Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter will switch his party affiliation from Republican to Democrat and announced today that he will run in 2010 as a Democrat, according to a statement he released this morning.

Specter's decision would give Democrats a 60 seat filibuster proof majority in the Senate assuming Democrat Al Franken is eventually sworn in as the next Senator from Minnesota. (Former Sen. Norm Coleman is appealing Franken's victory in the state Supreme Court.)

Only because he doesn't think he can run in 2010 on a Republican ticket.

    You beat me to it

It's both shocking and not shocking news. The right has alienated so many moderates in the party that this is bound to happen. I think Specter picked the absolute perfect word when answering questions abut what the Republican party is like right now when he said "They are willing to toss elections to purify the party."

    Purify the evil

You have to go and read the absolute flamewar in the comments section now.

I swear, you'd think someone just got dumped for a hot, young, blonde

actually a better analogy would be the that the Republicans are the has-been divorcee who got caught screwing the boss, and now her ex is dating a slightly controlling librarian girl.

*I appologize to librarians who may have been offended*

I saw a great comment along those lines...something like:

It's akin to a spouse changing the locks and leaving a note on the front door saying "I want a divorce", and then acting offended and outraged when they get their wish.

      Yep.

they would much rather not be dumped... and rather Night-of-Long-Knives him out the next primary season

I know that this ties in with Republican primary politics in PA, but this is also of a piece with Colin Powell's endorsement of Obama last fall. The GOP is barely recognizable to many people today. It is certainly what I once knew as a New Englander.

I've noticed a serious sway in the political parties here in New England. The line between republican and democrat (moderate each) has become seriously blurred, while the extreme right has gone off the deep end, and the extreme left has well...not really done anything to speak of.

I wonder if this shift to extreme politics will create a third "centrist" party by default?

I for one would like to thank Mr. Specter for reinvigorating our discussion board

The Republican party is unrecognizable to many, sad for them, but Spector's defection makes only one statement really, and that is that there are no Republicans or Democrats just politicians. We'd all do best to remember that.

Sadly, he might have been the bright spot of the party

LOL even my mom's all [insert whiny tone]"He was always a Democrat, it's just for the votes, he's never been a real Republican"[/whiny tone]

Yeah, because 30 years as a Republican is something to sneeze at, and he was just willing to give up everything to be elected again. Of course, she doesn't read anything but the local yokel paper, and hasn't been paying attention to the moderates jumping ship....

Oh, and it was OK when Lieberman did it
    1. Agit8r
well yeah. Lieberman was ALWAYS a Republican, that's why he campaigned for McCain who was ALWAYS a Democrat... wait o_0

      Hahahah LOLLOL

    3. Agit8r

    4. Anok
      My mom, of course
    5. Agit8r
