Political Discussions

It seems we should have a central place to discuss issues relating to the purging, suppression and/or manipulation of votes/voters. There have been several reports of motions - both legal and illegal - to block citizens from casting their votes in the 2008 election. Reasons range from home foreclosures to overlooking small checkboxes on forms.

Below are some articles relating to possible vote purging/suppression. The first article talks about how some Colorado voters may not be able to vote because they overlooked a checkbox on a voter registration form. The second article discusses how some Michigan voters may lose their voice in the upcoming election as they struggle with the possible loss of their homes. Other articles site problems in Ohio and Indiana.

Now, some of these motions may be legitimate and legal. Obama himself legally worked the system in Chicago suburbs, so you cannot fault Republicans for doing the same if legitimate. Read the articles yourself so you can draw your own conclusions.

Republicans crossed line with voter purge attempt

The director of the Republican Party issued a blanket challenge to validly registered voters based on false criteria, trying to persuade election clerks that a mere change of mailing address is grounds for automatic cancellation of voter registration.

I heard some more on NPR today - it seems that a number of states which had the Repug voter challenges getting out of hand last time around have since toughened their laws on this. However, since voter law varies from state to state, there are still a lot of open spots for these bogus challenges - Florida being one alarming example.

Thing is, it seems like these bullsh*t challenges (and outright intimidation) are always coming from the Repug side. Somebody needs to shine a laser beam on this. I mean, we know the Repug's care only about themselves, but jeez, they must really one brick short of a load if they think they have to rule on stolen elections:-P

BTW, I'm using "Repug" here because that's what they are to me -
    Repugnants!

the allegations of "vote fraud" are essentially false.

ACORN has submitted hundreds or even thousands of fraudulent registration forms in several crucial swing states - in many states, they're required by law to submit any forms their canvassers collect.

according to experts, fraudulent registration forms almost never lead to lead to fraudulent voting. If ACORN submits a form with the name Mickey Mouse, Mickey is unlikely to show up to vote on election day.

there's a crucial distinction between "voter registration fraud" and "voter fraud" -- and there's essentially no evidence whatsoever of the latter.

This is standard political practice with ballots. Both parties hire people to validate or invalidate petitions all the time. They check registration of voters and invalidate a lot of voters because of simple mistakes. It is a nasty practice that should have strict rules.

Recently, the GOP chairman in Macomb County, Michigan, detailed a plan to use a list of foreclosed homes to challenge voters. His pronouncement drew an immediate backlash, with predictions that the plan would "backfire."

    It has.
