It's fun to see all these weird expectations some people have of Obama. He's supposed to make miracles and presto. Poor guy.
Like Robin Hood!
I wrote an article on this : "Barack Obama & Sherwood Forest / Bobby Jindal & Mardi Gras World"

"So Barack Obama is the new Messiah in the USA? Halleluia Ok he's the first black president but he's actually expected to solve the Nation's problems in a blink (yes he blinks), to rob the rich to give the poor. Mmmh that reminds me of someone...Oh right: Robin Hood! You know the guy with..."

How exactly is he robbing the rich?

During the Bush administration, the top 1% saw their incomes go up some 600% while middle class wages fell. At the same time, our national debt doubled. It's time to rid our country of the radical right-wing policies that created the enormous debt and caused the current economic crisis.
    1. jhixon2
And thus implement an even bigger national debt with 1.5 trillion within the first 2 months? Doesn't look like the liberal point of view has helped anything either. He is robin hood, screw the rich and give it to the poor. Thats a huge reason to why he got elected.People want money blatantly given to them just because they are poor like a socialist nation. That really accomplishes alot. I mean the rich do absolutely nothing to stimulate the economy. They just employ people, create new jobs, and play a big role in our economy.

So Republicans hate Robin Hood now? Who's next? Zorro? That pointed-headed elite academic Indiana Jones?
    3. Agit8r
According to Republicans, Zorro is stealing your job and making your kids' school teach Spanish!
    4. xmarks
      Zorro is an illegal alien.
  2. Anok
Pffft I WISH he was Robin Hood.

    Man that would be cool
  3. LaMirabelle
It's irony Satijournal. Isn't this the standard mantra of Republicans?
    1. satijournal
Comments made by republicans are so ridiculous, it's hard to tell if it's satire or their actual opinions.
  4. Agit8r
Obama is a likeable guy (aside from blurring the line b/w church and state). Unfortunately he doesn't buy into America's original Enlighenment Liberalism. Instead he's going with this socially acceptable socialism--the third way. Unfortunately it doesn't steal from the Aristoi, but leaves Le Tiers Etat to fend for one another, while the Theresa Hienz Kerry's get to keep their wealth!
  5. jan4insight
Well, as seen on the Daily Show recently, he's either Hitler or the AntiChrist ....
  6. jhixon2
3.5 trillion dollar budget plus the stimulus. hmmm that national debt is almost eclipsed Bush's already
    1. xmarks
uhmmm . . . Bush (and congress) left a mess that needs to be cleaned up. That takes some money.
    2. jhixon2
i guess we should ignore the entire history of the stock market and how it usually fixes itself. makes sense?
    3. Anok
You mean like how it didn't fix itself prior to the great depression?

      Yeah, that worked out great!
    4. jhixon2
Roosevelt was the reason why the depression was so long.
    5. Anok
      Sure he was

Regardless of you assumption, the markets did not, in fact, regulate themselves and we wound up in a damn fine pickle.
    6. csiunatc
Of course they didn't. Gov't regulations and legislation prevented them from doing it.
    7. Agit8r
think it's worth noting that the "free market" wasn't all that free during Hoover's administration. There were cartels, corruption, and that lack of the necessary safeguard that markets require. Useful and non-arbitrary regulation. I'm not saying that Roosevelt was the messiah or anything, (what with his introducing regressive taxation on the working folks, and continuing corporatist programs) just dispelling mythology. The New Deal was--according to FDR--"A program whose basic thesis is, not that the system of free enterprise for profit has failed in this generation, but that it has not yet been tried."
    1. satijournal
Or he's an extremely bright man off to a great start, considering the circumstances.
    2. jhixon2
it is hard to be convincing to the American public when all you can do is talk good and not back it up
  7. LaMirabelle
All he can do is talk good?
    1) Obama just got the job. Why don't you wait a little before judging?
    2) Bush didn't do the job and he couldn't even talk good.
    1. jhixon2
Bush was given the same treatment. Why does that make it any different for Obama?
  8. csiunatc
Oh he is doing the job alright. Everytime he opens his mouth. The STock Market tanks

