Obama has been working hard on his stimulus package. Do you like what you hear, or do you need to see more.

Do you know whats in the package?

he's doing his best with the mess in front of him
no one can say he didnt try to work with the GOP
i dont want to read a 1000-page document
i trust the people i elected to do the right thing
  2. aningeniousname
Only Michelle (and a few gay men alledgedly) know what's in Obama's package.
    1. Agit8r
I thought we were talking about a package of cigs
  3. mikeny07
I read 61% don't like it because they want more tax cuts. It is all spending more money. Tax cuts I think are the best way to go. Not bigger government. He should have listened to McCain.
    1. melindaville
You got your # turned around. According to a CNN poll that came out yesterday, 75% of Americans approve of the job Obama is doing. According to the Pew poll, 64% approve. Either way, he's hugely popular.

He shoots from the hip--telling us exactly what is going on. He's refreshing.

Thank God George Bush Is Gone!
    2. csiunatc
      Good analogy..

Shooting from the hip means you shoot fast, but with no precision. And more often than not, you'll miss your target completely.
    3. drjay1966
Yes! More of what got us in the mess in the first place!

Do you Republicans have some kind of secret plan for what you're going to do once you've destroyed this country completely?
    4. Politicalcrunch
Hate to tell you this but all Presidents have those high approval #s at the beggining!, down to 55% now, lower than Bush at this point!
    5. Rainhat
I think I remember reading on BBC news that Obama's approval rating is actually higher than Bush's at this point... I guess it all depends on where you get your news...
  4. ruttergod
personally, i liked having the "dumb" guy, it was just an act anyway, no one can actually fumble up speeches that much. Obama is just in love with himself.
    1. melindaville
You must not live in the U.S. if you liked the 'dumb guy' better. Cause he really effed us up.
    2. Shuttercraft
Uhhhh... ya... ummm... Do you live in the US?
    3. kmoore
The fumbling during speeches may have been an act, but the ignorance was not...look at where we are now.
    4. Politicalcrunch
Ya, much worse off, for all of you out there who think the Dems were all innocent in the recent crises caused mainly by the housing bubble and the sub prime mortgage mess NEED to read this: www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=310173877357981

And remeber that it was Bush who as far back as 2003 warned that Freddie and Fannie were getting out of hand and posed a systematic threat to the entire financial system, it was Bush (a Republican) who advocated a new regulatory body with more power to regulate them and it was the Dems who opposed and prevented it from getting a vote in the Senate and said that they did not see any problems in the finacial markets! & then went on to accuse Republicans of trying to prevent people from getting affordable housing (Dems term for Sub Prime mortgages) by trying to destroy Fannie & Freddie who were the enablers of the vast majority of the sub prime mortgages being issued.
  5. CentricStudios
I think he is on the SAME track. But he is better at marketing and understanding "the google" than his distant cousin was.
  6. Rich
He just blacklisted Las Vegas for business conventions. So, I am a biased at the moment, given he took aim at this city's primary industry. Las Vegas is already suffering a 10 percent unemployment rate, so he basically just threw it under the bus.

It would be like him saying that owning a car made in Detroit didn't measure up to his environmental standards so companies in line to receive bailout money can not longer buy those cars. The information he used to declare Las Vegas unacceptable wasn't even accurate. He quoted $300 room rates when one of the more lavish rooms at the Venetian average $189 per night. There are plenty of cheap rooms too; the $99 per night rate still exists.

It's also another campaign promise broken. When he spoke here last, he said he would support tourism here.
    1. csiunatc
      Wow, nice move there..

Lets see, maybe next we should blacklist Kansas for grain, Texas for beef production.. or Georgia for peanuts, god knows those have been less than perfect lately.

Enough of the "popular vote" policymaking. Did he think that you can run a country by making statements to those that just want what "sounds good" ?

OH well... Nevada voted for him. I hope the "change" is working for them.
    2. Rich
It's true. My state went blue.
      Now the green. Remains unseen.

      Sigh.

I did not vote for him, but I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
    3. Anok
Could you please tell me how and when the president blacklisted an entire state?

