California seems to be heading for skid row.

Up until recently Governor Schwarzenegger has been regularly inviting, via our televisions, Polybore and other Scots to go and work in California.

Don't think we will be seeing much of the ad for a while.

The governance system in California seems unable to react to impending economic disaster. While California is credit downgraded (to the lowest level of all US states), it's employees are made redundant and IOU s are handed out government sits on it's hands.

IS this peculiar to California or can we look at this as a microcosm of the US economy as a whole? Which state will be next?

California is bankrupt, and has or will shortly be running out of funds, period according to some news sources. They've begun asking the individual counties to pay for civil services, promising to pay them back when this is over.

I think that - depending on how the stimulus works for state governments - you could be seeing more states falling off the bankruptcy cliff.

In a way...it's kind of an Anarchist's dream to watch the system implode like this. It'll suck if it actually happens, but it'll also be the catalyst for change.

A lot of those damn Californians move to Colorado. They were calling it Colofornia for a while. I say give California whatever it takes to keep them there. We don't tie sweaters around our necks here or wear ear muffs and mittens when it's 40 degrees out. GO HOME!

      Are you from Littleton?

(I lived there for 3 years)

Us Californians could not understand for the life of us why Coloradoens voted down having the Winter Olympics.

Isn't interesting that it's California that is hitting the shits.

One of the more progressive states.

More government control and legislation on people and companies

    And huge illegal immigration problems.

You'll see each and every one of these things being blamed for it...

Csi- Not only is it interesting to watch the fall of such a progressive state, but it is also ironic too.

      They have a Republican governor.

And what does that have to do with what i said?

At 13% of US GDP and on it's own the worlds 8th largest economy it is rather worrying. The main reasons , it seems, for the predicament are California's huge manufacturing sector has taken a massive hit, the Californian property boom has burst and the fact that a two thirds majority is needed to get any legislation passed.

Any notion of California being a progressive state went down the pan with Prop 8.

      Florida next?

Florida is certainly hurting. A Fl, bankruptcy is further away though. But not too big a stretch of the imagination.

California will always be home to dreamers, wanderers, and the most wide ranging society ever.

I know that our boasting turns a lot of people off...but we shall overcome!

Did someone say Arnold was a Republican? You don't actually believe that do you? Tom McClintock is a Republican. Compare...

The problem with California is that it requires a supermajority to pass its budget, 2/3 if memory serves. That makes accomplishing any meaningful change in a difficult situation extremely difficult, because a relatively small minority can stop the work of governing in its tracks.

The size of California's economy means it gets everyone's attention, but I think we have to get used to California being in this kind of situation. We have seen it in better times as well. I don't envy the Governator his job.

Another piece of CA bankrupcy is that too few of the population has roots there. When they start to get into trouble, they may move home to another state.
