High human impact ocean areas along US West Coast revealed
"Every single spot of the ocean along the West Coast," said Ben Halpern, a marine ecologist at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) at the University of California at Santa Barbara, "is affected by 10 to 15 different human activities annually."

In a two-year study to document the way humans are affecting the oceans in this region, Halpern and colleagues overlaid data on the location and intensity of 25 human-derived sources of ecological stress, including climate change, commercial and recreational fishing, land-based sources of pollution and ocean-based commercial activities.

With the information, they produced a composite map of the status of West Coast marine ecosystems.

Okay, what can be done about it? What should be done about it?

Smarter infrastructure/runoff control would help with land-based pollution

The complexities are the overlapping jurisdictional issues. Unless or until they are all on the same page this will continue.

      as in countries, states, cities?

why don't we just all kill ourselves and then maybe the environmental wackos will be satisfied.

Yeah, that's crazy trying to protect our environment. Wacko stuff!

"Kill ourselves" sounds so bad... why don't we call it becoming carbon neutral

Seriously though, my environmental philosophy is simple: you don't poop in your kitchen sink!

why don't we just all kill ourselves and then maybe the environmental wackos will be satisfied.

Why would we choose to kill ourselves when the primary directives of any and all living organisms is to survive and reproduce?

[sarcasm] Maybe we should continue to poison the air we breathe, and the earth that we grow our plant foods in and raise our livestock on, and the water we drink, as well as, the water rivers, streams, aquifers and oceans that we rely on for fish and other aquatic sources of food. Then the anti-environmentalists, who choose to wear blinders, stick their fingers in their ears, and flap their big mouths spouting denial can win the day.

And when our children and grandchildren are faced with a devastated planet that can no longer sustain life, we can explain that we chose to ignore the situation, in order to appease the ignorant anti-environmentalists, rather than taking action to provide their generations with an environmental legacy worth inheriting.[/sarcasm]

ixnay on that "carbon neutral" thing there Agit8r. If someone from Al Gore's entourage reads it, then we could all be in trouble. I can see it now, "An Inconvenient Life"

Lets see it seems to me given exhibit a the ocean, peaceful unassuming, perfect and given exhibit b humans, no regard for anything, wasteful, creators of pollution that the logical answer to this is to get rid of b in order for a to survive.
    1. Agit8r
or we could aquire regard for Nature--not to be wasteful, but rather good stewards of Creation 0_o

      @Agit8r
or we could acquire regard for Nature--not to be wasteful, but rather [become] good stewards ...

That would be the intelligent choice to make, now wouldn't it?

And, as for those who suggest we should ALL kill ourselves I say: "Speak for yourself."

If any or all climate change deniers and/or any or all anti-environmentalists wish to commit suicide then I won't interfere with their choice.