      With references?
    4. AlexGreat
Conventions in Vegas is stone era communication. Who needs to travel for business (and gambling) when you have the internet
I love Vegas and it is certainly a place to visit but not for the wrong reasons and not on my expense by someone else. I prefer to go there myself.
    5. jasonthebaldguy
I think this is more about rampant waste and unethical business practices than just killing tourism... I personally have seen companies that I worked for spend into the hundreds of thousands on bringing a conference to vegas and for the hundreds of thousands spent the return was pretty much nothing... the attendees were already faithful clientele that would have remained so even for a thirty thousand dollar Atlanta convention
    6. maxisangry
I say we blacklist Texas for Presidents.

The package is a ticking time bomb for the American economy, chock full of pork spending and very little actual economic stimulus. It is a fraud. So is Obama and his team of socialist insurgents. An uprising is inevitable.
    1. drjay1966
The uprising already happened. The Republicans got thrown out of power. Though, clearly, we didn't kick out nearly enough of them.
    2. AlexGreat
Next Bush waits for his turn, never fear!
  9. glgoodlife
The funny thing is the Republicans who are criticizing Obama for the stimulus package are the same ones who made the decisions to put us in this mess..so why should have any confidence in what they are saying..

although I do think there a few things that Obama probably wont be able to do..

The really funny thing is that people still cling to the idea that there is a difference between the Democrats and Republicans. They both have done their fair share of robbing the American people. USA! USA!

It will lessen the pain a little but the 100s of billions in tax cuts will do little to revive the economy and should have been removed.
  12. SailboaterRob
Rahm Emanuel said this in November, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste. Things that we had postponed for too long, that were long-term, are now immediate and must be dealt with. This crisis provides the opportunity for us to do things that you could not do before."
  13. meridance
I don't know if he's on the right track, but he's definately HOT!
  14. angryqueer
Yes. He is on the right track alright. The center-right track to be specific. The guy is brilliant, as is his PR team, so Brand Obama is a tabula rasa that can be whatever you want it to be. He duped a lot of liberals and so-called "progressives", that's for sure.
  15. jasonthebaldguy
of all the fingerpointing... I could care less..

I like knowing more about whats going on... the websites... the regular updates.. and what seems to me like candid accountability.. If it is just PR then yes... I will be dissapointed.. but he has done what he promised.. he has acted quickly and decisively... I must give someone like that some leeway to see if they might just be able to lead!

    This video is amazing!
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjXyqcx-mYY&eurl=http://shuttermag.wordpress.com/pa...

I could have posted a link to this video on my blog. I just feel like such a spammer when I do that, so I posted a direct youtube link! I do not want to be a link whore!

This video made me cry, and I do not cry often (since I was ten)

-Lyrics- It was a creed written into the founding documents that declared the destiny of a nation. Yes we can. It was whispered by slaves and abolitionists as they blazed a trail toward freedom. Yes we can. It was sung by immigrants as they struck out from distant shores and pioneers who pushed westward against an unforgiving wilderness. Yes we can. It was the call of workers who organized; women who reached for the ballots; a President who chose the moon as our new frontier; and a King who took us to the mountaintop and pointed the way to the Promised Land. Yes we can to justice and equality. Yes we can to opportunity and prosperity. Yes we can heal this nation. Yes we can repair this world. Yes we can. We know the battle ahead will be long, but always remember that no matter what obstacles stand in our way, nothing can stand in the way of the power of millions of voices calling for change. We have been told we cannot do this by a chorus of cynics…they will only grow louder and more dissonant ……….. We’ve been asked to pause for a reality check. We’ve been warned against offering the people of this nation false hope. But in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope. Now the hopes of the little girl who goes to a crumbling school in Dillon are the same as the dreams of the boy who learns on the streets of LA; we will remember that there is something happening in America; that we are not as divided as our politics suggests; that we are one people; we are one nation; and together, we will begin the next great chapter in the American story with three words that will ring from coast to coast; from sea to shining sea — Yes. We. Can.
  17. becthomasphotograp
No he's not really on the right track at all. He's talking alot of talk aimed at making people believe he knows what he's doing but in the end were still going to have a bad economy and an even bigger national debt with little actual reform to the way things are done. Many of the people who are on Obamas team were the same people that were on the Clinton team in the 90's, and they never left the hill when Bush moved into the White Housem they just changed positions. You can't bring about major changes with the same ole players right back in the spots they have been in for years. Were still caught in a broken record routine that started with the Reagan years, hopefully someday some real change that doesn't screw over most of America will come about, but it isn't going to happen in the next four years.
    1. harveyavatar
      I agree 100 per cent.

