Beliefnet Rick Warren Interview: On Gay Marriage and Divorce
Pastor Rick Warren says divorce is a bigger threat to families than gay marriage.
    www.beliefnet.com/Video/Beliefnet-Interviews/Rick-Warren/Rick-Warren-Interv...

    Rick Warren:
I am opposed to the redefinition of a 5000 year tradition of marriage.
I am opposed to having a brother and sister be together and call that marry.
I'm opposed to an older guy marrying a child and calling that a marriage.
I'm opposed one one guys having multiple wives and calling that a marriage.

Question: Do you think those are equivalent to gays getting married?

Answer: Oh, I do. I just say that for 5000 years marriage has been defined by every single culture and marriage by every single religion. This is not a Christian issue Buddhists, Muslims, Jews historically marriage is a man and a woman and so this is why I am opposed to that. And the reason I supported prop 8 really was a free speech issue, because if it had ... first the court overrode the will of the people but second there were all kinds of threats that if you ah ... that it did not pass then you, if that did not any pastor could be considered doing hate speech if he shared his views that he didn't think that homosexuality was the most natural way for relationships and that would be hate speech. Well, to me that's ah, we should be able to have have freedom of speech to make your position and I should have freedom of speech to make my position and can't we do this in a civil way. Most people know that I have many gays friends. I've eaten dinner in gay homes. I've ... no church has probably done more for people with AIDs than Saddleback Church. Kay and I have given have given millions of dollars helping people who have got Aids from gay relationships so they can't accuse me of homophobia. I just don't believe in the re-definition of marriage.

      (1) As far as the 5000 years of "marriage" tradition between a man and woman, that statement is false. Women were chattels ie. they were the property of their male relatives until they were married and then they became the property of their husbands. Women didn't even get the right to vote until the 1890's.

      (2) An older man marrying a child is the tradition and the history of legal marriage. For pity sake we all are aware that Joseph was probably twice Mary's age.

      (3) Quoting Protho who commented;
"Further, Warren's talk of “redefining” is such a red herring, satanically so. Somebody ought to make a list of all the redefinitions that have occurred just since the middle ages. The right of the seigneur to deflower virgins on the marriage night, at other times the right of the husband to unmarry if he discovers his bride is not a virgin, the husband’s right to total control of the bride’s money and property in Victorian times and before that in English common law, the absolute right of the husband to take the children and keep her from seeing them should he divorce his wife for any reason, etc, etc. What affinity these people have for bearing false witness when it furthers their pet purposes."

      (4) The California secretary of state changed language in the ballot initiative that would ban same-sex marriage in California.

The original wording of the November ballot initiative read, "[Proposition 8] amends the California Constitution to provide that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."

Proposition 8 would overturn the state's supreme court ruling that it is unconstitutional to deny same-sex couples in California the right to marry.

The new language said that the initiative "Changes California Constitution to eliminate right of same-sex couples to marry."

Have you seen this video produced by NOM "Gathering Storm" (national organisation [for] marriage)? Remarkable, polybore raises eyebrow.

Yes I've seen that video. Below is the text that goes with it from the National Organization for Marriage website. This is all being billed as Religious Liberty being taken away. What a crock!

NOM Launches Religious Liberty Ad Campaign!
April 8, 2009 (Trenton, NJ) --April 8, 2009 -- Today the National Organization for Marriage launched a $1.5 million ad campaign to protect marriage and religious liberty throughout the nation. The centerpiece of the new ad campaign is the 60-second TV spot "A Gathering Storm," bringing viewers face to face with the growing religious liberty threat posed by same-sex marriage.

We need your help to keep this ad on the air and to spread our Religious Liberty Campaign into more markets. Help us bring this ad into every household across the country as we bring together a massive army of marriage activists all across the nation! Will you help sponsor an ad today?

Already, Boston Catholic Charities has been denied its adoption agency license because of their religious beliefs concerning marriage and the welfare of children. A New Jersey church group has been denied property tax exemption because they cannot in good conscience permit civil union ceremonies in church facilities. And individual service providers have been forced to choose between their faith and their profession. Religious liberty experts have said that these sorts of conflicts just scratch the surface of what we are likely to see if same-sex marriage becomes widespread.

Anok and Timetheif MUST get tired of having to educate over and over those who lack knowledge of history and religion.

If I could pay you both I would - but I'm permanently disabled due to a few experiences with Anti-Gay hatred.

Plus side - tax dollars from THE HATERS will support me for life.

What's your disability? My tax dollars are supporting you, too.
