being a writer who has made it but not made it big. From there you can link to my website and a travel blog I've started.
I'm always happy to meet other writers, and since I'm new at blogging, any advice about improving my blogs would be highly appreciated!
  52. hi! am i too late?

i'm Nice, working as a web writer but more interested in Creative Writing. i write poems and a few stories, but haven't published anything yet other than a few submissions in our school paper back in the university and some online posts. i'm hoping to get a master's degree in creative writing this year and pursue my writing passion. also hope to be a real member of this group. cheers to all writers!
  53. I'd resisted joining the group for a while because it seems ALL I do is write. I'm a web marketing writer professionally and with two blogs, I find I'm writing all the time in my spare time, as well.

But what I realized is, I don't get to DISCUSS writing very much. Not about the process or the life of writing. So I began to wonder just what was holding me back.
  54. Hi folks - ewoman here. Like ThriftShopRomantic, it seems all I do is write. I have a full time gig with an SEO pro and his clients, and I write a bi-weekly column for an online stock broker and a monthly magazine opinion column for a company that focuses on investing clubs. I also maintain a few blogs. But, I do not complain. Life is good. Every once in a while I emerge from my home office to put a curb on this Geico Cavewoman image that I've created, then I get back to work.

I'm jealous of the book writers here - I can't seem to maintain interest in one subject long enough to go beyond 2500 words...
  55. Hi all! I'm webmaster and columnist for three newspapers, having previously worked as a reporter and editor. My current column is about the internet, so I started a blog to write about my other interests.
  56. Hi, I'm Angela, a freelance writer and published author. I write about the craft of writing and writing news in my professional blog, www.pearlwriting.com. I also maintain a life blog (www.angelawd.com.

  57. Hi! I have to confess that I'm not really a writer. In fact I happen to be in one of those trades that requires no writing most of the time. But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy it.
  58. Hi everyone,
I'm an advertising copywriter and have been for about 13 years. Now I'm working client-side and couldn't be more bored. This is the result of my boredom... figmentsofamom.blogspot.com
  59. Gidday, I'm glad to be part of this group and to give as much help as I can. Being a direct response copywriter is a far cry from being a commercial banker for 15 years, so I taught myself and have managed to travel the world and speak in Australia (my country), London and all on America on copywriting which includes seminar for self publishing authors. I also wrote copy for 2 people from the move 'THE SECRET'.

My revamped blog on writing is a blast of brutal honesty so brace yourself. www.TrevorCrookBlog.com

PS. I'm looking forward to contributing.
  60. Hi there.

I have a blog and I try to write other stuff. I've just finished a book but it's too short. And it's probably silly, too. I've published some short things online and in print, but it doesn't count until I'm asked to appear on a talk show.
    1. Since you're not gonna say it, I will. Your blog is just about personal stuff, but it is a fine example of how a blogger's voice can make the voice and posts compelling to total strangers. Good stuff.
    2. Thanks, Mr. Stoneman. I knew I could count on you. Still, five minutes to discuss my great novel on The Colbert Report wouldn't hurt me.
  61. Yo!

I'm Prider. I host a morning radio show and started CrashedUp.com to have a little more fun. It's a collection of cool bits from my show and other things that I wouldn't dream of putting on my show (censors and other things ya know). Anyway, it's fun for me to create and hopefully you guys will dig it!

THANKS!!! I wish I would have had an opportunity like this when I was young. But there still is hope for me.

I have posted about it on my blog too.

  63. Hey everyone!

My name is Charles and I'm from New York. I just started blogging pretty much, I generally just write about cultural and political issues, but I plan on expanding and exploring new possibilities.

My writing definitely needs a lot of work, and honestly I'm not sure if anything that I write is interesting to most people, I don't have many readers currently (the most readers I've ever had was about 50 in a day) so taking those numbers into account, it probably isn't haha.

Here's my blog if anyone wants to check it out: www.various-thoughts.com/

  64. Hello. I'm Phil. I've gathered a lot of strange stories over the years and I'm finally getting them written. I'd love for people, especially fellow writers to take a look, give input, suggestions, etc.

  68. Hi everybody. My newest blog is My Writing Life, a site where I share lessons and tips I've learned about novel writing along my path of getting my medical thriller published. I update that one every day with a new lesson. Right now I'm into a ten-step revision process that I'm describing as my novel is in its final revision stage for my agent.

Please check it out and send thoughts. I'd love it to be an open forum on writing.
  69. Hello everyone,

My name is François Monney and I'm a translator (German > French). I write for fun during my free time. I suppose I agree with this group for the same reasons that its current members.

I hope to hang around here frequently.

  70. Hello all you fabulous writers!

While I do have a humor blog (Nanny Goats In Panties), I also write short stories and personal essays with some of them getting published in online litmags. I'm also currently working on a novel that may get set aside for my first attempt at NaNoWriMo coming up in November.

I look forward to gabbing about that whole writing thing with you.

  71. Hello everyone,

I haven't had time yet to really read much yet on this blog, let alone post anything. When I have time I'll say more, but for now feel free to visit my blog at hopetocope.blogspot.com. I enjoy writing, especially poetic prose, learning other languages, besides Spanish and German, I'm studying French and Hebrew, but mostly my blog is to be a source of help for others working through Posttraumatic Stress Disorder as I am. It does help to write about it; it has for me.

  73. Hi, I am Liz. My main reason for blogging is that yes, I want to be a writer. I am 47 years old and it's really about the only thing I do really really well. Even though I have a plethora of interests and hobbies, writing is the only thing I have consistently been told that I should pursue. I am interested in writing nonfiction editorials (blogging is good practice for that) I also write poetry, although that is not something I share with the internet, usually.