Imo, the White House is only a third rung of power.

A "tale" which addresses the underlying economic reality.

      www.michaeljournal.org/myth.htm
    2. becthomasphotograp
LOl that is because it is only the 3rd rung, people just don't seem to realize that congress and the courts share the power in this country. It's amazing how many poeple think Obama can tell congress what to do...
    3. harveyavatar
I was thinking more of the descendants of the guy who said "Permit me to issue and control the money of a nation, and I care not who makes its laws. " as the first rung of power.

NO. U.S. President Barack Obama and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner received failing grades for their efforts to revive the economy from participants in the latest Wall Street Journal forecasting survey.
and democrat and Obama supporter and Billionaire investor Warren Buffett predicted that "the nation's economy will be in shambles throughout 2009" and probably "well beyond." www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29441863/ but hey Obama's the only community organizer we have.
  20. askcherlock
In less than 100 days, I think he is doing the best he can given the mess he inherited. He is certainly not "the Messiah" and as such he will make mistakes. But I do believe he is as honest a politician as we can get. These are frightening and sad times for many. While I have my doubts about Geithner, it seems to me that none of the talking heads have viable solutions to all of our economic problems. New territory with high impact on the vulnerable.
  21. codesucker
Please note that in order to suceed in politics you need to be a damn good liar.

Obama has his own hidden agenda, but it's a much more democratic one.. if Obama had his way, everyone man woman and child would have health coverage, every child would have a full education. Obama is for the poor.

Republicans don't want this because their hidden interests lay with the rich, if the banks are owned by the government then the stockholder get shafted. If healthcare was nationalized then doctors would get paid much much much less. Republicans are for the Rich.

The above is not opinion, it's observation, my opinion is below:

Obama has done more positive work in the past 50 days than Bush did in 8 years I'm totally gay for Obama, in a straight way.

Yesterday 3-12-09 I went to a Tea Party video taping protesters of Obama's socialist agenda. This is one of many such "Tea Parties" that seem to be percolating through the country. In the video the mc tells of girl ordering lot's of McDonalds food in the drive through and when asked to pay for it she said she didn't need money because Barrack had just been elected. It's impossible to say whether the stimulus is working - it just got passed and none of it as been implemented yet. This instant gratification thing is way out of hand.

The only way the economy will turn around is if the average wage increases commensurate with prior cycles of inflation. The real problem in our economy is that all the money has gone to the top - and it's been sucked out of the bottom. Money does not recirculate down from the top at a high rate.

They've convinced the average person to borrow years of earnings from their future, in some cases to buy crap they didn't need, in many cases just to survive. Folks had to borrow, because they didn't get paid enough in the first place.

Before you complain about the people being stupid and/or greedy, remember, buying that crap they didn't need is what has been fueling growth in the economy for quite some time. That and the housing bubble psychosis.

Tax cuts will not fix this mess. We've been there, and done that several times now. We need a seismic shift in the psychology and spirit of capitalism. The best thing you can do is buy local from small or employee-owned businesses and support those that treat their employees well.

    RE: Obama's socialist agenda

Does this mean we're going to value human life more than dollars now?
    1. harveyavatar
      SB,

You are right but fail to point out all this is a consequence of a debt based money system. I wrote:

"In a debt based money system, inflation increases mecanically... at a geometric rate (all things being equal). All money is debt, and the debt must ever increase. There is no reverse gear.

