Political Discussions

Can anyone find ONE HONEST POLITICIAN in Washington and give us the details with regard to integrity in general, and specifically adressing questions such as, self enrichment, honest use of expense funds, accepting gifts, accepting favorable mortgage and lending rates, etc. Or are they all cheats, some worse than others?

I'm pretty sure that they are human, that means they'll have flaws. They'll make misstakes and they might not always tell the truth.

I am however not at all convinced that they are all corrupt. So as far as humans go, i'm sure that there are "honest" ones up there.

The person that tells you they never lie just told you a whopper..

"HONESTY IN WASHINTON" That's just funny. "OXYMORON" There is no such thing.

There are some very honest people in Washington, at least there are probable percentage wise as many politicians as there are honest people. here are probably a large number with their own agendas who are also honest, overall so much of what we now see as dishonest was really considered normal in Washington, so hopefully that trend and the normalization of it will lessen over time again.

I have respect for Ron Paul's candor, he seems to always say what he thinks, even when it's not the popular thing to say.

Have you read his book called The Revolution? It is very good and I think everyone around here would enjoy it.

Lmao, Yes, but i doubt "everyone here" would enjoy it.

OK. My question on an OXYMORON scale is a 10, but look, people like you and me, our children, grandchildren, have to work to pay politcians salaries. don't we deserve to have trustworthy politicians? They also have the ability to make decisions that can send your children and my children and grandchildren to war. They need to be people, as Csiunatc says, we can repect as well as trust. These politicians also make decisions that can control life and death issues for the whole country. These politicians should have high ethical standards for themselves. They need to be better than the rest of us. If 90% of the country in white collar jobs are stealing pencils from the office, I think they shouldn't be elected. Why? Because politicians make laws that send people to jail for stealing.

I couldn't agree with you more ruth. I think we should take money out of the equation. You know for (campeigning, lobbying and such). I think we should cut the paychecks and benefits to our politicians. Then we could see who truely wants to be a public servant.

The only people who could afford to work for nothing would be the rich, which hardly sounds like a good idea. If you want to take the influence of money out of the equation, look elsewhere. Their paychecks are not corrupting. The real problem is the constant need to raise campaign money, which lays people open to the possibility of influence peddling. In some countries this campaign fundraising is illegal. Instead the government pays for the campaigning. In Germany, for instance, each party gets an amount based on their electoral returns, as long as they got more than 5% of the vote. The system works pretty well.

I agree with Ruth2008. I would love to see our public servants have more integrity. It's shameful what politics has come to. We need some true American heros in this country.

We can't really expect them all to be perfect. What we should expect is those at the top to get rid of those that show their inability to live by the rules they create.

Not reward them with cabinet posts.

Maybe we could get saints to serve in the cabinet. They could come back from the dead after they have a proven track record of making miracles. The only hard part would be getting the pope to go along with it.

We needed a good laugh at this point in time, so thanks to M'man. However, hmmm, after the laughter, it really doesn't help establish values for those of us who see ethical behavior as a requisite for leaders in whom we place our futures.
