In a move that is sure to make bleeding heart liberals angrier than a wet cat, the President has decided to throw habeas corpus out the window. What an outrage! I mean this is terrible. How can Bush do this??
Wait - I misspoke. Obama is making this decision. Not Bush. Sorry libs, you are gonna hafta blame, erm, uh, Obama.

Leahy, the perennial lapdog for the far left said this about Bush during a luncheon speech at the American Constitution Society national convention in Washington, D.C., in June of 2008.
"In Boumediene v. Bush, the Supreme Court did the right thing in the detainee case upholding the great writ of habeas corpus."
He went on to say this -
"How many times have we criticized countries that have held people incommunicado?" he asked rhetorically. "What do you think the image is of our great and wonderful country abroad when other countries see the United States operating the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay? I want to be able to reintroduce the U.S.A. to the rest of the world, when they can see us doing what we should be doing."

I wonder what Senator Leahy will say about this? I mean he did mention it in May of 2009.
" held people for years without even giving them the chance to go to court to argue that they were being held in error -- we have hurt our national security immeasurably."

Wait for it...wait for it...this is appeasement to the hard right. The administration was more than happy to move forward with closing Gitmo, and holding the prisoners here until they were properly tried.
The article you provided stated that the money set to pay for the detention here was denied (not by Obama), thus forcing the administration to either not close Gitmo as promised, or hold them here, but indefinitely, all of which are points that the hard right supports.
I will be very unahppy if Obama signs off on the right's clumsy attempt to force their hand, and not follow through with proper trial and conviction methods.-
You're right - however they did it to appease the teabagging right
The amount of propaganda that was put out about the whole thing (terrorists will roam your neighborhoods!) obviously got to someone.
Then again, nancy "you aren't my constituents" Pelosi is an idiot who often does not represent what the constituents actually wants. So I'm not surprised.
I will be angry if Obama caves on this one, though. -
Looks like he is realizing that a lot of what the Bush admin was saying about the difficulties of prosecuting the terrorists is right. You have to be careful in how it is handled. On American soil, in our federal court system, you run the risk of having evidence and testimony that could harm the safety of the country. I think Obama was naive about the whole Gitmo / terror detainee situation. It is nice to repeat platitudes and spout rhetoric about their rights, we don't do that to people (meaning hold them indefinitely), etc... But in reality, he really doesn't have much of a choice.
I think he painted himself into a corner on this one.