Without a positive current account balance and/or savings, the tower of debt starts falling apart once the total interest due rises above incremental debt. Unfortunately, the collapse doesn't pan out as smoothly as in a controled demolition."
    2. Anok
Does this mean we're going to value human life more than dollars now?

I sure hope so - but I won't hold my breath. People are still thoroughly convinced that one day they too will be part of the upper 1%. Never gonna happen, but that's the American Dream, now.
    3. SamBangs
      harveyavatar

I hear what you're saying, but I don't want to open that can of worms. It would require several books to go through why and how a fractional reserve system falls apart. Additionally, there's really no action that can be taken about it at this time.

I hate to make a complaint or point out a problem without proposing some kind of solution (even if it's not a great one) - it's a personal thing.
    4. Politicalcrunch
How about freedom? How about not giving 300 people in DC more power over our lives? How about you excersize that freedom and stop buying that worthless garbage you speak of?

Here is a reminder of what Obama said, if we did not pass the $800 Billion Stimulus package the economy would be a disaster and we would get to 9% unemployment in 2010, if we did pass it unemployment would only get to 8%, well, we passed it, 4 months later, 2.5 million jobs lost and unemployment reaches 9.5% which is .5% worse than Obama's stated worse case scenario without the $800 Billion plan.

Now, the Fed has issued a report saying that they project NO NET job growth for 5 years!

You say it has not had time to get started yet, well, Obama and Summers stated emphatically that the effects would be immediate, maybe they lied or maybe they believed it, however, maybe that is the ignorance of thinking that Gov Deficit spending programs are going to get us out of a recession in the 1st place? you see, whatever you were going to do, it had to address current economy not next years economy!

By taking that approach you risk allowing things to get so bad that when the money gets there it will have a minimal impact.

We could have instead eliminated all income, SSI & medicare taxes for everyone for a year for what the stimulus bill costs, think about the immediate impact that could have had? less foreclosures? Less cuts in family budgets, immediate spending into the economy, etc....
  25. Arcticulates
Sooner or later he is going to be forced into making the unpopular decisions. One person can only do so much, to make what seems like most everyone happy... then all a sudden he will no longer be popular and become the fall guy for every single thing that's wrong with the world. I feel sorry for anyone who takes on the job of President.
    1. harveyavatar
      That was well articulated
    2. becthomasphotograp
Ya that is a certainty, although Obama has brought that upon himself even more so then many of our past Presidents because he keeps promising a chicken in every pot. He's set himself up to fail because it's impossible for him to keep most of the promises he's made, the excutive branch doesn't even have the power to do some of the things he's promised.
  26. Rudscyber
Its really dificult to "become" and "be" a president. but we still hoping that the subtle wind goes right to him and keeping him to the center of his path.
  27. ubrewme
I hope it blows him out of office.
He path is too centered for me. He's driving us further in the dirt. He needs to concentrate on helping America and is problems instead of worrying about reversing all decisions made by Republicans.
He needs to play the role of President and stop all the pissing contests with Republicans.
Republicans, Democrats, it doesn't matter who did what, when. They're all at fault and they are still playing their games and looking out for THEIR best interests. It's all about GREED!
    1. melindaville
      Wow.

"I hope it blows him out of office."

So, you (like Rush) wish him to fail. Don't you realize that if he fails--IF he is 'blown out of office' that we all lose?

He's done more good in the last 60 days than George W. Bush did in 8 years. You think our country is in trouble? Look right to that monkey-faced liar.
    2. Politicalcrunch
"So, you (like Rush) wish him to fail. Don't you realize that if he fails--IF he is 'blown out of office' that we all lose?"

If you believe that Obama's or Bush's policies are going to hurt the counrty then you would have to be an idiot to hope he succeeds at implimenting them!

That is what Rush meant by his statement!
  28. harveyavatar
    SB,

    I hear you.

I shall point out that between the Charybdis of immediate deflationnary or stagflationnary depression and the Scylla of medium term hyperinflationnary depression, Charybdis is the lesser evil.

Before envisionning solutions, one must grasp the underlying problems at the source.

