Political Discussions

First, I'm surprised that Klein writes fro Alternet - I'm impressed.

But I'm still digesting her commentary here, as well as the comments and arguments below it.

What are your thoughts?

I'm thinking that if the GOP blocks the economic recovery act much longer, Obama is going to need to get back into campaign mode and maybe help build some pressure on those Republican senators who are in states Obama won. Presumably that's going on behind the scenes, but maybe more needs to happen.

In any case, it is absolutely ridiculous for Republicans to pose as saviors right now, when all they are offering are the policies that landed us in this stinking pile of dung in the first place. I'm pretty sure more people see through this too, the kind of people who voted for Obama not to get along with Republicans, but to get things done and effect change. I'm thinking the GOP has been overplaying its hand recently. Obama's conciliatory attitude might have encouraged such behavior, but the GOP is making a bad mistake if they take the president's bipartisan overtures as a sign of weakness.

[Edited to add:] Apropos revolt, did anyone catch the NPR story this morning (I believe) about people denying banks business because of their attitudes towards lending (I think it's in this story, but I might be wrong: www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=100326109)? Obama's salary cap for banks taking public money plays to a similar and justified sentiment that is not just populist, but also makes economic sense.

I missed it - I'll have to catch up.

      Thanks for weighing in, Mark.

To be honest, I'm even sure what her thoughts are. This is way below her normal writing.

Are we sure this is the right Naiomi?

      The bio fits...

But I'm glad I'm not the only one who walked away thinking...so...she's saying she supports...no doesn't support...no, what?
    2. clioandme
Why would an article about what is happening with public support have to express an explicit opinion? Sometimes people just do reporting and offer analysis.

Adding to what I just said, the economy is one area where many commentators are actually willing to admit that they don't have all the answers. I've noticed that a lot lately, even if the same people are willing to take sides on the economic recovery act.

I wasn't looking for a explicit opinion, but I was left wondering what she was trying to say. I would have been happier had she made some connections, or made it longer to expand on her idea. Because there was an idea - it was summed up in the conclusion. But I can't figure out what it was.

Yeah very muddled. Not her usual 1.2.3 clear and concise with a whopping finish.

I see some are still blinded by the Kool-Aid. where is the change and transparency your messiah promised us all ? Do you people really think that this " stimulus " bill that is full of dusty old spending that could not get passed before will really do anything but put us in worse shape than we are in now ? I cannot believe anyone could think this bill as it is written right now thinks it needs to pass. Spend, spend, spend, yeah, big change
    1. csiunatc
Blinded by panic is more like it.

Do something ANYTHING.. is the current mantra.

And you're right, it's not going to do anything but stick us deeper in the hole.
    2. Anok
Make no mistake, the Republicans are just as panicked as the Democrats are.

It isn't really a matter of do "anything" just do "something", it's a matter of doing something that will work in both short term and long term.

The stimulus bill proposed has a lot of perfectly good ideas in it.
    3. lot2learn
As perfect as the ideas may be, it is still full of things that are not needed right now. DC people do not understand this, and we are going to have to pay. Both sides of the isle should step down if they cant get the idea of recovery in their heads
    4. Anok
Which parts do you disagree with and why?
    5. csiunatc
I know the rep's are as panicked.. They voted for the first dumbass bailout.
    6. csiunatc
Although.... Percentually, and in plain numbers.. There were more sane Republicans than Democrats on that vote...