    Nov. 5, 2008 (Wednesday after Election Day): -486 (5.0%)

Jan. 9, 2009 (one day after Obama speaks at George Mason University on “need” for $800 billion stimulus package): -143 (1.6%)

    Jan. 20, 2009 (Inauguration Day): -332 (4.0%)

Feb. 10, 2009 (one day after Obama declares that without a stimulus, “an economy that is already in crisis will be faced with a catastrophe”): -382 (4.6%)

Feb. 17, 2009 (market opens for the first time after Congress passes $787 billion stimulus on Feb. 13; Obama signs bill into law, declaring, “The stimulus lets Americans claim destiny.”): -298 (3.8%)

Feb. 19, 2009 (one day after Obama announces potential mortgage relief plan): -90 (1.2%)

Feb. 25, 2009 (one day after Obama’s first speech to the full Congress): -80 (1.1%)

Here is a little collection of articles that have noted this correlation.

That may be true, but the stock market short term activity is not a good indicator of economic well being. The market rallies when unemployment numbers are higher than expected because that means they can pay lower wages, which translates into higher profits.
    2. csiunatc
Yes it rallies at high unemployment. But not because of lower wages.

It rallies because high unimployment is a traditional marker for low inflation. And with low inflation, beating k-star is easier to achieve, which makes investing in stock more appealing.
    3. xmarks
csi: we are talking about a period of major daily swings. Since the fall most of these swings have been downward. That's true even before the vote. To take this analysis seriously, you have to put it in proper context.
  9. homestaydad
Mr. Obama is yet anothe puppet in the hands of the Fed and the Elite. He will do what they will ask him to do. He will play by their rules...
    > Increasing the military spendings.
    > Increasing the troops in Afghanistan.
    > Printing worthless money.

I'm sorry he is far away from being a Robin Hood.
  10. LaMirabelle
    1) My article is ironic (Republicans don't get irony)
    2) Wait and see. To criticize now is pointless and nobody will listen.

If the stockmarket tanks something's wrong with the stockmarket (that's why it's so easy to manipulate the market by spreading any kind of rumour like soandso is very sick etc...)
  11. LaMirabelle
Ma no, questo non è vero!

By the way. I've just added a chatbox on my blog (right column)
If you want to talk to me or to each other (or your neighbor), go ahead anytime.
Whoever's online will show for example as "guest345677" so if you and your neighbor are on my website you can chat with each other.
You don't have to identify yourselves but be nice
It seems to be a fun widget

I guess you're trying to poke fun at the enormous expectations being placed on him; however, some might overlook that and go straight to the robbing-the-rich-to-give-to-the-poor part. The latter is nonsense, since the poor get to bail out the propertied and their banking system, and they will do so, because things would be even worse otherwise.

Sometimes it's hard to tell between a parody of a republican and a real republican. For example:

SEN. DAVE SCHULTHEIS, R-Colorado Springs, on Wednesday voted againt Senate Bill 179, which requires pregnant women to undergo HIV testing to ensure steps can be taken to reduce transferring the disease to the baby if the mother is infected.

    * What he said during the debate: "This stems from sexual promiscuity for the most part and I just can't go there. We do things continually to remove the consequences of poor behavior, unacceptable behavior, quite frankly. I'm not convinced that part of the role of government should be to protect individuals from the negative consequences of their actions."

    * What he said afterward: "What I'm hoping is that yes, that person may have AIDS, have it seriously as a baby and when they grow up, but the mother will begin to feel guilt as a result of that. The family will see the negative consequences of that promiscuity and it may make a number of people over the coming years ... begin to realize that there are negative consequences and maybe they should adjust their behavior. We can't keep people from being raped. We can't keep people from shooting each other. We can't keep people from jumping off bridges. People drink and drive, and they crash and kill people. Poor behavior has its consequences."