I don't "want" him to fail, but he clearly doesn't know what he's doing! I will gladly take it back if he starts doing something.
I am sick to death of hearing the comment referencing back to Bush. Is that all you have? He didn't do this, either. It's an accumulation of many years of having CROOKS IN GOVERNMENT. You can blame him all day long, but it's not going to solve the problem, nor will it change the facts.
Trying being a little open minded and open eyed.
Everyone wants it to be Republican vs. Democrat and it's not.
It's BIG GOVERNMENT vs.THE AMERICAN PEOPLE and until the American People wake up and say NO MORE, it will progressively get worse.
It doesn't matter what you or I say, the proof is before us. Watch how it plays out! Then, who will you blame?
    1. becthomasphotograp
I'm with you over the dem vs rep debate, I'm sick of it. When I hear it out in public I tell people you do know they are both corporations right and since when do corporations look out for the common good?
  30. cko20
I agree with ubrewme. Every blames Bush. Yes, he was an idiot and didn't help matters, but it didn't start with him.

On that note, I respect Obama for at least trying to take immediate action. I'm just not sure this is the sort of thing to rush through without full examination of where the money will be spent. OH - And his campaign promises to NOT load up the stimulus with earmarks is out the door. Plus, he is not instilling any confidence in the American public about the economy - every time he speaks about the economy, the dow drops!
  31. mikeny07
Big spending and big government has never worked anyplace in the world before, why does Obama think it will work for the first time ever? The money spent will never be paid off if we lived 500 years.
    1. melindaville
Wrong. It got us out of the Great Depression in the 1930's.

      Next!

    2. harveyavatar

I'm just praying that he gets into a fight with a llama so we can see the headline "Obama llama ding dong!"
  33. mikeny07
It is opinion. Some say the spending in the 1930s made the depression far worse. Good article on here.

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Deal

It was a different time since we had WWII. The economy actually grew because of war spending and many people being put back to work because of it.
  34. harveyavatar
    @Mikeny,

The Keynesian policies did do much to prolong the economic plight in the 30s.

The present situation of the US economy is in no way comparable: zero savings, heavy current account deficits, an industry which has been largely hollowed out. When the $ tanks, with a money press running full throttle, an inflationnary spiral will kick in through imported product prices, much like in Germany in the early 20s (it's factories had been mostly leveled during WWI).

The quick fixes the Fed is administering the economy, through money printing, will ultimately lead to an economic overdose. Oh, we are there...

From a practical standpoint, to weather what some are already calling the Greater depression, the logical conclusion is to have physical assets (precious metals, commodity base stocks, land, real estate once prior excesses are rung out. My best guess is the stock market will bottom by the end of the year.
  35. ubrewme
There's a huge difference between the economy during the Depression and the economy now. That should not even be used for comparison.
The stocks bottoming out would be the best option. That is how, historically, the economy has corrected itself. It allows everything to return to the level it should be at. How do you think the Dow got to where it is?
  36. csiunatc
    Obama said on thursday:

""Things two years ago were not as good as we thought because there were a lot of underlying weaknesses in the economy. They're not as bad as we think they are now."

This from the man who has been yelling the sky is falling for 50 days straight.

He isn't on the right track. And if he was, it wouldn't be on purpose, because he simply has no idea what he is doing or where he is going.
    1. becthomasphotograp
I saw that. Bill Clinton told him he shouldn't be so negative so apparently Obama is trying to reverse his course from the sky is falling to it's all good.
    2. csiunatc
Like I said, he has no idea where he is going. It's all talk based on what he thinks people want to hear.
  37. ubrewme
You nailed it on the head. It's a popularity contest for him!
  38. lnclark1950
    No!

Our founding fathers made the presidency in such a way that if he or she are not truly behind the ideas of "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" that they can fail and be voted out.

Mr. Obama's idea of change is to turn everything about America that has made it great into everything that made the old Soviet Russia, China, and Cuba negative.

Our founding father knew that less government interference in the lives of the people meant more freedom for the masses. They believed in people more than they believed in government.

From that stand point I believe Mr. Obama is either not a very good student of history or he knows the history and feels he can be king.

