On Nov 4th, I traveled to Chicago to Grant Park to be there when Sen. Obama gave his address. It was one of the most fantastic events I've ever been to. After it was over, I COULDN'T WAIT to begin planning to attend the 2009 Presidential Inauguration! I have a bus trip going to the Inauguration in January that people can either join in Washington DC, join one of our existing buses in Memphis, Jackson, Atlanta, Texas, New Orleans, etc. or even get their own group of 40 or more people together of out their city, and go free. This year, the Presidential Inauguration will be unlike any in the past. It is going to be UNBELIEVABLE! Right now, 1.5 million are expected to attend. Are you planning to go to the Inauguration? Would you like to? I want to BE THERE when history is made!

I live in DC, so I plan to go, but this place could be totally mobbed. I'm gonna need to do some planning to get around the city. And I wonder if I'll even be able to hear the man speak, though I should think planners are working out the details of how far out into the Mall they need to provide audio and video.

The last one I visited was Clinton in 1996. I thought that that one was crowded, but this one is going to be unreal. (I took in the Bush inaugurations from home. Couldn't bring myself to go downtown.)

They should be planning for the huge crowds. I wonder how early we'll have to leave the hotel in order to not face tremendous traffic. I understand that our motorcoaches will not be able to come into DC at all. We'll be dropped off at the metro to come into DC. Any tips for us for this event?

Have a street map, snacks, water, and a strong bladder. You might want handiwipes too, in case you're stuck using portapotties. And allow yourself time. I know in 1996 I was irritated because the police also restricted where we could cross the rode in places. It got downright crowded. But it was also a festive atmosphere. Americans generally know how to act behave during these kinds of things.

You should also get your hands on a Washington Post, if they're not sold out because of the headline. Get a copy for practical reasons. There will be an inauguration section in it with practical information about the parade route, the areas open to the public for the speeches, and so on.

Plan on any kind of weather too. Sometimes this city acts like it's part of the south, and sometimes it thinks its a northern city.

OOh these are great tips! Thanks. I'll definitely try to get a paper. I got about 5 of the Chicago papers!

lola is too far away 8(

    Naaaaa... I'm not into crowds.
    1. clioandme
It will take an act of will for me, because I hate the crush of crowds. But I also want to see these crowds. It's the crazy American people that really makes the show.
  4. TheBigRuski
I was thinking about it....until you started SHOUTING AT ME!
    1. TheTravelQueen
Oh please forgive me!!! You surely don't want to miss this. It will be one of the greatest events of our time.
  5. Anok
I would love to, but it's just not feasible for us right now. I will watch it on TV, though.
  6. KBB
I think I will stay home. I will tivo it for sure.
  7. voodooKobra
I'm going to be in DC at the time, so yes.
    1. Anok
      Watchyou doin' up this way?
    2. voodooKobra
My dad's motorcycle club is having a late New Year's Eve party in Maryland.
    3. Anok
      Oh, that sounds like fun.

You guys should swing up this way The Mr and I are always up for apolar bear run!
    4. voodooKobra
Heh. As much as I'd like to, my parents will be sick enough of traveling after this January trip. Then over Spring Break, my mom wants us to fly out to Cali to see my great grandma before she dies.

After that, and after I get my $15k check, I'll be free to travel where ever I want.
    5. Anok
That's OK, I should really wait until I have my own bike anyway
    6. voodooKobra
      Anarchist ninja biker? Awesome.
    7. Anok
Well, I'm still bit squeamish on a motorcycle yet - I have to practice. (I'm good on the back of one, though). Of course, I was taught on a giant 125 motocross bike, and not a regular motorcycle (Those things are terrifying when you can't touch the ground!!!)

I just need to design a tiny bike just for me
  8. jan4insight
That kind of travel is out of the question for me, but I will definitely be following the day closely.

My tip: bundle up. It can get cold in DC at that time of year.

I remember attending JFK's inauguration when I was about 12 years old. There was a major snowstorm in DC the day before, and they literally had to call out the Army to get snow cleared off the main streets. But the inauguration day was clear and bright, Penn. Ave was cleared of snow, and it was a great day. I think many of us who were around for JFK will be thinking back on that era, even as we know Obama's day will be magnified many times.

I may be too busy doing makeup to even get to go the festivities. :/ But it's okay, I'll still be involved in some way.

The Washington Post reports planning for 4 million visitors to the mall, more than ever before. www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/11/17/AR2008111703672.ht...
I'm going to have to get over my thing about enormous crowds, cause I want to see this. I figure I'll just come prepared to walk back to my DC apartment, if I have to. It's far, but not out of the question. Course, Metro is planning for a whole lot of people too.
    1. satijournal
That's going to be an amazing celebration. I'd go if I lived there, or if I was 20 years younger and still liked to drink. Or if there was a public stoning of Bush while he was leaving the White House.
    2. TheBigRuski
Or if there was a public stoning of Bush while he was leaving the White House.

      See:

    3. satijournal
Yeah, stoning him might be a little harsh. Maybe a public flogging would be better.
    4. TheBigRuski
      But, of course!

      That's a natural!
    5. clioandme
Knowing a chopper is carrying him to Andrews Airforce Base will be good enough for me.
    6. satijournal
He ought to be taken to Guantanamo.
    7. TheBigRuski
Come on guys! Are we getting 60-plus days of these last kicks in? You guys are REALLY enjoying this...again, kind of proves my point.
    8. Anok
Bush is so dumb, he got fired from his first job at an M&M factory for throwing out all the Ws.

    9. clioandme
Better get some cartooning in, Ben, while you still have this subject.
    10. satijournal
Yeah, it's been over two months since I drew my last one. I got too busy with work.
  11. theboyjlowe
i'll pass. I went to the Bush inauguration and it was freezing.
  12. TheBigRuski
I hear Bruce Springsteen, U2, and 7/8 of The Beatles are giving a concert on the White House Lawn.
    1. 210betty
      You said "Not"!
  13. lisamcglaun
Will be watching from my living room wishing I was there.
    1. clioandme
Shouting is not cool. Scamming isn't either. But both at the same time?
  14. TheTravelQueen
Hopefully, what we're getting will be the real deal tickets for the people going on our bus tours. We've requested them directly from our congressman, as have most of the people who are going to the inauguration with us. I think this thing is gonna be SLAMMIN'!
    1. clioandme
Only about 250,000 people will have tickets. Most of us are gonna be on the Mall. They're setting up jumbotrons.
  15. rightcommentary
I live in the DC area... and my house is for rent... 20K a week for any of you Obama-ites... if it makes you feel any better... I'll say "hope and change" as I'm cashing your big fat check... you can consider it a prelude to paying more taxes...
  16. clioandme
Some rules and other details about the inauguration are now coming out. For instance, you cannot stake out a space to watch until after 7:00 a.m. on the day in question. Here's more: www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/12/11/AR2008121103496.ht...
