In an attempt to stop the growing number of black teenagers dropping out of schools in Toronto, equity officer Lloyd McKell is suggesting an all-black school.

The rhetoric behind it is that black students will feel less prone to drop out of school if taught by black teachers. Yet there are some inherent flaws in his plan:

A similar plan in Columbus, Ohio has failed to solve the issue, and some of Toronto and Canada's most successful business men and women are black, so mixed education obviously works.

What's your opinion?

I completely disagree with this decision. But ... no one asked me when the decision was being made, imagine that.

It was weird that they made the announcement on Martin Luther King day ... when he wanted desegregation ... we segregated. Odd.

I think it is a good idea...The quality of any education has little to do with color of skin anyways...

If Children are more comfortable being with their cultural peers(as if this can be accomplished without bleeding the taxpayers)chances are they will learn more...

In a large urban center like Toronto there is greater potential for ethnic educations vs rural or small cities...

Shouldn't we be teaching children to be "comfortable" with other cultures so that when they go out into the workforce ... you know, real life, where there's lots of cultures ... they'll be "comfortable".

Why isolate children by their culture? We don't have an all black or all white or all asian country.

My 79 year old Father recently told me that it isn't your racial background that determines your position in life but how you treat people and your sense of integrity. This is from a man who was Hispanic fighting in the Korean War and razing his family in Texas. Of course I have a slightly different take on his perspective but we are from different generations. I have to say I do agree with him to some extent. I dropped out of high school because of racial tension and lack of sensitivity but I didn't let that stop me. I have held important positions in four major corporations, worked as a computer tech/supervisor for the government and continued my education on my own time. Education is overrated in the now defunct over policed system and as an educator my Wife finds it very frustrating with the new No Child Left Behind mentality that has allowed children and their parents to fail in accepting responsibility for thier own actions. You might say the welfare mentality has reached the education system and it was a Republican President who has allowed this to happen. The dumbing down of America is complete with GW as president. I only hope the illiterate children of the future can make the right decisions when it comes to survival or extinction.

So.... my opinion is, it doesn't matter what they do, the problem isn't the education system, the problem is a lack of vision and overly comfortable people. In short, Americans have gotten very LAZY! Perhaps the rest of the World is following suit.