In a nut shell here is what God said about kings: 1 Samuel 8: 10-17
He will take your children for his army and he will take everything good you have and leave you the leftovers.
  39. satijournal
Yes. So far, in his first 100 days in office, here is what he has accomplished:

    * Suspended last-minute federal regulations pushed through by Bush that allowed development of wilderness areas and loosened other environmental regulations
    * Enacted a pay freeze for Senior White House Staff making more than $100,000/year.
    * Restricted lobbyist's influence in the White House (which he had to issue wavers already)
    * Suspending all the ongoing proceedings at Guantanamo and ordered it to be shut down within the year.
    * Required the Army Field Manual to be used as guide for terror interrogations, which banned the use of torture.
    * Ordered the Department of Transportation to establish higher fuel efficiency standards
    * Ended the ban of funds to international groups that provide abortion services or counseling.
    * Signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act
    * Signed the Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act (CHIP)
    * Signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
    * Opened up funding for embryonic stem cell research
  40. michaelwillow
Yes he is on the right track. I think that people are just afraid of the change. And this is a normal human reaction. However when the 70pc of the population supports his plan, then the rest has to accept that and stop this aggressive opposition. This is how the democracy works. Things would be much better if the Republicans wouldn't try to do everything possible to delay his plans.

No. If you want a socialist country, then he is on the right track. I do not; therefore, he is not on the right track.
  45. LadySwan
o.k. for one thing, I will always support Pres Bush even though I did not agree with everything he did and no one can tell me otherwise. As for Obama, I hope he is on the right track but he scares me to death. Why is he supporting projects such as finding ways to reduce the smell of pigs on farms. That's what I call pork spending. And all this money being printed, who's paying for it? Guess who! I can only hope that he will prove my doubts wrong because after all, he is my president (is it time to hide under the bed yet)
    1. MyohMy
      Couldn't agree more!
  46. harveyavatar
I guess you haven't understood financial capitalism and environmental socialism are the two sides of the same globalist (gold) coin.
  47. HeadStones
first he says no pig ears and know he says big ears are ok if it helps the state or country. sorry can not have it both ways. you eather have them or not. And he also said he would let each bill be on the internet for 5 days before he voted on it so people could look it over before he sinds it. He is not fallowing what he promised and is changing like a two headed coin. so I would have to say I do not like what he is doing so far. And he scares me along with everyone els in the White House.
  48. ubrewme
At some point, people are going to have to open their eyes. Again, I say, this is not Republicans vs. Democrats.
Obama will get some things right, despite himself, but overall, his being in office is a mistake.
We can argue back and forth all day long......the proof will be in the days to come.
    1. beinki
There does seem to be an anti-stimulus movement in the form of "TEA PARTIES" in fact I shot a video of one in my hometown last week
beinki.blogspot.com/2009/03/columbia-mo-tea-party.html The M.C. tells a story of a young lady ordering a ton of food at McDonalds and when asked to pay for it,said, "I don't need money, Obama was just elected."
    2. meridance
I was wondering why you feel Obama being in office is a mistake. Who do think would have been better and why?
  49. prodigalson35
    we're all banking on him...
  50. satijournal
He's doing what is necessary to mop up the mess left by the previous administration.
    1. Agit8r

      administrationS
    3. ubrewme
I think the proper response there is "ADMINISTRATIONS". As much as you and others would like to blame Bush for all the "evils of the world", you can't.
This is an accumulation of many administrations.
Change is coming, though. Just watch how disastrous this administration is.
    4. FaithfulinPrayer
I agree with you. This problem has nothing to do with one administration. It has everything to do with the Federal Reserve and Keynesian economics. You cannot spend your way to prosperity. I also feel lobbyists and well-funded special interests groups are running this country.
  51. lynnh96005
You can blame the previous administration just so long.
    1. xmarks
Some Republicans blamed the current financial crisis on Jimmy Carter. I think Obama deserves a few more weeks .
    2. satijournal
Yeah, it's been almost two months. Why hasn't he fixed the economy yet?
  52. SaintSeanzy
I'd say it's to early to tell..
  53. maxisangry
It doesn't matter what Obama does or doesn't do. There is no track anymore. It went under with Lehman Brothers. We're all screwed anyway.

