They are more alike than different and the line between them is blurred.

There is no difference between them...Both blame each other for the woes of the world and offer no solutions other than increased taxes on their citizens...

LOL I keep thinking when I read your title...well rep means representative, and demo is short for demonstration...

There was, at one time some pretty distinct differences - such as Republicans being fiscally conservative, wanting less government intervention (and fewer social programs), where as Democrats were more liberal in spending matters, and favored more government intervention in certain areas, and more government based social programs etc...

Now it seems that spending is nearly the same, priorities are the same, the want or need for governmental intervention is on the same level (but for different reasons)...the only differences I have seen lately is that the Democrats seem to be more concerned with going green (some, not all) and social and civil issues and rights - whereas the loudest republicans have actually gone conservative in the sense of "traditional values" re: religious values with regards to legislation.

    But that's just me.

The basic difference between the two is: republicans don't think the government can do any good and the democrats think the government can. As Reagan said, "The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, I'm from the government and I'm here to help."

That's where eh line gets blurred, though.

I have seen too many republicans say that the government can't do any good.....if they are speaking of social programs. But when it comes to banning something they are concerned about, they're all over it.

      *shrugs*

That's true, too. It's from the religious right where they believe people are basically bad and need the government to protect us from ourselves.

The only real difference between the two is which corporate masters they serve. Repubs prefer more old style like oil while the Dems prefer newer Media empires.

Aside from a few minor differences, their core beliefs are basically the same. Discourage democratic public participation in govt. and put all decission making and public policy in the hands of the controlling elite who get their way by sending their congressmen and senators to Washington to do their business for them.

One slight difference however, is that after manipulating the system and pludering all they can, Dems like to leave some crumbs for the general population to fight over and also keep things from getting so bad that they actually have to worry about rioting in the streets on the way to their limosuine.

Repubs on the other hand don't want to even leave a crumb and are so confident with the propaganda model used here that they try to beat down any remaining thought of equality and Democracy. For example "Government is the Problem" or "Get govt. off our backs", well being that some form of organization or order is needed for a true democracy to work, these sort of ideas eventually come to mean and are applied as 'get this damn democratic process out of our way so we rich bastards can do what we want.'

Their goals and purpose are just about the same. Thats why whenever someone comes along that might be able to break through this system he is quicly labeled a 'loon' 'nut' or 'spoiler'

One has their left hand in your wallet, the other uses their right hand.

Democrat's intentions are to help the poor and middle class -- republicans want to help the wealthy. It's supply side economics vs. demand side.

Republicans want government to be small enough to fit in your bedroom, and big enough to pave the way for corporate welfare and take-over of just about everything.

As for me, "I don't belong to any organized political party. I'm a Democrat."

Will Rogers said that many years ago, and it's still (largely) true!

You're right! That's why democrats have such a hard time winning elections.

The basic difference between the current democrats and republicans is that democrats believe in balance, while republicans believe that in straight line thinking.

Supply side economics would have worked if it was balanced, but the republicans in charge pushed it far as possible and now it crashing down on us.
    1. jan4insight
Whether it was supply side economics or anything else, the Repub's ideology was nothing but a house of cards built up to justify corporate greed.

@jnvscnln: That's what I've noticed during the Bush administration in particular, though it was there at least since Reagan: an intense ideological orientation that was not all that interested in pragmatic responses to specific issues.
