Political Discussions

Over the past few months political pundits have blasted John McCain and his advisors for running a terrible campaign. While some of the criticism regarded the lack of energy and inspiration that the campaign generated, much of the general disdain had to do with John McCain’s refusal to attack Obama for his obvious incompetence. In fact, the great motivation behind Rush Limbaugh’s “Operation Chaos” was that the Clintons were willing to attack Obama, but the McCain camp was not.

John McCain’s new campaign advertisements, however, appear to be relieving all the concern that has accumulated over the past few months. One of the best examples of this is the new assault on Barack Obama’s energy plan, which sadly is nothing more than inflating our tires.

He sure has. I have no doubt his policies will be just as successful as those of George W. Bush.

More war! Higher energy prices! More weakening of the Bill of Rights (except for the only amendment that counts, the 2nd)! An even greater increase in the gap between the ultra rich and everybody else! More destruction of our environment! More ignoring global warming! Wahoo!

On the transcendent issues, the most important issues of our day, I've been totally in agreement and support of President Bush
    John McCain

Yeah, I thought he was different, but he sure has been working hard to convince me otherwise, If that's him hitting his stride, so be it.

Higher energy prices are a direct result of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid making it illegal to drill. The second we start to drill, the price will go down.
    3. techfun
      ummm No.

It was George H. W. Bush with the help of an earlier congress that put the restrictions on offshore drilling - not Reid and Pelosi.

      Idiot huh? Nice rhetoric.

      Check out www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/07/14/bush.offshore/

"Bush's father, President George H.W. Bush, signed the executive order in 1990 banning offshore drilling."

There is an interesting piece in the NY Times today about McCain's leadership style within his own campaign. www.nytimes.com/2008/08/10/us/politics/10mccain.html?ex=1376107200&en=dbc07...

"One of the best examples of this is the new assault on Barack Obama’s energy plan, which sadly is nothing more than inflating our tires."

That's a blatant lie. It's sad that so many people will lie to defend their party. They love their party more than they love their country.
    1. Advocate123
“we could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling." He damn well meant what he said.
  4. Wisco
Actually, the assertion that Obama's plan in nothing more than inflating your tires is BS on McCain's part (my.barackobama.com/page/content/newenergy). In fact, McCain's big ad blitz is proving him to be nothing short of a lying POS. As far as I can find, McCain has yet to put out a truthful ad (griperblade.blogspot.com/2008/07/mccains-low-road.html).

It's sad that people are lazy and gullible enough to fall for this crap. And McCain's stride? I sure hope he's hit it, because he's still behind. If he can keep up this pace until November, he'll take the silver. Polling shows that Obama's state by state lead translates to 289 electoral votes today (www.electoral-vote.com/) -- you need 270 to win. If John McCain can just keep up the incredible momentum without losing ground, he'll lose by 19.

    Whoo-hoo! Go McCain '08!
    1. Advocate123
Actually, you need to read what Obama said. “we could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling." That his only plan. The rest of it will do NOTHING to get us more oil.
    2. MadameX
Advocate, is there a reason that you think "getting us more oil" is the best goal? Do you favor sustaining our dependence on oil?
    3. clioandme
Seriously, I didn't realize that getting us more oil was the goal. Course it can't be really, not if we care about the next generation.

Here's a Tom Toles cartoon that highlights the inherent contradiction in all our politicians' rhetoric: www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/opinions/cartoonsandvideos/toles_main.html?na... How can one reduce dependency and reduce prices at the same time? It's impossible. Of course, Obama isn't stupid enough to say that, because that's not what the public wants to hear. Ditto McCain.
    4. Advocate123
Because the 50% of the world will die in a week if we go off oil.

Where do you think all the plastics and synthetic materials come from? How do you think trucks ship food to people?

The reason the price of oil is so high is because it is illegal to drill.

We can no longer worry about oil in the middle East if we get our own.
    5. Wisco
Actually, you need to read what Obama said. “we could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling." That his only plan. The rest of it will do NOTHING to get us more oil.

Actually, we could. If the problem is not enough oil, then something as simple as tire inflation would save more oil in one year than we'd get from offshore drilling (blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/08/politifact-find.html). More oil is more oil. Drilling is comparatively ineffective.

Oops! See, this is why Republicans always screw up the economy -- they suck at math.
    6. Wisco
The reason the price of oil is so high is because it is illegal to drill.

No, it's not. Oil companies have millions of acres that they're leasing and welcome to drill.

More name-calling and personal attacks. This will get your stuff deleted. And it doesn't inspire anyone to want to read your blog. Counterproductive all around.

John McCain is now encouraging his followers to give McCain access to everyone in their address books so he can spam them. And if they don't like it they can unsubscribe, but they'll have to say they support McCain or no longer support McCain. That one never supported McCain is not an option. More doublespeak.

My source is a well written blog post that includes plenty of screenshots: blog.techfun.org/john-mccain-helps-republicans-become-spammers

Thanks for pointing this out, Mark. I'm going to link to it from Rational Outrage (as soon as someone shows up with the technical skills to do that--good thing I'm not running for President). Since JD is, as always, factual and rational, I can only hope that people will read far enough to understand the full scope of what's going on here--at a glance, it doesn't sound so bad, but the details change everything.
    2. clioandme
Exactly. You dig into his details and it looks ugly. I agree about Techfuns tone and thoroughness too. I'm gland he's the one who called our attention to this.
    3. clioandme
You obviously didn't read the post, which is about putting people on the list that didn't want to be there in the first place. And name-calling doesn't make you right either.

Wonder how this came out double.
  7. Advocate123
We must drill here and now if we want the price to go down. End of story.