Let's fix this the American way: invade another country. Canada's looking mighty tempting.
    1. LaMirabelle
We're busy with strikes right now. Could be a good time
  54. beinki
He's way off track. The Federal Reserve said today they will buy up to $300 billion long-term government bonds and didn't raise key interest rate! Yet the DOW only rose 90 points. Not much confidence coming from wall street.
    finance.yahoo.com/news/Fed-to-buy-up-to-300B-apf-14679757.html
    1. xmarks
DOW is up something like 6 out of 7 days. Looking at the last 6 months, that is fairly unusual.
    2. harveyavatar
The Fed is on the right track to obliterate the $.
  55. jvogler
Depends on which track your referring to...
  56. LaMirabelle
    Yes he is.
But I am not a US citizen.
  57. NatetheGrate
Sure. Stimulating the economy will restore growth. The only question is how, and distributing a lot of the money based on need is the fairest way to do it. Of course, bailing out reckless financial institutions would appear to be counterproductive, but I'm willing to accept that sometimes it's necessary to keep a lot of the system in place. I actually hope it works, not like those insane Obama haters who don't want him to succeed. If the plan fails, we're all in trouble.
  58. conservativerant
What's in the package? Pork. Socialism. Tax hikes. Money for ACORN. Any other questions?
  59. harveyavatar
Let's keep it simple: "the final outcome of a credit bubble is a general impoverishement". Ludwig Von Mises.
  60. ubrewme
What? No one wants to comment on the recent developments from Obama and his productive crew?
You know, if Obama would give Americans the trillions of dollars he is pissing off, we could get the economy back on track.
    1. Anok
You know, if Obama would give Americans the trillions of dollars he is pissing off, we could get the economy back on track.

If the trillions of dollars being spent right now were giving to the populace, each person wouldn't receive enough money to save up or spend on anything, thus not helping the economy at all.

Each person might get up to $3k. Oooh. What are they going to stimulate with that? That wouldn't last two months where I live.
  61. ubrewme
My point is: it would be safer in our hands than it is in theirs. That's how it would stimulate the economy. We would spend it where it needs to be spent.
Do you want all your money going to these companies who are clearly abusing it? I don't!
I mean, come on, how can you defend that? We are bailing out idiots who are concerned with their pocketbooks and fun time. They couldn't care less about any of us!
    1. Anok
As much as I hate the money going towards greedy companies, economically speaking it isn't "safer" in our hands - because we wouldn't spend it.

If I remember correctly, the amount of money given to companies would work out to approximately $3k per person in the US (including children). SO let's say you have a family of three - they would get $9k. That's just barely a 3 month cushion. Since the companies the parents work for are facing bankruptcy or outright closure - the parents would take that money, and bank it, saving for their inevitable lay off.

When you combine the $3k per month, with unemployment (which would also be lacking in funds since the money went to us instead), they might have enough to make it 6 months before going bankrupt. In which case, the money we had would be gone, the companies would have downsized or gone out of business altogether, no one would be hiring, and we'd be in a worse situation than before.

Financially speaking, it doesn't make any sense to give out small amounts of money to individuals, when the employment they need will go away because the companies have no money.

It's like this - let's say you get a windfall of money, and you have 5 credit cards or loans that need paying. you have only enough money from that windfall to either, pay off 3 of the loans, pay off one card, and pay down one large loan, or you can pay down all of them.

You need to work it so that you seriously reduce your monthly payments, so that you can continue paying on the lines of credit.

Do you throw small amounts of money towards all of the debts? This will only make a small dent in the lines of credit, and won't change the monthly payments.

Or do you pay off one or two small debts completely, and thump a large payment to principle on a third, thus lowering your monthly payment on that one, and completely ridding yourself of two other payments? (Or any variation of focusing the money on one, two or three lines of credit).

