Political Discussions

Here in my region we are going to get a brand new school. This is a big deal especially since Barack Obama is up for consideration as the name of the school. www.wsaz.com/newswestvirginia/headlines/39774557.html

I think if it were named Barack Obama it would get national news and potentially extra donations to the school.

However, there are a lot of people who are upset by all this. My state went republican during the election and a good portion of the parents are talking of pulling their kids out of the school.

So, what do you think of naming a school Barack Obama?

Would you pull your child out of school over the name of the school?

Pulling your kids out of a new state of the art school because it's named after a president you didn't vote for?

    That's absurd.

I mean, I could understand a protest if they were trying to name the school after someone who was heinous. The "Charles Manson" school for girls, or the "Gacey school of science" or the "Hitler school of religious tolerance" but Obama?

Come on people. There are countless schools bearing the names of presidents past that may or may not have been the best president, or may or may not have been a president you voted for.

This just shows me that people are more concerned over political bullshit than the future and well being of their own children.

I agree with you 200%. In my state I think it is more than political B.S. No one is saying but I would put money down on racism which is pretty big in my state.

This is true - such a sad thing to think about, really.

This is an every day thing though. When I first moved here as a child I went into extreme culture shock. I came from Cleveland which is very diverse. My first day of school I noticed everybody was white. I thought there were students missing or something. I mentioned to a friend how I had a friend who had a white parent and a black parent she told me "Oh, so she's a zebra?" Until recently, KKK was welcome in many of the rural areas. It's sad but true.

Voting rallies for ol' Senator Byrd?
    5. Shiley
Senator Byrd has enough named after him soulofthesenate.org/named.html
Being a Senator that has served longer than anyone else you would kind of expect a lot of things to be named after him.
    6. jhixon2
      Unfortunately he is a racist.
    7. Agit8r
Frighteningly, as Grand Wizard (or whatever) of the senate, he's forth in line of ascendence to the presidency.

Isn't it a little early to be naming a school after BHO?
    1. Anok
I don't think so. Why would it be?
    2. libertycast1
Well technically probably not, but if you look at it in a sense of prestige an honor I might say so. It's real easy to get you face on currency but there is reason why they are dead presidents. You can't guarantee what one will do in the future. Look at Bush's popularity levels at first and now look at them. Obama may have a historical significance racially, but why would you do it even for that when we have no idea what we will see for sure in the future. What if for some absolutely unthinkable unlikely action actually does occur and Obama goes crazy in some sense or another. What if Hitler was decent before he went into power - I would think his school would be a bit of an embarrassment. Granted I'm not actually comparing Obama with Hitler. All I am saying is that we can't guarantee the future with human nature and yeah we can do it but it is possible to regret it later. I think the more responsible thing to do is what till he's dead, or at least what till he is done running for anything and really retires.

For all those Hillary voters there in WV
  3. satijournal
That's republicans for you. Politics are more important to them than even their children's education.
    1. libertycast1
      Wow that's absurd.
    2. Agit8r
Hey, Bush has a sewage treatment facility named for him. That's fair right?
    3. jhixon2
      Sati your brainwashed aren't you?

A school in New York has already been named Barack Obama www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/11/21/national/main4626367.shtml

This is a school that has already been sitting there.

The school in my region will be brand new and if I know anything about WV schools totally state of the art. Even the old schools are pretty high tech a lot of funding goes toward kids and levies always pass.
  5. jhixon2
I would love to have my school named after a person who has accomplished nothing except reform our government to socialism. Real American.
    1. RenalFailure
But you have no problem with things named after members of the Confederacy, right JLowe?
    2. jhixon2
Shutup with your racist nonsense that hates on the south. There is no use for it here.
    3. RenalFailure
      The Confederacy's not a race.

    6. jhixon2
Well he implies the south is full of racists. Of course he will deny it because he is a dumb ass.

If the parents are willing to downgrade their childrens education based on a name, odds are they aren't promoting an education based environment at home anyway. Their kids have a few extra loadstones around their necks.

For the best education, I would be happy to send my kids to the Adolph Hitler Jewish Day School.
    1. csiunatc
What says that this is the best school? Why does it have to be a "downgrade" surely you don't suggest that it's going to be extra good becuse its named after the Comrade in chief?
    2. Shiley
There is a misconception of the way people are about kids here. If it is a school here it will be better. They build broadcast studios, film developing rooms, and greenhouses in the schools. A levy for schools never fall through. They are so serious about an education jobs that pay minimum wage require a high school diploma. I think xmarks means that for a brand new school he doesn't care what the school is named.

As a parent of a child who will attend this school we were just given a choice as to what to name the school. My choices were West Side Elementary which just reminded me of rap music which I hate, River Side because of it's placement in front of the river, Isom Cabell which was partially the name of the school that used to be there for problem kids which isn't good, and Barack Obama. In my mind's eye Barack Obama was the most appealing and it may bring extra funding for the school should it make national news. This was a vote my husband and I both discussed heavily. I think they rigged it so the other choices weren't as appealing.

csi: I went by the op description. Wow. "Comrade in chief" that's so funny. Did you make up that right wing propaganda all by yourself?

for me the name of the school is the reason to pull out your kid in that school..its baseless.

      A couple of thoughts....

First off, I wouldn't begrudge anyone their ability to protest by putting their children in a different school. That IS what America is about...freedom to speak out in protest.I also would not belittle them, either. Now as to whether I would do that...no. I would not take my children out of a school based on the name, unless it was something ludicrous like the Adolph Hitler Memorial School or satijournal school...JUST JOKING sati. (sorry, I couldn't resist) Seriously though, I know that my wife and I would only protest the name to the degree of pulling our kids out because of said name if it were, as I said named after Hitler or Saddam Hussein, etc...

Secondly, I know there is no hard and fast rule, but I always was under the impression that naming buildings, bridges, etc... after people usually happened after their death. As a memorial, or in the event of a large endowment, such as to a University.
