Is Rahm Emanuel a Patriot?

In White House Cheif of Staff Rahm Emanuel's "The Plan (Big Ideas for America)" he gives us a glimpse of his idea of patriotism:
"We want the government to be aggressive in protecting us from terrorists. But we want a government that's just as serious about challenging us as citizens... It's time for a real Patriot Act that brings out the patriot in all of us. We propose universal civilian service for every young American. Under this plan, all Americans between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five will be asked to serve their country by going through three months of basic training, civil defense preparation and community service"
Just like in the country whose military HE served!

I think if the Right had a prominent politician who served in the Israeli army Republicans would have drooled their balls off.

Countries should only employ mandatory military service as an absolute last resort to self-defense. Israel is a nation which obviously requires such a military. The United States on the other hand does not. Volunteer armed forces prove more effective in the long run (and more sustainable) than large conscripted armies. First is the cost. To build the equipment and get the supplies needed to supply an exponentially expanded military would be astronomical. If people are complaining about the DoD budget now, just wait till the draft is reinstated. Remember, the soldiers need clothes, guns, ammunition, computers and related (and expensive) technologies, tanks, ammunition, doctors, expensive medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, and food just to list some things. Just to say that the government is going to reinstate the draft means nothing unless they can supply the equipment to make it possible. More importantly though I do not think the government should be forcing anyone to serve in the military. I believe it is the greatest enslavement our government could place on the American people. Forcing their own population to put their lives on the line when our country is no real immediate military threat is unacceptable.

@NewBlogger
You should click the link a read before posting. "Mandatory military service" is not what he is proposing. It's not a "draft" and it's not "military" either. He's not asking anyone to put their "lives on the line" in exchange for college help.
The right will distort this concept just like many others.

Although many many countries employ mandatory military enlistment, I actually agree with almost everything NewBlogger said above.
Voluntary is key - and I for one would not want someone who is anti-military, or a peaceful resister/protester to be enlisted, trained, and potentially have to have my back in a conflict situation. Not everyone is cut out for the military, and I don't know that they should be forced to undergo such training when it's clear they will never enlist voluntarily, furthermore, unlike smaller countries, the US is so huge, we have no need to be able to call up every man woman and child to defend our country.
Now, if they wanted to implement a mandatory year of waiting tables....