If you got your hands on $100k, would you pay off the mortgage on your home - thus lowering your monthly payments by an entire mortgage payment, or would you throw that money into several accounts, only making a dent in the debts, while not lowering your overall monthly expenses?
    2. satijournal
Until consumer confidence is restored, handing out money won't do much to stimulate the economy as we saw from the government checks sent out a few years ago. Jobs are what is needed, and the stimulus bill creates jobs. But more important, the public sees that our government is doing something productive, which may translate into consumer confidence.

The stock market is rallying, and that's a good leading indicator that the economy may be on the road to recovery.
  62. beinki
3/30/01 oops..The dow tanks 254 points on news that Obama is taking over Government Motors. I mean General Motors. That's real stimulus for you. More cheese noodles anyone?
    1. xmarks
Oh come on. Dow was up for three weeks and you did give any credit to Obama and then it goes down one day and it is Obama's fault. It seems that your arguements are a little predetermined.
    2. MyohMy
oh please. Did the dow really go up that much? Were the news company's rejoicing because the economy is now rescued? No, nothing significant at all.
    3. xmarks
It went up around 20% in three weeks. You have to go back to 1938 to see three weeks in a row with as strong performance. My point wasn't that Obama has saved the economy. He hasn't. My point is you get a bunch of Obama haters blaiming Obama whenever the dow goes down but they seem to disappear when it goes up.
    4. MyohMy
      Gotcha. I apologize then.
    5. csiunatc
You mean kinda how the Obamarama crowd was hooraying that world leaders was supporting him, but not one of them is talking about how pretty much the whole world is saying his fiscal policy is on the wrong track now.

Or how the entire decline is Bushs fault, but that we should think of any upswing as Obama?

The economy is still going down, jobs are being lost every week, January numbers showed that house prices dropped again 20%

That the dow does a dead cat bounce isn't exactly great news proclaiming anything. The volatility on it is what is the real interesting story. Not even major investors are buying long term right now, they are all trying to catch the swings. It's a complete zoo.

What parts of the economy that is reacting to old problems, and what parts are reacting to new problems right now is getting harder and harder to determine. In another year, Obamaniacs will still scream that everythign is Bush's fault.
    6. xmarks
Both sides have those that blame the bad news on the other guy and the good news to their own.

Interestingly though I don't hear Bush's name much anymore unless it is from a far righter claiming the far lefters are blaming everything on Bush.
    7. csiunatc
DO you have to hear his name to know what people are talking about when the lefties are talking about

Inherited problems, Failed policies, and every other remark as to how they are going to be "different"... Did you think they were talking about Clinton?
  63. cil
For me, Obama is doing well. Just hoping his strategy will help the economy back in right place.
    1. beinki
By doing well, do you mean you still have a job? Because Private employers cut jobs by a record 742,000 in March. I don't see much stimulus here.

This is the problem. The government thinks that the crisis is only because the supply of loans is lessened. They don't understand fully that the middle class has been hit badly and that the demand for loans is also on the wain. Unless they quit bailing out the banks and start a real stimulus program, we will have chaos. The alt a, option arm and commercial real estate loans will be in big trouble starting in late 2009 through early 2012.
  65. jasongallimore
Absolutely he is on the right track. Considering the depth and breadth of issues that we are faced with at the moment, I think he has done remarkably well. His temperment and calm spirit also help to quell a great deal of the anger and frustrations that Americans are feeling at the moment. Also, it is very soon to be making such assessments considering he has been in office less than 3 months! For the latest in progressive commentary and news check out The Common Progressive.

Personally I fear the obama plan. I think he has and is masterminding a plan of government control policies along with his personal agenda that could very possibly destroy this country.

On another note, a comment made on Politico: Biden said "obama would be tested within the first six months of taking office"...little did he know it would come from Four Skinny Africans In A Fishing Boat!

  68. jasongallimore
I feel that President Obama has overpromised and under-delivered, however he cannot be blamed for the current political climate. Never before has a new President had such a wide range of pressing issues to address and I think that the Obama team miscalculated the push back they would receive. Having said that, I think that the administration realizes this and is making great efforts to shift the political winds to a more favorable direction for the White House. Also, it has only been 8 months, give the guy a break!
